- None of our generation's character actors were quite as brilliant as Philip Seymour Hoffman. From his breakthrough in Jan de Bont's Twister as the comic relief Dusty to his work with Paul Thomas Anderson and beyond, he was the rare character actor that was so damn good he became a leading man. Tragically, he passed away in 2014, and it's hard to believe it's been eight years since this industry titan left us. As we get close to the anniversary of his death, we look back at some of his greatest roles in this episode of We Remember.
Let us know in the comments what you think of this tribute and what your favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman performance is!

#PhilipSeymourHoffman #BoogieNights #WeRemember - Zábava
RIP, Philip Seymour Hoffman. The world of acting will be never be the same without you.
Well said Shane! Think he was really struggling with money until scent of a woman. I did take him for granted & when he went, I was in shock because his talent is unreachable to others.
Man it was phenomenal how he can be so fucking hilarious in Along came polly and so fucking scary in Mission impossible 3, and so sad in Truman capote. He was able to do every character
Love your eloquent style!
Amen
His performance in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" will always be my favorite.
mine too! One of my favourites films, that. The cast was insane: Jude Law, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow and Hoffman all young and doing some career best work imo
His Inside the Actor's Studio is one of the best you'll ever see. You learn so much about acting just by listening to him.
I’ll check that out & thank you.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. I was shocked and saddened when I heard of his death. As a recovering heroin addict myself, it frightens me to think of dying alone like that. His death actually helped motivate me to get clean. This is a beautiful tribute to a very talented man. Thank you!
I'm also a recovering heroin addict, I was clean when he died, and as my favorite actor it fucking broke my heart. He was the first person I truly mourned for that I never met. I am clean now too, but I struggled for a good 4 years after he died with heroin. I'm grateful that I don't have to worry about dying with a needle in my arm anymore. He deserved better than that. But as we know addiction doesn't discriminate
I felt broken when I heard his death. Damn, do I miss him.
My heart broke when he passed away, I will always be his biggest fan.
Rest in peace, Philip Seymour Hoffman. The first movie I ever saw him in was "Scent of a Woman", and despite being a mere supporting character, he blew me away. He went on to more leading roles, and deservedly won the Oscar for his work as Truman Copote.
He was a fantastic actor. 💯💯💯💯💯👍💯💯
He didn't owe him fear, he owed him awe
He was the greatest of all time in my opinion. Doubt is such a trip, it has 0 curse words, never says the word "rape" or "abuse", but is one of the most tense, morally ambiguous films I've ever seen. It's never even stated exactly what Streep's character thinks he did, but it is so heavily implied that you know EXACTLY what is going on and what everyone means. It is truly such a unique film, especially because a lot of the films I watch are really vulgar and violent. I also realized that I look almost identical to Phillip in Twister, I'm about the same age too (I'm 29). RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He was the first celebrity I ever mourned over.
Damn, he was handsome. That dimple between his eyebrows. I loved him.
I don't think we were ever meant to have Philip longer than we did. I can understand how, towards the end of his life, he said acting was emotionally exhausting. He put everything he had into every role and I think it took its toll. I don't know how you could keep that level of intensity for decades. Thank you for this beautiful tribute -- it couldn't be more perfect! I'm sure I'll watch it many more times when I want to remember this brilliant human being.
One of the best actors of all time. He is surely missed. We have his son now to take the torch and can’t wait to see how farther he goes in his career. His dad would be proud.
R.I.P Philip Seymour Hoffman. He is such an amazing unforgettable actor, one of the greatest of all time.
Such an amazing actor. So blessed that I got to see him in Long Days Journey into Night on Broadway. Completely floored.
I can't think of another actor that was even on his level, having complete lack of peers must get lonely.
Outstandingly talented actor... 💔
Thank you JoBlo for commemorating him
Honestly what a shame. He was such a prolific actor and appeared in a ton of movies. May Philip rest in peace. 😢
"The brightest lights burn only half as long", and Philip Seymour Hoffman, you did burn so very brightly. Thank you.
His performances in Capote and The Master were astounding.
His performance as the baddy in Mission Impossible was top notch as well.
I believe anything he touched in cinema made it special.
A sorely missed talent.
I'm so happy that we have the same first Phillip Seymour Hoffman experience :)
Just like you, I first remember him as Dusty from Twister. But one part he played that sticks with me is him as the villain in Mission Impossible. His kine delivery made my blood run cold. Absolutely terrifying!!
I got to talk with Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s sister , Emily . I told her how much her brothers work means to me. she told me it brought tears to her eyes and to “keep making our world lighter” what a beautiful moment
I can’t believe he’s been gone for 9 years 😔the loss
Loved his speech in Patch Addams to Robin Williams about genius and those that aren't, RIP
Great timing. I just watched Licorice Pizza yesterday and it was excellent. I was blown away when I saw the lead was played by PSH's son. Massive talent in that family. Miss you, Phil.
The master is a beautiful film, I've watched it about 5 times and it doesnt ever get easier but it does keep getting better.
He was great in everything. Stood out no matter if his role was small or big. I'm happy to see his son acting now too.
It's not my favorite role of his or my favorite film he's in but I absolutely love 'The Talented Mr Ripley'.
His charakter in "Magnolia" brought me to tears.
Beautiful tribute, sir. Very moving. Such a tragic loss. I miss his nuanced force. Thanks. RIP PSH
Gone too soon, but still iconic in the range of performances that he gave us...
Still hands down my favorite actor. He had such a powerful presence even when he played low key characters. After Jack Goes Boating I was excited to see where he would go as a director.
PS: If you haven't seen Love Liza check it out. It's an overlooked gem in his filmography.
Loved him in that! So relatable and such a chill aura...great directing
My favorite movie he is in by far is The Big Lebowski. Such an amazing actor, and wish the US would provide more addiction rehabilitation
At the time the Capote film came out, there was ANOTHER biopic of Capote starring an actor who both looked and sounded a lot more like Capote. In fact. Hoffman neither looked nor sounded like him. But what can I say - he wiped the floor with that other actor, and NO ONE remembers that movie now! This was a metamorphosis and got into the soul of the tortured writer so deeply that you DID begin to see and hear him as Capote. This was one of the spookiest things I've ever seen. But what breaks my heart is how none of this acclaim seems to bring people happiness. Having some of the best roles that existed in Hollywood, winning every award and even having a family who loved him - he still had a broken heart at such a profound level that addiction broke him in the end. But that is exactly why he could play those complex, wounded characters to such perfection.
He was a really great actor, the shame was his addiction to drugs. His great performances will be always remembered. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
His range was impossible! Unquestionably one of the greatest of his generation! Sad tho his passing was, we are all lucky enough to have what we do on film forever!
An amazing actor.
Gone but never forgotten.
He is one of the greatest actors of all time.
1:27 thank you for that story I’m crying already 🙏🏼😢😭😭
Dude, Dusty was the man! Hahah, had the same reaction when I first saw Twister in my early teens.
He is truly missed... (and truly needed).
BEST Villain Ever!
Some one has to play the best supporting actor, and he was undoubtably one of the best at it.
A job well done. A fitting tribute to a wonderful talent. Love see more tribute videos like this in the future.
who you think should come first?
the great RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman
One of the greatest. One of my favorites. One of the few with whom I felt a connection. I put him with Robin Williams, Gary Oldman and Jared Harris.
One of the greatest actors very emotional video thanks JoBlo
He was a magnificent actor. It was such a waste when he died. A true star was lost
I first saw him in the Steve Martin film Leap of Faith, he stood out in his small role and I knew he was gonna be someone to watch, later that year came Scent of a Woman and that just sealed it.
that was a beautiful hommage
One of my favorite movies of his is Flawless with De Niro. Underrated film.
One of my all time favorites, may he rest in peace. I knew from the range of Twister and Big Lebowski that he was talented and going somewhere and then he took over Hollywood in the 2000s. Owning mahoney is such a good hidden gem, really good look into the dark side of gambling addiction in excruciating detail. Pirate Radio is another just absolute blast of a movie thats always approved by the wife as well.
An underrated Steve Martin Dramedy “Leap of Faith” with Liam Neeson and a young Philip Seymour Hoffman in a minor but brilliantly portrayed side role.. still one of my top 5films along with “Money Ball” As a recovering addict RIP legend
Miss this man so much
Shout out to State and Main from 2000 - an underrated GEM! Written and directed by the genius David Mamet!! Absolute gold.
what a beautiful tribute! well done
such a legendary actor!
Amazing actor gone too soon.
R.I.P
Man, this guy was so brilliant in Twister
46 he passed away so young 😢
One fo my favourite actors off time, top 5 at least for me. A lot of actors have ranch but not alot of actors are good at doing everything, Philip Seymour Hoffman really was
Thank you for this, and thank you for mentioning Owning Mahoney. I tell everyone I know about that film. Scent of a Woman was the first time I saw him on screen and it blew me away.
My favorite Phillip Seymour Hoffman is definitely "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead."
I rarely get strong negative emotional reactions to celebrities deaths. I understand it's sad. But I don't know these people so I typically don't get personally affected. When he died I actually cried. Paul thomas Anderson is my favorite director and Hoffman my favorite actor of his generation. I related to him so much. I related to the feeling you must suffer for your art. I related to his depression and to addictions. Idk I miss him. At least he is in the endless black nothing that is death.
Still missing him my fav
One of my favorite actors of all time, his range was amazing, he should've won best supporting actor for The Master and I haven't watched any of The Hunger Games movies, but I would just for him.
Hoffmans performance in Synecdoche New York is beyond perfection. Miss him so much!
The Son of my favorite actor in a movie of my favorite director. Is it a dream? ❤️
Joe, you should write an ode to Philip Seymour Hoffman thanking him for your inspiration. But, this tribute is a start.
Excellent overview of this great yet troubled actor. As a plus, your voice is very clear and your pronunciation perfect -- not always the case with reviewers. Thank you so much!
I remember that episode of Law & Order! Honestly, PSH was probably one of the most versatile actors of his generation. Capote is still my favorite, but he brought an 'everyman' sense to everything he did. Magnolia, Almost Famous, 25th Hour...he was always a flawed genius adding raw emotion into everything he was in.
2014? well then, I've been under a rock this whole time.
Great tribute! One brilliant actor. I, like you, saw him my very first time in Twister. He was a standout! He was one of those actors, who, the moment he enters the screen, or stage, your eyes automatically follows him
Amazing tribute to an amazing man. Thanks for that. You nailed it.
Rest in peace. I still miss not seeing him regularly on the screen. My favorite actor
Touching tribute. Well done.
Hey I recommended you guys doing one on Hoffman. He was my favorite actor. He was one of the best. Thank you so much for doing this. Cheers!!
Awesome actor
Great Tribute to a wonderful actor he may be gone but he will never be forgotten his work his performances will Last forever RIP 💙🙏
Great video
The Greatest
I remember he was considered for the role of the Penguin on the Christopher Nolan Batman films, such a shame that didn´t materialize.
Liked when he was in mission impossible. He's the best part of that movie, movie sucked, but his performance is why I watch it again.
Thank you for doing this!! IMHO PSH was right up there with Brando. I remember vividly, when I read of his addiction problem, thinking to myself I hope he doesn't OD. He's my favorite modern day actor. So sad we lost him. RIP brother Phil. You are seriously missed
That was a beautiful tribute! Thank you!
Flawless is incredible... I'm more man than you ever will be and more women than you'll ever get.
As mentioned here, he played the only true villain in Mission Impossible. He was an impressive actor. RIP
Rest in peace legend.
Thank you for this.
Extremely talented, multi-faceted character...but his role in "Twister" was revved up and over the top....he was high all through it. Painful to watch. But fast forward to "Talented Mr. Ripley" (awesome role...) "Boogie Nights" (real Pathos) and his hilarious but overlooked small role in "Big Lebowski" and the great Tom Hanks Afghanistan film about the "Charlie Wilsons War"it showed what he was truly capable of. His turn as the baddie in one of the "Mission Impossible " films was incredibly believable...and fueled by his open contempt and dislike for Tom Cruise. RIP my man.
One of my favourite films of all time is MI: 3 and PSH is partly responsible. Owen Davian is so cold and otherworldly he was actually really scary as he seemed so utterly invincible, even when clashing with Ethan Hunt and his team, so good was Mr Hoffman's performance.
RIP big guy
Nicely done, sir.
Don't Let Drugs Do This To You....RIP.
Thanks for this - fitting tribute for a total actor / artist. Clearly one of his generation’s very best 👍
Goddamn.. beautiful, dude
I first saw him in the remake of The Getaway. It was a small but important role in the first act and he made a big impression on me.
Loved PSH. Always out acted every one else on screen. Sad to not have his craft anymore.
Great video!! One of the best, (sry for bad english)
Capote. Best biopic ever.
My favorite PSH moment was in TBL when they were reading the ransom letter and he just was trying to play all sad, then flips back into Brandt mode to hand Dude the letter.....
so subtle, so damn funny...
RIP Hoffman :(
