  • The Gainesville Tornadoes - a basketball team from a correctional facility - often play in front of empty bleachers since students aren't allowed to attend the games. But, as Steve Hartman reports, that all changed thanks to one team's selfless act.

It so sad that it takes kids to teach adults to have compassion for others. The majority of kids in correction facilities have rarely felt loved in their life so they don't even know how to respond to it. For them its all about survival.

This two young boys changed a whole teams outlook by one idea and big act of kindness. When the one played said his parents came to only one game bc they didn’t have time to come to anymore that was so sad. That group of kids are in the situation they are in mostly bc they don’t have support, love and the encouragement they need and deserve. Then they show up to their game expecting no one and instead they have a whole gym filled with students and parents cheering them on supporting them also with their own cheerleaders and posters. This is so heartwarming and shows that our youth have more insite on life than many adults.

I coached a team from a juvenile correctional facility in Wisconsin. It was incredibly fulfilling and for most of the kids the greatest time if their life. If there are schools out there that are hesitant to play a team from such a place I highly recommend it!

Something like this gives anyone hope. Whether you play sports, whether you despair of the next couple of generations. No matter what! As the young man said, we all need a little encouragement. I wonder, 7 years later, what the effect on the young men who are spending time in juvvie has been. I think if it was me it would have a profound effect on everything I did! From the court to the classroom. Even if it never happened again, in the back of my mind I think I could easily say, maybe not today but at this one time during this one game, someone cared enough to root for us. And I was a part of that. They were rooting for me. They believed in me!! What a shame that the kids own parents couldn’t make time to come to their son’s games. Not exactly encouraging for your child that when they are probably at the lowest point in their young lives and their parents can’t be bothered!!

The "school" is a juvenile prison. As noted in the piece, the other prisoners can't attend these away games. When that one kid said his parents only came once because they didn't have time, I didn't take it as the parents not caring. He is probably incarcerated hours away from his home. Texas is a huge state. The prisoners' families and friends can't travel 3-4 hours each way that often.
