- So how exactly does the 2019/2020 BMW M135i compare to the outgoing M140i?

The new BMW 135i came as quite the shock to fans of the older generation M135i and M140i - BMW had implemented more than a few changes, enough to turn the heads of Golf R & A45 owners.
BMW have swapped out that 3 litre straight 6 engine in favour of a 2 litre, 4 cylinder motor AND they have implemented the X Drive all-wheel-drive system instead of the usual RWD format.
But what is it like to drive? How do the cars differ? Is it actually any good?
Find out in today's video when I take the BMW 135i for a quick spin, taking you on a tour of the cars interior & exterior whilst giving my thoughts on how the car performs.

Got my M140i last week, zero regrets!
How are you finding it?
Give it a couple years, it’ll be a dinosaur, even more than it already is 👀
@@TheMkBroadcast 135i dinosauring faster than the old car
Your best video yet. Keep it up!
Thank you 👍
Good review that, what might have made it better was probably a few quick shots of the boot size and space, and maybe some shots of you in the back to show some practicalities. Other than that you’re heading in the right direction with these types of videos 😉
Thank you sir, yes I agree, it was a little oversight for me, I'll be sure to include it moving forward. Thanks for the compliment 👍
Great review! Waiting for delivery of mine. Haven’t owned the previous generation before so won’t be experiencing the loss of 2 cylinders like most people do coming from the F21 model. Should be good to drive and especially with having the xdrive here in Scotland
Thank you sir. Yeah you'll love it no doubt!
Subscribed .. good reviewer for sure
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Borrowed one from my local dealer, it's a fantastic car, power down in the wet is excellent and very refined too when driving normally. Good review, looking forward to mine arriving!
Thanks for the comment 💪 glad you enjoyed it.
When does your arrive? How have you specified it?
@@JustTheDriven storm bay individual metallic, m sport plus pack, tech pack and heated steering wheel plus electric lumbar support (under £40k for uk road tax £145)
Sounds great. I do love the current colour choices for the cars. Sounds like you've got a great spec!
Very professional review. Had mine for 2 weeks (ex m235i owner) and tbh the only thing I really miss is the noise.
Thank you 🙌 - how did you find the 235i overall? & What made you get rid of it so quickly?
@@JustTheDriven The f2x are really good cars but with flaws which perhaps give them character and makes them fun. In particular the poor rear damping and 300+ hp with an open diff makes for some interesting moments.
I was planning on going back to a hatchback anyway and will admit to being a bit sceptical about the new model but a 3 hour long test drive won me over!
Interesting, I did/do quite fancy buying a F2x model, purely for the engine. I'd make sure to get one with an LSD though.
When do you take delivery?
@@JustTheDriven They are all about the engine, n55 or b58 you can't go wrong. Bilstein do a spring & damper kit which I understand dramatically improves things without a lsd and I seriously considered going down that road.
The lsd should be standard but hey thats why the m2 exists!
Car was ordered early Sept and delivered last week in October. I have a good relationship with the local dealer and lets just say they let me 'run in' one of their demos slightly ahead of the official launch date!
Good point, I think if them bits were standard people would shy away from the M2. Plan to have one on the channel sometime soon.. maybe alongside a M2C if I play my cards right.
Sounds like you had some fun in the new car before it was even launched then! Enjoying it so far??
Picked up mine 3 days ago in the storm bay colour and I have to say its a brilliant drive, I prefer it over the old rear wheel version as I used to lay bricks in my pants when the back end went out 😂 only thing that bugs me is the fake sound pumped through the speakers but you can reduce the sound in the settings menu. Also the 2020 models only pop and crackle when you start the car up and it won't pop when your actually driving which is a shame but a map should sort that.
In 20 years time when they update the classic BMW book; the 140i will get an ENTIRE chapter devoted to it; the 135i (of this generation) will get a footnote. Wait and see.......
It will be interesting, the new model splits the room in half in most circumstances
This won’t sell numbers like the previous generations.
The 3.0 turbo rear wheel drive was its selling point. Now it’s just the same as everything else in the market. In which case Audi s3 wins it for me
I feel it will grow on people the longer it's out, it's a huge initial change but I feel people will warm to it. I do agree that the B58 was a huge selling point.
Out of curiosity, why does the S3 win it for you?
Previous m135i then m140i didn't sell that much there are good chances the regular F40s sell properly
The golf r and s3 massively outsold the m140/m135. They will sell a lot more of these, more accessible to more people.
Do you think cheap leasing deals attributed to this? Not so much with the S3 but definitely with the R, made the car hugely accessible after 2/3 years
You are wrong
This will sell double the previous model
I adore this car😍😍😍
Glad you like it Nasir!
Why does the camera make the interior footage all jello wobbly, made me feel like motion sickness
"So thanks too BMW dealer for letting me drive your car, I've left a very positive review and not mentioned the pig ugly front"
I drove one a few weeks ago and I'll agree interior is a big step up but that engine and gearbox compare to the old m140i are worlds apart. The car I tested was 42k that's way too close to m2 comp and for me hard to imagine stepping from the m140i down to the more expensive new m135i, rather trade in m140i and go m2
I don't think the front looks too bad 🤷🏼♂️, I think if you're currently driving a 140i the change is daunting and I'd agree, if I was in that situation I'd opt for the M2. I think people moving from an A35/45, Golf R, Cupra etc will see this car in s better light
Id go for the m2 aswell the 'new' 135i is definetly a step down. A generic car now
Update.....deal on my m140i was too good and the extra running cost of M2 comp can't be justified, so took another test drive and after specific packs added and a few extras decided to order a m135i.
Are these cars quicker than a Cupra 290
An interesting release- The interior and exterior is not too bad, but I think the A35 shades it on Both accounts. Quite a few 140i / 135i 6cy purists condemn the car, citing the new design as ugly, and the engine as a step back ( regs ) .
Be interesting to see the tunability of the car as you say.
That said, good effort on the review, look forward to seeing the soon to be released 2019 2020 hot/ hyper hatch reviews. ( A35, A45S, Mk8r, S3, Mazda 3 TCR etc)
It's an interesting one, when I saw the announcement I think I frowned for about 3 days given the changes. The looks have certainly grown on me but still time yet.
Thanks for the comment 💪
@@JustTheDriven yeah I've edited the comment, was a bit hasty / unprofessional 😁
Are you based in Crewe? Saw the name of the Crewe BMW dealer on window. And inside!
I'm based in Leeds myself, the car was in Crewe 😁
@@JustTheDriven Were you tempted to drive it home and pretend you didn't have it? 😉
Seats look very nice. But it’s a new novelty Golf R Clone. Choice is good to have tho, I guess. Goes & sounds well from what I see. Good review again mate. Top Gear next for you in a bit. 👍
They're very comfortable too, yes it adds another option into the market away from the S3 and R, but I feel even then the price is a little too high to be too comparable. Thanks for the compliment Neil, means a lot 👍
They gave you a faulty one. Steering wheel is on the wrong side 🤷♂️. Like the review. Smaller Turbo engine & FWD is just they way it goes now.
Like a bat out of Greggs springs to mind
The humour is strong with this one...
I'm sure Reg Greetham will let us all know shortly......
BMW are trying their hardest to push these things 😂 handing them out to every car youtuber and his dog. Had a go myself and honestly didnt get on with it
This wasn't given to me by BMW UK as some have been, this was through a contact of mine at my request 😁
Can not wait to burn past someone in one of these in my M140i.
How's your experience of the 140i?
Still struggle with the looks.
The exterior is pretty hateful in my opinion. The rear is Ok(ish) but the side profile is grim (like the bastard offspring of an X2 and a 2 series active tourer) and then there’s the snout with those grilles. Sounds bobbins too, and the Asin ‘box isn’t a patch on the ZF8.
The interior is really good though other than the awful digital dials with their silly shaped dials.
Looks like a focus
A little bit, there's only so much manufacturers can do though!
When the BMW boss sobers up from Oktoberfest I hope he recalls and crushes all of them. Then forces the buyers to drive FWD Hyundai i30n's as punishment!
That's a strong opinion 😏
JJB I polited it up & recrafted the comment three times. The first involved a thousand fire ants and an arsch.
Id be interested to hear that first comment 😂🤔
You mean the slow i30n? Which is slower than the last generation Golf 7Gti? You do know this car competes with a GTR, A35 AMG?
Very nice review but all I can think of is Peter Kay.
Haha thank you, I'll take that as a compliment 😂
447 senang
Sendiri pergi
Cross between audi at rear, Ford focus side and front end is a mess
Thanks for the comment. Do you prefer the previous generation then?
m135 is fuckin amazing
F20/F21 yes!
The B58 drivetrain made the 140i very special. There is nothing at all special about the new 135i. 13 a dozen.
I do agree with the platform for the 140i. I really need to drive one again whilst it's fresh in my mind.
I think i will stick to my M140i. It is a unique car where as the m135i is another Golf R clone with an engine that sounds like a hairdryer.
This looks better than the Previous generation, it looked horrific and chavy
Just call it the new Golf 8 not a bmw
Thanks for the comment Mike, do you think it looks like a MK8? I personally don't
Fair bit of hate here calling the 135 ugly.....jesus wept the 140 the ugliest thing I've ever seen!
