I had the TC 800D model, which used ferrochrome tape, excellent machine.

thanks Rene , love your work i have my tc-800D which i purchased new back in the day it has been out of service since the advent of digital recordings and a main belt decomposition event. Always a much enjoyed bit of art . I hope to get it working again for the grand kids to enjoy along with the rest of the analog stereo system . So that is the "love" part of the beast and now comes the "hate" part by the look of your video .

@@cassettedeck-walkman-repair yes sailing is another passion , 6 years sailing would have lots of love / hate moments as well !!!

They are now quite rare I assume ? , I have only seen 20 or so of these when I worked for Yamaha and with the passing of time I can only imagine how many are still around
The sound quality is typical mid 70ies and the FeCr button (type III tapes) was the best there was at the time , but it will play and record type II’s just fine and records up to 16kHz

I've got one of those... always thought it was funny it can operate from batteries.

Thanks so much for this video, thx to you I was able to replace the huge melted belt what a mess :) now the issues remaining are the right channel that seems dead and the function buttons working intermittently ( play rewind etc..) Any idea where I should start? Many thanks again!

After wiggling the rec and play buttons, now the right channel spikes for a few moment then dies if it can help diagnose 🙏🏼

You need to clean the rec play switch with contact cleaner , i will post the time stamp to the video soon

@@juliemc920 if you go to 15:12 you see 2 long metal switches on the board i folded up , those 2 are the rec/play switches, one for left and one for right , you need to clean those switches with deoxit or other contact cleaner , that will help with right channel
the play rewind problem is most likely the idler wheel and the rubbers around the take up and supply reels , you can clearly see them around 0:55

@@cassettedeck-walkman-repair ok! I cleaned the rec play switches again, they're were so filthy I cleaned them with more love this time :) I also made another pass at the function switches. Both my channel now works! Now the remaining culprit is that my right channel seems to have only the max playback output. It does nothing when I play with the playback switch. Left channel ok. I just noticed that they're seems to have copper traces under there, under the actual switch on board ! It is so dirty I did not notice them the first time, I only saw the copper sliders under the upper deck.. will try to clean with qtips. Still trying to figure out the working mechanic of these switches , wish me luck and let me know if I need to check something else about that topped right channel. Thx again so much for your help!!!

I am also waiting for the correct size belt as the bigger I had seems a bit too short so the speed sometimes fluctuate a bit
