Try Alba Botanica sunscreen at whole foods. It's about 20 dollars cheaper, has a higher SPF and no whitecast or ashiness. But it is definitely on the glazed donut side.

As a scientist, thank you for explaining the "long chemical name" debacle. Recently, people have been equating ingredients with scientific names (bicarbonate) as bad for humans/environment/pets/etc and considering ingredients with layperson names (baking soda) as better. Both ingredient types (and literally everything) is made of chemicals. Chemistry is the foundation of our world and the different products are showcasing the chemistry at different levels. Personally, I prefer when the scientific names are used because I can look up the ingredient name and see what its function and other uses are. For "natural" ingredients, it's a little bit more complicated because you don't know the source of the ingredient nor do you know if it was cut with anything. And natural doesn't mean better for the environment, yeah chemicals are generally made or extracted in a lab setting but your aloe or lavender could have been grown with pesticides or in poor working conditions.

Thank you. I am not a scientist but this is seriously one of my pet peeves. Ages ago I worked in a salon and the owner loved to tell customers that the products were all "chemical free" and frequently got frustrated that I would not say that. When she finally pressed me I simply said, "WE. Are. Chemicals." It was not appreciated.

Nikki M I don'f know of the long term effects of the ingredients. However, I do know that if you don't wear sunblock you put yourself at a much higher risk of skin cancer. UV rays cause DNA damage. Essentially they form they cause double bonds across pyrimidine nucleotides (C/T dimers) which increases the chance of mutations (because double bonds are stronger and harder to rip apart during the replication/translation process).
Tldr; I wear sunscreen everyday but I also live in socal.

Unapologeticall Nori Yeah I really felt that when she said that esp bc my black ass got sunburnt in Summer '06 visiting Myrtle Beach and I've been traumatized ever since.
It is alarming the lack of public awareness made about the effects of UVA and UVB Rays on those with higher levels of melanin. Not only does it exasperate hyperpigmentation but black people are more likely to go longer without having skin cancer diagnosed and have higher rates of death due to melanomas, with a survival rate of 65% compared to white people with 95% (if I can remember correctly). A rare cancer called acral melanomas has higher rates among darker skin people, which often occurs on the soles of feet and hands. Remember, skin cancer doesn’t always show up where you have sun damage. Pale people, like myself, are more likely to get skin cancer (including benign ones) but because we are often made more aware of this reality we are likely to have it diagnosed in its early stages. I mean, you are likely to know one white person who got a basal skin cancer removed or will in the future. But it isn’t as common knowledge amongst darker skinned people which is honestly dangerous.
Sun damage is not only good to avoid to prevent premature aging but to save yourself from harmful cancers. So, use, at least, a nickel sized amount for the face each day and two shot glasses (or 2 tablespoons) of sunscreen for the whole body!
Also, know that titanium dioxide will always give you a white cast because it is also used as the pigment for paints.

__ WeekendVegan __ Lol I use neutrogena hydroboost spf 30 it’s $8-10 for 3 oz but isn’t brightening, not a moisturizer, and the smell can be strong. I need some of that bolden but I’ll wait for a sale or something

I was in the dominican republic over the summer and forgot to put sunscreen on my shoulders when i went swimming. It hurt to wear a bra the rest of the week and i peeled like an onion. Terrible. The Caribbean sun did not come to play with us!
Oooof the sun is SO much stronger near the equator. Was in Jamaica in April and my lily-white ass had to be sooo careful. One other white girl we were with didn't wear sunscreen one day and her lips swelled up from getting burned lolol

I also just recently started spf-ing. I noticed the sun sports when I turned 25. Also, pimples decided to appear on my face in my mid20s. I only get like 2 a year. But they like to leave dark spots as dark as my moles. Stefanie Nicole convinced me that sunscreen is the key for good skin. Thank goodness Korean makeup is popular in Asia coz they congested the market with sunscreens. I have a lot of options now.

Thanks for this PSA on the need for black folk to use sunscreen! Melanin is beautiful and a blessing but it provides less than 10 SPF in terms of protection from the sun. This is so important, since skin cancer can affect us, too!

I'm gonna have to check this product out. I currently use a moisturizer that has SPF 30 in it. I have a dermatologist that gave me medicine for hyperpigmentation scars but the UV rays makes them worse.
