Restoring Cast Iron with a Campfire

- Restoring cast iron cookware that is rusty or covered in thick build up can be so intimidating! There are chemical methods, lots of scrubbing, and it can stink up the whole house! When I saw this method of stripping cast iron outside in a simple campfire, I was intrigued, to say the least. After trying this method out on my grandma's vintage Cast Iron pan, I am thrilled with how well it worked! I did learn after the fact that there is some danger of heat damaging your pans with this method (same goes for the oven on self-clean method) but it worked really well for me with this pan and I will be using it in the future for sure!
Every time I use this heirloom Cast Iron griddle in a video, someone asks where they can find one... so here is one you can get for yourself if you love the looks of my grandmas pan half as much as I do! @lodgecastiron Griddle - amzn.to/49EQpFY

campfire method for stripping cast iron
This is the same concept as putting the pan in your oven on a self-clean cycle (same risk factor of overheating the pan in the oven as well)! But instead of stinking up the whole house, you can do it outside! Even with the slight risk, I will use this method again. Just keep the coals low and it should work great!
Great Grandma used lard salt and steel wool. Then cured it in the oven for 1 1/2 hrs at 350 🤔😖 after she heated it in the oven she would fry a bit of bacon then use the bacon fat to finish curing her pans while she had a BLT 🤣❤
Great grandma sounds like she knew what she was doing! I will try with lard next time, I always have plenty on hand so that would be a good option!
Salt to Clean the cooked on bits and Lard to re season the pan, Yup grandma knew what she was doing 100%.
My grandmother would take all her cast out to the garden in the Fall and put them in the fire as she burned up all the dead plants from her huge garden, She also picked all the green tomatoes after the frost hit and wrapped them in news paper, placed them in a cardboard box down in the cellar where she could later enjoy ripe tomatoes in December and January.
It works. Thanks for the tips. I have an old Dutch oven I'm going to do.
I restored one a couple of years ago, I used a drill and a wire brush attachment to clean it up, no risk of cracking then in a fire that's too hot, it's also much quicker to do. Flax seed oil is meant to be the best to season with but I just use vegetable oil which works fine.
After the scrubbing, I would have soaked it in vinegar over night to dissolve the iron oxide. Then you can rinse the residue off!
Great tip, thanks!
Thanks!
Very nice! I didn't know you could do it with coconut oil, I've been doing mine with flax, but on the grill because very hot flax oil smells awful.
I’ve done a 10” deep skillet in a fire like that. If you have self cleaning oven, that will strip it also. Probably safer than a camp fire.
I read it's the same risk factor but who knows! What I do know is I'm not willing to stink up my whole house doing it indoors 😅 I was really happy with this method but will keep in mind to make sure the coals are low!
@@apinchofpatienceYour absolutely right, a very well used cast skillet or pan would smoke you out of house and home.
Some of that old caked carbonized oil may even catch fire in the oven , You did it right the 1st time in a camp fire 100%
Another way to do the clean is to place it in a cold oven and then run the oven through a cleaning cycle. After that do the oiling process. I've found that grape seed oil works best for me. I've known folks that have had items crack in a very hot fire. The oven process removes that risk.
Thanks for sharing!
Wow, I'm speechless really. My set could definitely use a touch up. Thanks
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I am really happy with the results and will be doing my big Dutch oven with this method soon!
I’m so surprised you used soap! I cleaned an old cast iron pan with soap and my sister was so upset - she said never use soap! Well, I cleaned and seasoned the pan and it came out very nicely. Thank-you for your video.
Some people are so triggered by the soap 😂 it is one of those things that does have the potential to be harmful to your pan, and it has just been drilled into cast iron users. NEVER EVER SOAP! But once in a while, it's fine. Especially when stripping, you are not worried about damaging the seasoning, you are intentionally removing it! I remember my great grandpa almost had a heart attack when I washed one of his pans with soap when I was a little kid! Poor guy. The pan lived tho 😉
Your Mostly right Except When your refurbishing a Cast Iron Pan then Soap is ok, But after it's been "re seasoned" no soap ever, no way, don't do it..
Thanks again, great video.
Terrific!
Thank you for SHARING your touch of magic! 👍✌️🇬🇧
Thank you Phil!

Love it!
So awesome! Thank you for sharing!😊❤
I was really pleased with the results! I'm glad you enjoyed 😀
Well Done!! Thank you.
Thank you! I'm so happy with how it turned out! ☺️

Hi!
What temp.in the oven?
Yup works great. You can do the entire process on the fire. I take mine out hunting every year and they are out in the elements for up to 60 days. They only thing I’d say is don’t use soap on cast iron. The cast iron soaks soap up and can leave a soap taste in your food for many months depending on how often you use it. I recommend boiling water in the pan and recoat with your choice of oils or fats after every use. I need to refinish my big cast iron crock pot. The tomato sauces from chili is rough on cast iron lol.
Hey kid. Been a minute since I saw you. How yur family's doing good and y'all are walking with Jesus. Luvvin yur cast iron restoration. 👍🤠
Hi! We are well, enjoying the last bit of winter and looking forward to some warmer weather! Thank you 😊 how are you?
@@apinchofpatience I well also sis. 🤠👍
@A Pinch Of Patience: This is great! Do your references provide any estimate regarding the temp we’re to heat our pans in the fire? I don’t have a fire pit, but Im thinking I could put mine in my grill and heat it to the temp suggested and, the, follow with the rest of the steps. Im good about maintaining my pans, but one of them came to me with a less than smooth surface that I’d like to address.
I didn't see a specific temp listed there, but lodge cast iron says up to 650f , I think your grill sounds like a great plan!
@@apinchofpatience Wow! Thank you for speedy reply. I’ll give it a try. There’s little chance using the grill will damage it, in any case. 😉
Is this pan also a lid for dutch oven?
Not that I know of. My grandma didn't have a ducth oven that went with it, just the griddle.
The ingredients are not clear at all...😢
For the cast iron? I'd love to help if you have any specific questions!
