  • After sitting for 3 years it was finally time to fire it up for a long trip. The distributor was replaced, revealing 50 year old electrical quick fixes that barely held on.
We also upgraded the alternator making it possible to run the lights and charge the battery at the same time.

The reason for so much green is that Europe gets heated up by the Gulf-Stream. Still, they do have quite snowy winter. That is so cool. Model A's have a sound just as distinctive as a Harley Davidson. I love it. I'm going to have to buy myself one I put it off way too long. The guy across the street has a nice one in his garage. In 10 years I've never seen him take it out. Maybe I can talk him into letting go of it.

You are so lucky, what I wouldn’t give to have a car like that! Although I’m only 49, there’s just something about that generation vehicles that I absolutely love, I don’t know why I love them so much, but every time I see one, I just want to get in it and drive away! The only tricky part is learning how to drive it!, I’ve only driven one once, it was a friend of my grandfather, and I was only 16, I had just learned how to drive a stick shift, and thought to myself that if I could learn a stick shift, those old cars should be cinch, boy was I ever wrong! I can still remember my grandfather and his friend laughing their asses off as I desperately tried to get the car to move, they thought it would be funny to see if I can figure it out by myself with no help, I was not amused! LOL! After they watched me try until I was almost in tears, grandpa finally came up to the car and showed me how to drive it, and damn was it ever confusing, none of the petals are where they’re supposed to be, at least in comparison to a modern car, who would ever think of putting the gas pedal on the steering column? But once I got the hang of it, man, they practically had to pull me out of the car! The minute I finally got the car to move, I was in love, I did not want to get out of that car, and I loved all the attention it got! I couldn’t go anywhere without everybody stopping to take pictures and ask me a million questions, none of which I could answer because I was just driving it, I actually had to get my grandfather’s friend to write down a bunch of information about it, so I could answer peoples questions. I don’t know why they decided to let me drive it for that day, but I’m sure glad they did, I literally drove all day long, and once I got used to it, it was actually quite easy to drive, and surprisingly comfortable, especially considering the lack of suspension. They had very little power, but the great thing about them was they would never get stuck, they were the very first all terrain vehicle, you could go anywhere in them (when they were first mass produced, there are very few paved roads, most the time you were driving on dirt roads covered in mud), and never have to worry about getting stuck, that, and they’re so simplistic that anybody could fix them. Sadly, the gentleman who owned the car passed away shortly thereafter, and it was sold at auction as he had no family to leave it too, and as much as I wanted to buy it, when I was 16 there was just no way I could afford it, but now that I’m 49 I wonder how hard it would be to find one? I live in Toronto Ontario Canada, does anybody know where I could look for a vehicle this age close to Toronto? I’m willing to pay handsomely for one, provided it’s in good shape, I live in a condominium so I haven’t got a garage to work on it, so I would need to buy one that’s already been completely overhauled, and return to its original condition. I did see one for sale in the newspaper, about 10 years ago, but back then I was fighting colon cancer, and was flat broke, and they were asking $39,000, which still remains out of my price range, but if I could find one for, say about $25,000 or less, I’ll jump on the chance! Happy motoring all!

Hop on facebook or online car listings, you can find plenty of nice Model A's for 25K or less, and if you wanted, with some searching, you could probably find a Model A Pickup for 25K. The gas pedal is weird, for sure, but although its on the column, there is the gas button in the floor too. Never drove one yet, cant wait to though.

Bullship ... I drive a 1928 GMC (American LaFrance) fire truck on a pretty regular basis and we only trailer it if going more than say 45 minutes away to a parade. With careful use on the road it's almost more likely to get damaged loading / unloading on the trailer than anything else. Also, doing the trailer bit can add an extra hour in travel time, that could otherwise be enjoyed driving! Second vehicle is a 64 Corvair van that I drive on 100 mile trips at least once or twice a year. Since I drive it locally on a regular basis I never have any unexpected mechanical issue during a trip. OTOH, I do carry some odds & ends just in case. (belt, points, oil) Certain things just aren't available everywhere. Also have AAA platinum, which is good for 200 miles of towing. (gold is good for 100 miles)

Model A's are nice cars. Sitting in the back is very odd and it is like sitting in a big box. There are no seat belts, arm rests, and many of the cars still have plate-glass windows, not safety glass. The seat is literally like sitting on a bench with padding. I imagine driving one you would have to be continually looking out for other drivers. If you get hit, you are toast.
