Thanks Teddy, the vice cost £20 and the rods were free. On the welding forum I frequent, I am told they are a good rod for this purpose. I am pretty sure the body will be cast steel or cast and forged and I didn't experience any problems with contaminated metal. My welding is a bit rubbish and certainly some of the first passes weren't that good! Towards the end I was getting some very good penetration and I am confident in the strength of the finished product. Does make you wonder how the jaw broke off in the first place though...
I’ve repaired several post vises with jaws broken of and I’ve used several methods but easiest was use 7018 and pre heat first to 400 and slow cool with it in sand or welding blankets
How wide are the jaws ? And did u find the weight stamp in the moving jaw ? And I’ve gotten best results using nasty cast as buttering pass and since these vises tend to have all types of oil and stuff soaked in and low hydrogen /7018 rods don’t do well with that . By the nasty cast has no problem as well is mean for cast iron and does great with these wrought iron vises . Also it doesn’t look like you got good penetration like the welds look cold and the bead profile and size fluctuations
