now tell us about Dan Campbell quotes... here is one " we don't need a franchise quarterback to win " lmao
GMs wouldnt say that about Allen, or Mahomes, or Burrow, etc. I took this as a statement saying (indirectly) 'we would like to improve at the position but there is no guarantee a switch will help'.
@@snow3017 you might want to work on interpreting statements, cause you lack in understanding it (directly).
Goff said that he is willing to be paid less to ensure that he has talent around him to continue to be successful. He mentioned in a press conference that he has more than enough money to be comfortable and would rather the Lions use that excess to get him more help. Whatever the amount is, it will be the right number.
so... what is taking so long to get a deal done? Goff is asking for more than the Lions want to pay him

Hence why Brad Holmes wasn't interested in entertaining other trade offers. Thus pissing off many other GMs who thought they could have offered more for Matthew Stafford.

The "off schedule plays" obsession is a dumb way of judging QBs. Off schedule plays are excited, but the best QB's to ever play, Brady and Manning, didn't make off schedule plays. They were great under pressure and Goff was top 5-10 under pressure last year and was great at commanding the offense.
how about not blowing a 17 point lead in the nfc chip
You're right. I mean, "off schedule plays" means the line broke down. Hopefully, we will stay out of that situation.
It's more like insurance that even if the play breaks down, the QB can save it. Your margin for error is way smaller with a QB who can't do that.
The NFL is a copycat league. The best QB is Mahomes and his off schedule play has been a key to his success. Now, everyone wants one.
@@aarondonald1611 I disagree. It's insurance if done well, but qbs who do that often try to do too much themselves instead of trusting reads. RW was great off script in Seattle, then stunk in Den in an offense that requires timing. Even Mahomes struggled this season when offenses took away the off script plays and made him play conservatively with timing.
I get the “making things happen off schedule” critique. I also think Jared Goff is a huge part of why things are typically on schedule and humming along. So because of him the surprise or off schedule plays happen much less.
Strong take. Sometimes you have to make the off schedule play because you missed the second read.
@@thomasblock1164 or you didn’t correctly recognize pre snap where pressure was coming from, etc. People call him a game manager, I don’t think that should be a slight, it’s great that his experience and composure allow him to regularly position the offense for success.
Brad Holmes wanted Jared Goff and he knew what type of QB he was getting. Analyst need admit they got it wrong with Jared Goff.
Jared Goff isn't like Dak and Tua. Jared Goff took the Rams to the Superbowl and lost to the GOAT Tom Brady and Bill Belichick's defense. This year he took the Lions to a deep playoff run and it was poor decisions from Dan Campbell that stopped them in their tracks.
I think Jared throws a beautiful ball. But I looked at stats which matter. He’s 4-4 in the playoffs - respectable - with a 65-percent completion percentage and about a 5-2 TD-2-INT ratio. You’d like to see high 60s and 3 but close enough for government work. Now he’s no Mahomes but who is? If I were a coach I’d take Goff over a lot of “more celebrated” quarterbacks. But assuming 50 mil is a lot I think Jared should be paid at least 40, maybe 45 if you’re generous. He’s better than advertised. He’s played in one Super Bowl and really should’ve been in a second but that loss to the 49ers is all on Campbell. Plus Jared handled that better than most would’ve. I would’ve blown a fuse.
4-4 is kinda beyond respectable. There's not many QB's not named Mahomes, brady or Jimmy G that can say better. (That's a non exhaustive list, of course). 4 wins ties him at 42nd all time
Really, he should be in the Kirk Cousins range. A top ten but not top five qb, in this system he works, and even if they pay him they should be able to keep the players together. So 40-50 million a year. But longer term guarentees than kirk got since he's younger and doesn't have the injury concern.

@@cap2205 yes it can impact the cap but if a player doesn’t hit a certain marker they won’t be paid . It’s simple . There’s a reason the cardinals put certain language in Murray contract before they changed it . What’s gurranteed as far as the salary pay check goes against cap anything else is a cash pay out . That’s why the convert some money to a bonus. Burrow got 219 in gurrantees over the course of about 4 years . 45 million against the cap isn’t bad especially when the money goes up for cap every year . Mahomes is gonna get 60 million paid to him in 25 and almost 70 in 26 which he deserves . If cousins got a bag , Goff should get at least what he got he’s been more productive in my opinion
I like how Goff had to prove he could do it without McVay and he did and now he has to prove it without Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson was a complete unknown. He's never called a single offensive play in the NFL without Goff as his QB. No matter how successful Goff is, it will always be because of someone else. These are also the same people who criticized the Lions for making Stafford the highest paid QB in the league even though he never won a playoff game.

Goff was written off very early in his career in LA and there were a lot of naysayers preaching doom and gloom because Fischer didn't start him right away. The Stafford/Goff trade worked out well for both teams, but Goff continues to be under-appreciated.
QB salaries are insane, but he deserves to be in the top 10, though if he's smart he'll be willing to take a team friendly deal, ala Brady and Mahomes, so that the Lions can build a better team around him.
I feel Jared Goff is a special player. Jared has the support from all his team mates , I feel. So , a little love needs to be going in Goffs direction. Goff, is superior under pressure. This guy has little fear. But, it doesn't show by looking at him . Goff is very under valued. I hope Goff gets what he deserves. God bless Goff!!
My guess is that Goff sees that he took the team to the NFC championship, the defense was mostly to blame for the Lions loss, and therefore he wants to be paid Tier 1 money. But as a Lions fan I can tell you, Goff is not the dynamic, elite QB that a true Tier 1 QB is. He sticks to the playbook, he stays in the pocket like a statue. That's good in a sense because he doesn't get rattled in high pressure games. But thank Brad Holmes that Goff has such an elite O-Line or else he'd get pretty badly exposed for his faults. Goff is at $33M avg/yr, he probably deserves right around $45M and I wouldn't give him more than 4 years max. If he's asking for like $50+ he's nuts.
The NFL has gone crazy. No QB is worth $55m, compared to total payroll.
2nd in yards, 2nd in completions, 4th in TDs, on a franchise that hadn't won a playoff game since 1991. I don't see why a teams that's been largely irrelevant for decades would be cheap and risk it when you could be building something.
Goff is a fkn baller and a genuine good dude. I highly doubt he has any intention of doing the Lion's wrong. He's fantastic in a clean pocket and has been dicing consistently for the last 30 games. He's a better leader than most and is selfless. Mike is so ass backwards about these situations
He can get u to where u want. Love his game.
McVay disagrees
Goff needs to be payed
Hutch is up for a big extension, also. Goff's extension can't eat into that.
How mentally tough is goff to go from the rams to the lions when he did...from the city of LA to Detroit..i would have been destroyed. He hung in there became a team leader and loved by not only his teammates but his community as the lions have become truly relevant for the first time ever or at least since fontes coached.
To me the guy is on the same plane as kirk cousins with a better playoff and primetime record. He deserves to be paid similarly to kirk IMO
Theyll get it done, im sure the lions haven't forgot what decades of irrelevance felt like....yet
SKOL!
My man should get paid Kirk Cousins kind of money, I think that's a fair comp.
Falcons are not a role model
@@debbiesroommate Not necessarily saying that are, I'm saying that's the contract that I think pays Goff his market value.
I think the issue with Goff is the amount of guaranteed money. If the Lions up that amount, they could probably get by with less than $50 million annually. If they offered 45 or more, Goff should jump on it. He will be hard-pressed to find a better situation than Detroit. Top 2 offensive line, top 2 tight end, top 5 #1 receiver with good supporting cast, top running back duo. Ford Field is indoors. If he wins here, the fans will adore him and he will have a huge payday in retirement with local endorsements and TV gigs. I simply don't see him moving on to an unknown situation unless the Lions insult him with a lowball offer. That won't happen because we have Brad Holmes, not Russ Thomas.
As a lions fan 45-50 is where we want to be if he wins a Super Bowl this year give him 55
He just got 53
45/yr but 40 is a bargain and would be nice
Over 50 😉
I've never heard two people say so little with so many words.
As a lions fan i totally agree with this for the first time someone holding Goff accountable he played well but its times the throws he made was horrible but the fans will ignore that fact!
Homes has always shown priority to his own guys, and that includes Goff. Holmes was the lead on drafting Goff, and getting Goff was his first move as Detroit’s GM. They’ve probably already settled on a number (my guess is 46/yr), and this is a years negotiation. Holmes has never given a FA contract over 3 years, and the 4 year extensions Sewell and St Brown just got went to players who are much younger on rookie deals. All of the recent major QB extensions (Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Jackson) were all 5 year though, and that’s probably where Goff’s agent is sitting. All of those extensions were to guys on rookie deals though. So, I’m guessing they’ll end up settling on 4 years.
Miami and Detroit. Two teams with QBs that can't run away from pressure. Great statistics, but hard to move forward in the playoffs. BTW both have outstanding supporting weapons.
At least there is a genuine discussion of a pay tier now. During Dak's extension, all I heard was 'that's the marketttt!!!'.
Top tier are superbowl contending QBs who elevate their teammates (not many), next tier should be around the $25-35m (starters who can win playoff games). Below that, I don't see why QBs should be paid any more than top draft picks ($10m max).
Goff should be in that mid-range $25-35m because, without serious weapons and watertight protection, I can't see him run deep in playoffs.
What are you talking about, right on the chest of a receiver is not where it is supposed to be? Its fine Detroit vs Everybody. Goff played with perfect stats throughout the playoffs.
It wasn’t in the chest stop it
@@user-bk6uu5hu6othe first one was right in the chest are you blind?
Unfortunately, if the gap is too big, we could loss JG. Fortunately, if that happens, we can use Hooker and have plenty of money to sign every other player. I've actually been thinking, could JG go with Ben if Ben leaves. All this being said, I hope we get a deal done! Jar-red Goff, Jar-red Goff. Jar-red Goff. He leads our Goffense, let's get this done. LET'S GO!
I figure $45-$50 mill, he climbed up the hill to success with his team again. Hopefully he sustains this time. That is the worry that I had with him coming to Detroit and our immediate future. But for now he should be getting some good, not the best, money.
Personally, I think that if Goff and the Lions are still to far apart by the time OTAs come around, the Lions will likely wait until after the preseason games to fully evaluate Hendon Hooker during actual game play to add some leverage to their side of the negotiations, that is if the coaches feel Hooker is ready as far as knowing the playbook
Saying he was a cast-off in the trade discounts the fact that Holmes was a former Ram and fully aware of Goff's abilities.
Jared Goff and Geno Smith are similar QB’s. I believe Geno is getting something like 28 million a year. If they signed Goff for 4 years and 32-34 Million a year, I think that would be fair to both parties.
Your smoking something crazy if you think Geno is on the same level as Goff 😂
Maybe in the market 5 years ago but not now. There is no way that Goff for what he has done with the Detroit Lions since being there is he worth less than 40 at the bare minimum.
Same? Look at goffs stats and resume? NOW say that again??
Geno no where near goff level what you talking about
Watch them play. Don’t look at stats. Watch them play. They could swap teams and have similar success. They both have decent arm strength. Both generally throw the ball on time and accurately. Both struggle a little when their timing is thrown off by pass rush or when receivers just aren’t open. Both are good enough to get their teams to the playoffs and neither is good enough to carry their team to the playoffs. If you want to argue that Goff is slightly better… ok. But they are similar. Like Dak and Cousins are similar. And if any team pays Geno or Goff over $40M then they won’t be able to put as much talent as those guys need around them to win a Super Bowl.
Mike is a fool. Goff is a top QB just accept it

Could this delay be the result of creating a structure that allows us to pursue critical free agents?
Most likely not. Brad Holmes hasn’t ever shown a desire to go after high-cost FA’s. He’s made it clear that keeping his own guys is the priority, and that includes Goff since Holmes was responsible for drafting him, and bringing Goff to Detroit was his first move as Detroit’s GM. Maybe Brady does have a stronger arm but his success was largely the result of his very quick release and his accuracy both are aspects of throwing shorter throws accurately, throwing that quickly relies on receiving the ball on a short route.
New England's system and personel were a perfect fit and allowed Brady to read and manage the game so very well.
As to winning in Tampa, there was that "defence of a generation" on the other side of the ball.
@@brianmacadam4793bradys arm was definitely elite, just because he didn't have the strongest arm ever didn't mean he didn't have a fucking cannon attached to his shoulder.

"just because he didn't have the strongest arm ever didn't mean he didn't have a fucking cannon attached"
Your own words make the argument.
Brady didn't throw the long ball like others in the league, whether that was by the design of the OC or by Brady's choice.
Brady just didn't go for the long ball like others.
Bradshaw had Stallworth and Swan to throw to and he would go downfield whenever he could.
BTW I wouldn't put Bradshaw ahead of Brady in my list. Just that Bradshaw threw long much more often.
Tua said his Dad would beat him if he had a bad game, and people I know who went to school with Goff said he was a total "daddies boy" so they may both share a deference to authority.
Outside of mahomes, Brady, and Matt Ryan, (each 1 year) QBs in the Superbowl havent had a cap hit accounting for over 20% of the cap.
Teams that pay their QBs, outside of those 3 examples, dont make it to the SB.
The cap 255 mil, responsible pay is 37mil a year for a QB, if you pay more than that you arent earnestly going for a ring. Any more and you need a Special QB to overcome the lack of talent a team allotting over a 6th of their cap space to a single player.
100% agree.
@@jacobsims8307also for reference the year Payton manning won a SB with the Broncos he was making about 11.6% of the total cap (18/155m)
The rough equivalent of 29.6m today.
Goff is already paid a higher % of the cap than Payton manning with the Broncos.
Uhm, as far as I can tell, Brady never had a cap hit that high. Mahomes hasn't yet but is scheduled to in two years, Matt Ryan neither.
@@deathhimself1653 maybe it was only 3 paid over 15% not 20%, I don't quite remember.
For Brady I think the highest % of cap was the last SB he won as a pat. Actually on 12.4% in 2018.
Mahomes it was 35m over a cap of 208m in 2022. (16.8%)
And Matt Ryan for 2016 season accounted for 23.75m while the cap was 155m.
(15.3%)
I love Jared but I also want to see how he performs this year. This is the big year. I'm looking forward to at least seeing Hooker get some reps pre-season. I honestly think having a pocket qb that has trouble when he is pressured can only get you so far. We'll see. Time to show and prove Goff.
Accurate assessment. His ceiling is limited. He’s extremely accurate as long as he throws in rhythm. If he has to move it falls apart quickly…
Kyler Murray? It always intrigues me that people complain about Daniel Jones salary and never about how much Kyler Murray makes. Jones had an awful offensive line but managed to run and throw his team into the playoffs and, unlike Murray, actually win a game. A game in which he played great. Last time Murray was in the playoffs he played one of the worst games ever. He is lucky to finish a season and when does finish a season he is decidedly different in the 2nd half. He is such a media darling they refer him simply as "Kyler". Jared Goff is a better player. Pay him and us Murray as a gauge.
46-48 for 5 years, 3 1/2 guaranteed. Puts you at 18-19% of cap for 2024.
They need to get Goff another receiver. If St. Brown gets hurt they are screwed and then people would idiotically blame that on Goff somehow.
Yes I am here
Goff going to Dallas with Ben Johnson
Believe it or not, it's not all about money with these guys...
Josh Allen is at best QB4 in the league. Burrow and Lamar are definitely ahead of him. And since Daboll left the Bills, Allen has not been as effective. Could he get more money? Probably. Can he carry that cap hit and be successful? Well he hasn't carried what he has to success yet.
About 45-50
