- It's been about eight months since we planted this elephant garlic, so let's dig it up and see what we have!
Here are my TOP TIPS for growing & harvesting garlic:
1. Plant it in the fall
2. Harvest in the summer
3. Turn off water 4-6 weeks before harvesting
4. Let it keep drying after harvesting
Elephant garlic is one of my favorite varieties for a few reasons:
-It's HUGE
-It has a mild flavor
-It's super tasty
We planted this back on Halloween, and it's for us to harvest. Garlic (like many root crops) can be a little tricky to know what's going on and when to turn off the water (garlic & onions) and when to harvest.
The most common mistake I see with garlic is that gardeners continue to water the plants after June or so (depending on when you planted). The bulb should be drying out, but moisture will cause it to rot out, and you'll notice that if your stalks are brown and fall over.
Garlic is one of the easiest crops to grow, and it's something that just about everyone uses in the kitchen. The flavor of homegrown garlic is incredible, and you're going to love having it fresh in your home. - Jak na to + styl
“Look at that fatty”. Best comment ever
Elephant garlic is actually part of the shallot family so it has a milder flavour. ☺
What is shallout ?
@@beasmartfarmer like a small red onion with a sweeter onion garlic flavour.
Great.
I think it is good in commercial purposes at mass scale level
Shallots, garlic, leeks, onions, are ALL part of the same family - alliums - so your statement doesn't make sense and is incorrect. I get what you're trying to say, though. They're more closely related to leeks than regular garlic
Also with elephant garlic u need to let it go to flower before u harvest 😀 some people don't know that it's different from soft neck garlic
Looking forward to trying garlic again this year!
That was Awesome...
I actually find that body shaming garlic is just plain wrong 😭😭😭
Lol we love the thicc garlic
Wow that one is big
Liked and subbed! We always grow garlic... But I've never successfully grown Elephant garlic... Thanks for the tips.
İ planted garlic the first time and it's not big at all but i learned so much i planted softneck garlic
Thanks for the good tips!
That's amazing!
Awesome 👍
Thanks for the growing tips, much appreciated! ✌🏼❤️
Thanks Good Lady., Your Amazing! Don't forget.
Gorgeous garlic. Is is that elephant garlic? Good job, mam.
Wow huge! I want to try this for some elephant garlic!
Since they're fresh, we won't have them ready until September, but you can either pre-order to sign up to get an email for garlic now! sandiegoseedcompany.com/product-category/vegetables/garlic/
Wow!
Love this too
Thanks
Beautiful 😘❤ 💜 👌🙏👍👏👏👏
Thx
🙏🏻
How can we dry it without rottening
Thank you. Can you send me one with what you are saying. I’m 83 & wouldn like to try it.
thanks good tips
❤️❤️
New to your channel..can you show us how to do that garlic braid ?
Welcome! Yes, I'll make a note to do that when it's harvest time :)
She’s wearing Sandals with overalls, while using a shovel
This is San Diego, my friend!
What brand are your overalls?
I think I would like.to be a part of your life. I'm not much on garlic but I am quite talented and driven to coexist. I like your style.
❤️
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany Lol.. I fully expected your reply to be... "I'll check with my husband ❤️" 🤣😂
What brand are your overalls?
I grew elephant garlic for the 1st time this year. I got solid round bulbs, no cloves. What did I do wrong?
Same here
@@denesestanley7011 I put mine back in the ground this past fall to see what would happen . So far they came back up and are growing well from what I can see. I’m hoping they split into cloves this year. They should from what I’ve read.
@@tobenrn thanks, I will leave them.
I love you
Lol…. Grow ALL “winter”……..yahhhh………
So, sandier soil for garlic?
Garlic grows best in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil with pH between 6.0 and 7.0. You don't want it super compact (for any root crop), but it's not terribly picky either.
Shoes....
Why on Earth would you dry it? It is SO much easier to peel when it's not dry (you literally just squeeze it), and the flavor is better! Sounds like you might need to try it...
What are those red plants and plants with yellow flowers?! They’re so pretty
Red plants in the background are amaranth, and I'll double check on the yellow flowers next to me
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany awesome thank you!
I tried some but I think my husband over watered it cuz they were holes around it and there was nothing It was it just was mush
Ah yeah you have to be careful with that, especially towards the end of the growing cycle
Turn off the water? I live in Mississippi how do I turn off the sky...Between June and September when you can set your watch by when it cries?
Great question. Do not irrigate any longer. Can’t do nothing about the rain!
I did plant garlic… very small.
When did you plant it ? Full sun?
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany I planted in the fall. Yes full sun.
Turn off the water how the hell
Am I supposed to do that
For your drip irrigation. If you live in a rainy area, you can cover them to cure
I really like your video and I have a field of garden as well. I lovingly want to give you a tip back please don't use the lord's name in vain. Please remember he's the one that gave us all these beautiful plans
Religion is a scam
@@melaniedennis9540 I never said I was religious, however I have a personal relationship with our Lord and if I'm offended I will share it !
I tried to do a lovingly and I'm truly sorry you don't understand the hurt that you caused my Holy Spirit because you've insulted my Lord. Please remember he loves you and you are more than capable of making a beautiful video and conducting yourself appropriately. I hope your heart hears this.
And if you are not capable please feel free to block your content from my eyes it's just that simple
Beautifully said Kelli! 👏 You were kind and thoughtful! I have wanted to say something like this so many times, but neither found the courage nor the right words. Thank you so much! 💓 A
I didn't think she cursed the Lord. I thought it was more a praise.
@@johnhill1747 I agree with you. She said" oh my God that is amazing" what could anybody find offensive in that ?
Do you still plant in the fall and go over winter if you're in zone 4? I cant imagine it would work out with our ground not even thawing until end of April, and winter getting down in the -20s
I am in zone 6a it snows here we had a very late to no spring and my garlic from last year is doing great 👍
So are my green onions
You may have to add TONS of compost and straw to protect the plants. Not sure though you are way colder than us!
Hello, where can I source the garlic from so I can grow it?
Right here! We have one variety in stock right now, and several more will be restocked in September.
sandiegoseedcompany.com/product-category/vegetables/garlic/
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany fabulous! I’ll order some. Thank you:)
What are those giant red numbers behind you?!
That's amaranth! Have you grown it before?
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany nope, I have seen it before but never knew what it was.
Where can I buy some elephant garlic bulbs for planting? Tks
Right here: sandiegoseedcompany.com/product-category/vegetables/garlic/
Walmart go in to the fruit and veggie area buy 2 nice sized heads. Pop the pieces apart do not peel the skins and plant out side. Yes you can start garlic and onion sets both the year before you want to harvest. I also plant a bunch of lettuces and this year I planted my first pumpkin. I planted broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Asian Eggplant (have not had a single one flower and set yet this year but last year we got 3) pear shape tomatoes come up all from seed and lots of fruit. 2 heirloom tomatoes each had just a couple tomatoes from them yet. Beets coming along nicely as is my Swiss Chard. Lots of herbs as well and let a few onions go to seed on purpose.
@@loristrout4741 Wow, You go girl! Would you please consider doing a video so we could enjoy what you are doing?
I know this sounds crazy but are there garlic seeds?
Not crazy at all! You're usually going to plant small little propagations or even a whole clove and let that develop.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany every year we pull up our garlic, the small seeds detach from the garlic skin and grow year after year (same place for over 30 years) I'm curious about the seed looking things in the flower ball. Do they grow? I'm guessing not as we would probably have an acre of garlic after all these years .
@@JavaRatusso they can, but most gardeners don't use them and they often aren't viable. You'll see chive seeds more often
Turn off the water??
Yup! If you have a drip system, turn off that area so the plants don't rot
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany TY for this info. I wasn't sure what that meant. My gardening is all old school and litteraly just planting seeds in the ground. Will keep in mind when watering though.
Tried elephant ear garlic once. Didn't like it at all. Thought it had a bitter taste...almost medicinal.
Ah bummer. It might have been a funky one, or maybe there are just other varieties that you'll like more!
Do you rinse it before drying?
You can brush off the dirt, but it doesn't come into contact with the parts you eat either way
You use Chinese seed
No, we work with local farmers and produce our own
