As a black girl is warms my heart to hear this type of conversation. Liking rock music was so alien to most of the people I was around and yet, being the only black person in a rock crowd, I also felt alien. Seeing paramore was the first rock concert where I felt not only belonging but I felt seen. I felt comfortable. I felt like I was home. It’s only the cherry on the cake that they happen to be my favourite band of all time. I’m so grateful to them for cultivating such a safe space for us all. I never had to shrink or avoid eye contact in their crowds. I could simply exist & it was so freeing. I love them so much! Amazing interview & let’s pray for a Sza collab pls ❤

I agree 110% to everything this comment states, and stands for. Never felt uncomfortable or discouraged to be myself at their shows, and thank you for asking all the right questions! some of the best friends I have in my life were friendships formed as a Paramoere STANNN!

So well said. It makes me low key mad that we have to deal w automatically feeling like we gotta shrink or avoid eye contact in rock crowds to almost avoid possible confrontation and discomfort even if it’s in our heads bc of the lack of diversity and in not knowing how ppl are yt folks r gonna react when everyone should feel free to just enjoy the music; but I love that Paramore has created a safe space for everyone to exist by the way they represent themselves as a band and are welcoming. Also perplexing how liking rock as a Blk person is treated as if it’s alien and can create a complex when Blk folks spearheaded rock music . Representation truly matters in that sense which is why I get so happy when I see ppl like Willow Smith or Lenny Kravitz doing their thing bc it’s a reminder that even tho the genre has become whitewashed in the mainstream at least that Blk folks can do it too and do it well. Prince too!

I’m only five minutes in and already crying. As a black girl who grew up with Paramore like through middle school on, to hear Hayley say that seeing a diverse crowd brought her joy means everything. Like to hear that Hayley actively welcomes black fans and wants us to partake in the celebration of their music that’s really beautiful. There have been so many artists that I’ve loved growing up only to find out that they actively are anti-black which has been so hurtful so this is just kind of healing lol.

I'm 57 years old. Lifelong rock and metal fan. It was pretty lonesome being one of the few Black kids who liked Van Halen and Journey back in the day. We've always been in the scene but it was really hard connecting before the internet, lol. Both of my nieces are Paramore fans and they both cite me as their inspiration. I've been to a lot of concerts and though there aren't a lot of Black folks in the audience, we're there and I've never had any issues save one time in the OC (but that's because it's the OC, lol). It's cool that Hayley is being appreciative and open.

She has always been invited to the bbq. Thank you for doing this, I have loved her since I was 11 and I'm 25 now, like her and Rihanna were the only reason why I dyed my hair red when I was younger. I finally got to see them live last year outside and I hadn't felt so happy, alive and nostalgic. They put on the best show it was invigorating, Hayley is the best. They are just so groovy that's why we love them. Hayley and Sza together would be a perfect alternative blend.

@@adamdevereaux2713 I certainly agree, with Coping Mechanisms I believe she perfected her sound. But in one of her interviews she had said herself she’s still learning herself as an artist and looks up to so many musicians that have helped her discover her skills even more. Things that never occurred to her come natural to her now bc of shadowing and working with other musicians.
Even Hayley Williams had said as a musician yours always learning more and perfecting your craft. There’s an ever growing supply of things to learn in music.

I love this so much! I am a black man who grew up in the hood in new york city, raised listening to r&b, hip hop, soul, but somehow gravitated to punk, pop punk/rock, and other alternative genres of music in my teen years. Paramore soon became my favorite band and is still. I connected to the music on a special/unique level. Their first three albums were the soundtrack to a lot of strife growing up. Brand New Eyes is one of the best albums I've ever heard, especially in songwriting. They will always have a special place in my heart and their music brings back so much nostalgia. So yes, black paramore fans have been here since the beginning.

Absolutely LOVED this interview!!!! I think that Hayley and Paramore do a really great and honest job of citing and appreciating the influences of Black music in their music and creating inclusive and diverse concert experiences, I think that Paramore’s work is genius and it’s also so clear that Hayley and her band actively grapple with and reflect on issues of race and culture in our society, which is never an easy path for anyone, so appreciate Hayley’s openness. So exciting that you had the opportunity to interview Hayley and loved hearing that Spotify made this connection, this is my first time hearing about this podcast, subscribing!!!

You know what's crazy? A couple days ago I remembered this day in high school where I used a Coldplay & The Fray song for a PowerPoint I had to do. My homegirl started clowning me talking bout why you are using white music in your presentation. I was like, girl music has no color, and my teacher who was a white woman, was like omg Annie what did you just say? I repeated it and she got all excited and posted it on her Twitter she told me she was giving me extra credit just because of my song selections😂 mind you she had never heard either one of the songs before. That just goes to show you not everyone listens to the same thing. Everyone is different, and that's why I love music so much. Glad other black people enjoy "white" music just as much as me.

What's sad is that early Rock n Roll was dominated by black artists (Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Fats Domino, Arthur Crudup one of Elvis idols) but the black musicians were gradually pushed out as Rock became ever more racially and culturally gentrified. The fact that Rock music, with it's roots directly tied to African American blues, is now associated with white culture is a nothing short of cultural appropriation.

Found out about Paramore from playing Misery Business on Guitar Hero back in college, and been rocking with them ever since. It was me and 1 other black girl who openly rocked with them, other than that, we were outcasts amongst our peers driving down the block singing Hallelujah lol. For her it was something new, for me I had been into more than just hip-hop and R&B my whole life so it was no biggie. All that said, I'm glad more black people are branching out into other genres.

These kinds of representations can make people more comfortable to be in certain environments and discussions and I love that 💛💛

I am loving this. I got "All We Know is Falling" as a gift freshman year of high school back in '06 and I've been hooked ever since then. In my 30s, I'm getting back to the things that I loved back then and this has my inner child cheesing!
