- We will combine 2+2log(x)-3/2*log(y) by using logarithmic properties. This is a must-know topic for your algebra class and many standardized exams. Here's the post on Reddit r/algebra / navy_practice_test

What is log_16(1/4)=?
(i.e. log base 16 of 1/4)
Learn the solution here: czcams.com/video/0hf_f2CiRXk/video.html
-1/2
-1/2
log_16(1/4) = log_16(1) - log_16(4)
= 0 - log_16(16^(1/2)) = -(1/2)log_16(16) = -1/2*1 = -1/2
The only thing you need to be careful about, is that in some industries “log” is implied to be a different base.
I was in a programming class and we used “log” that was base 2 but it wasn’t indicated. The teacher said it didn’t matter and you can use any base you like but 2 was standard for this application.
And in number theory, "log" often means the natural logarithm, written "ln" in other places.
The OP who was sitting this test ought to have been able to deduce that the logarithm was supposed to be base ten from the multiple choice answers. Such deduction might count as part of the test.
On the other hand, maybe the question setters threw in an answer that was correct for "log" being a different base... but I doubt they'd do something like that unless it was part of one of those deliberately hard tests designed to ensure failure.
OMG, you was in my recommendations by YT, i am glad CZcams recommend me valuable content. Thank you I gonna stay here :)
Glad to have you here! 😃
I solved the expression in my mind just watching the thumbnail, still watched the video as I love your explanation
no shit sherlock
Nobody asked lil bro
Same
I checked the video only bcoz of the title, i thought i might be wrong.
Thank you! Im learning log properties at school, and your channel has been really helpful
log: base 10
ln: base e
lg: base 2
I hate log without a base as the base can sometimes be e (i.e. natural log) or 2 (in compuer science), making it quite confusing. In fact, in most applications, natural log instead of log base 10 is more useful. Of course, in some cases such as the big-O notation, the base does not matter.
On most calculators log means base 10 and ln means base e.
Lots of "it's assumed to be this" in math. Bit of laziness on mathematician's part. No harm to put a 10 in the base if it helps
I’ve been taught that log is 10, ln is e, and lg is 2.
@@ProtossOPsame but in wolfram alpha log() is base e and in java log() is base e while log10() is base 10

Will he ever learn how to clip a mic to his shirt? Probably not.
I need a tutorial. 😆
@@bprpmathbasics I guess it's way easier than basic math :D
It is like this, you can't have master level felt markers with a neat lapel mic. It is too much to ask.
That's his shtick - wouldn't be a bprp video if he did that

one other way of thinking about logs (and especially so logarithmic scales/axes) is by thinking about orders of magnitude. and hundred is two orders of magnitude bigger than one; hence, the log is two.
Steve is seriously the Math King. I bestow to you, Mr. Chow. Heh.
When I studied maths, log always meant the same thing as ln. Admittedly that seems rather redundant.
Change the logarithmic expression loga (2x + 1)= 3^x into exponential expression.
A store has requested a manufacturer to produce shoes and sports jackets. For materials, the
manufacturer has 750 m2 of cotton textile and 1,000 m2 of polyester. Every pair of shoes (1 unit)
needs 1 m2 of cotton and 2 m2 of polyester. Every jacket needs 1.5 m2 of cotton and 1 m2 of
polyester. The price of the shoe is fixed at K50 and the jacket at K40. What is the number of
shoes and jackets that the manufacturer must give to the stores so that these items obtain a
maximum sale?

I've seen either calculators or computers that treat "log" as ln.
Can you please solve this

Hey where can I contact you? I wanted to send you some questions from the math olympics of my country.

If m is even you'll have to put it outside the radical
incorrect, regardless of m’s value, it can be inside or outside the radical interchangeably
m/n should be reduced to its lowest form first. if m is even ex: 2, and n is ex: 3. we write it as cube root of y squared.
@@xXMindSoulXxoops had it backwards you'll want to keep m on the inside in case you need complex roots
I wanted you to be my Math Teacher 😢
And the beauty of Math is that you can work all this out by yourself just knowing basic math and the definition of the log() function.

log is log base e. exp means e^ Wolfram alpha agrees with me, not with you.
The default base is an arbitrary convention. Of course mathematicians prefer _e_ as the base, but this is referred to as a "Navy practice test", so it's not for mathematicians.
Haven't seen someone this confident in something that they're not an expert in
Different disciplines have different conventions for what unspecified log means. In Wolfram Alpha, log means complex log, which is log base e, and the full picture that includes log base e of negatives and complex numbers. The most common convention is that unspecified log is log base ten, as that is what is of interest to scientific applications. Some disciplines use unspecified log to mean log base 2, like computer science.
@@carultch yep a lot of that in math (as well as other fields). Like we used to say in my old job "we love conventions around here - we have a bunch of them"
Wolfram was programmed by a person with falabilities. There are calculator apps programmed incorrectly...
