- We have our sights set for the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route, a trail that will span 5 days and 592 miles. Our goal is to drive from the Oregon border to the Canadian border all primarily by forest roads. Follow along in this two part video series as we tackle this challenge and complete another milestone in our books!

Outstanding buddy. Awesome. On the 4th to 7th I rode thru north Idaho, southern BC and Alberta then down into Montana for the Going to the Sun Highway (Logan Pass). Put Logan Pass on your bucket list. Views galore. I am looking forward to your Part 2. Keep'em coming.

Thanks for your fast reply. It is greatly appreciated. I guess my second part or correctly asked question is would the truck and camper make it on the main trail. And then use the 4Runner to take side trips.
Ohhh, yes and no. Some sections of the trail get tight, very tight and even clearance issues may become a concern depending on tree fall. However most of the overall trail is open and no problem. The main difficult is finding areas to bypass and having to backtrack due to the main truck, camper, and trailer. Honestly I would gear the 4Runner up and make the haul on that alone. Will save you the frustration down the road 👍 You can always come back with the bigger rig after completing certain sections and have an expectation of the area.

Great videos, love your channel. Could I do this with a f350 dually with a cab over truck camper and towing my 4Runner on a trailer for shorts trips
Thank you! You could certainly take that setup to most places, though when the trails begin to narrow and tighten the 4Runner would be a great secondary vehicle to have.
Great Job! I've been looking for a good current PNW channel. I appreciate your editing and narration. The inclusion of maps is also a nice touch. Finally, the drone footage is fantastic. I look forward to watching your channel develop.
As an FYI some decent PNW ones have been Josh Duncan Overland who improved nicely as he went along - but gave up Overlanding for Sailing. Pacific Crest Expeditions also did a nice job but has since fizzled out. Coyote Works is pretty good but has it's own focus and Outlaw Xpeditions which just grew tiresome to me.

Excellent video as are all your Conquest Overland videos. Can this route be done in a Winnebago Revel? I’ve picked up lots of travel ideas from your work and this one is on my to do list this summer.
Thank you so much for the support! Overall this route is doable by nearly any AWD vehicle with decent A/T tires. Most of this trail is simply rough gravel roads, deep potholes, or rutted sections from rain and mud that don't get a lot of sun. The only main trouble you may run into is how tight certain sections may be such as Bethal Ridge. From a height, width, and wheel base perspective that would be the only potential issues when driving through the wooded sections but otherwise I'd think you would be just fine!
This was epic! Were there any sections that were hard to get a Tacoma through width wise? Trees pin striping and rubbing on the side of the truck?
There were definitely spots scattered through the entire trail that I would consider tight. We left with a fair bit of pin striping but to be honest it just comes with the territory and you have to know that going into it.
Instead of pin stripes, I prefer to call them “trail trophies” haha. But just go slow, use a spotter, and you’ll be fine. Nothing went deeper than the clear coat.

I plan to start with sections 1 and 2 for me and kids and camp out. I have a 2021 sequoia. Will it be light trails and open for us?
Not for nothing but that structure at the 3:56 mark is likely a Sokqueatl or “wild man” structure. About as dangerous as grizz or brown bear areas.
We are going to attempt this trail this weekend after the adventure van expo in Oregon. Any advice for a VW Atlas guy? Lol!

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I am planning this trip summer of 2022. How far apart were gas stations? Any issues or concerns with fueling up? I plan to bring a gas can or two, but I drive a thirsty vehicle. Thanks!
Thank you for the support! I honestly brought a 5 gallon jerry for gas and didn't touch it once. The gas stations are available at almost every intersection with pavement so you shouldn't have any issues. However, with that said we primarily only stuck to the main trail. If you plan to venture even further and explore side roads definitely plan to bring a can. Regardless you'll have a great time as there are endless beautiful sights!

I would recommend to have a high clearance 4 wheel drive truck/ SUV and you’ll be more than fine. It’s a great trail that offers stunning views of WA. Have fun out there!
Beautiful video!!! Sure is on my bucket list. But i was wondering, what happens if someone drives the opposite direction on those tight roads...? Is there enough space to pull over and let them pass.?
Typically those with the larger convoys have the right of way as there are more vehicles to worry about getting through. We've run into situations where a small pull off was only just up the way and whoever is closer will opt to pull over.
Then there are situations where there are simply no immediate pull offs and one must go in reverse until they are able to safely move aside. Again it all depends on multiple variables, uphill/ downhill, convoy size, immediate pull offs, etc. Just have to be safe and aware when running into "trail traffic jams."

David Purnell it says 575 on the website for the BDR, but we clocked it at over 590 (extra time for finding camp maybe? 😉) There are plenty of side trails and view points along the way though! Doing this trail in the gladiator would be a blast, have fun!! 👊🏼

@@ConquestOverland i recently moved to the spokane area and have been almost all over WA. its crazy how it goes from mountains to farm hills of wheat to the desert and canyons back to mountains. Ive never loved somewhere where the landscape was so vast and diverse

No real bad spots, just deep potholes and a few tight sections that pin stripping will happen. You'll be just fine!

Conquest Overland I did sections 1-4.5 the same time as you! I must have been a day ahead of you or so, had to abandon my vehicle due to a broken strut for a day and do a field repair on Bethel Ridge. Good times! Anyway, loved the video, thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much! This is a slightly older video and at the time I was using just my iPhone for not only recording but also navigation AND flying the drone 😆.

Could I navigate a RAM 1500 through the trees with minimal damage?
Oh for sure! Just a couple tight areas navigating between trees on some sections, but go slow and you’ll be fine.

Conquest Overland nice. Just got mine a few months ago, upgraded from the spark. What mode do you use the most?
Ruben Navarrete oh very nice! I honestly use manual mode the most. I prefer to have complete control of the gimbal and camera angle, specially when flying around or near objects. The pre built in modes are fun but when out on the trail I prefer to simply launch and go! 👊🏼

Would you say that this trip would require any kind of lift kit?
Not really, I would say just a solid set of quality tires (ATs or MTs) and a way to air up and down for better ride comfort and you’ll be just fine 😉👍

What maps did you use?
We used the Butler BDR Maps, you can get them directly off their website or Amazon. I would say having this map in conjunction with Gaia GPS would set you up very well for this trail, cheers!
Have you ever driven section 1 in June?
I have not. If you use Gaia GPS and input the snow layer, you can get a general sense of what to expect on the trails. I've come across snow well into July in certain sections... Just have to play it safe but also be prepared with the right recovery gear if you do go out!

Thank you very much! Finding camp is actually relatively easy on this trail. Most of the BDR ventures through public land in National Forests of which is fair game for camping. Most "spots" will be recognizable with either a wide pull off or a cleared out section where a vehicle can park along with room for tents.
In essence you'll want to look out for these spots rather than driving over vegetation and creating your own. Public land is great for exploring but we all have to do our part to keep it clean and sustainable for those following behind.
We personally use Gaia Maps with the public land layer and MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) layer turned on to help for these situations.

Ooh cool! Is that a paid feature on that map app?
Tactical Survival you will know that camping will be allowed based on the land you are currently traveling in from the information via maps and Gaia GPS. From there you’ll see the “open” areas in which you can camp. Basically find areas in which you can safely park a vehicle that is out of the way for others and not harming the natural landscape by driving off trail. You know it when you see, promise!
And yes, Gaia has a lot more benefits with the paid subscription. You can get a lot with the free as well. Explore their website for more info, it’s a wonderful resource to have!
