Secret Benefits of Perks in FO3 & FNV

- Many perks in Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas do more than the in-game description says they do. Jeff finds and demos them with a little help from the GECK.
Apparently tags don't actually do anything these days, so here's a list of themes, features, characters, locations, and items to let the algorithm know what's in this video.
Fallout (video game series), Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, walkthrough, demo, bug, glitch, perks, GECK, Animal Friend, Cannibal, Contract Killer, Entomologist, Fast Metabolism, Gun Nut, Impartial Mediation, Lawbringer, Life Giver, Master Trader, Robotics Expert, Scoundrel, Toughness - Hry
Now I want Rank 2 of Animal Friend to behave like the Mysterious Stranger. But instead of a man with a gun, it spawns an ornery brahmin that knocks over the target during VATS
Make the brahmin explode at rank 3
Or make it so it’s happens more often than the MS but it’s random so you can get anything from a rad roach a Brahmin or a dog
now imagine that rank 2 of animal friend let's you purchase an animal whistle that summons a random animal horde "balanced to not be op" once a day to help you out of any situation
That'd be some funny shit dude especially the level 3 where they'd explode shits gas dude
Or a bear
This is something that was missing from FO4.
Speech checks for random perks just gives so much life to the game.
Fa haba had a few
@@Skullhawk13 ye, and it's one of the reasons far harbor is one of the best parts of FO4.
@@benvictim you say that like I don’t agree heh. It’s honestly quite the glow up of what could have been.
>sarcastic no(actually yes)
they brought it back in 76
you know you play NV too much when you know there are no Yao guai in the base game and only had too look down at the date to start to smell fish
Should have modded in the flaming ghost yaoi gui!...lol
It's likely that the yao guais are in the base game but do not have a programmed spawn, since New Vegas is practically made of 90% recycled content from Fallout 3
@@doomslayer1841 They are not, you cannot find a single scripted spawn in the base game for Yao Guai, they don't magically add them in even if you have the DLC. You could do that fight a million times, and you will NEVER find a Yao Guai in there because it is physically impossible for it to spawn there or anywhere in the base game. They're exclusively a Honest Hearts enemy and you won't ever find them anywhere else, the only actual reference you can find to them before Honest Hearts is in the Legate's war tent with a singular piece of Yao Guai meat.
@@Ashen_Night116 damn, i didn't know that, i started the game using the viva new vegas guide and i suppose one of the mods there adds them on the base game, they are usually close of jacobstown
@@Ashen_Night116I do love the mod though that ads a few yao guai to Mt Charleston
New Vegas' Math Wrath perk opens up unique dialogue with Christine in Dead Money and with Dr. O in Old World Blues.
Whoops, I only checked the base games, not the DLC.
@@BelthansMods opportunity for a sequel video :D
Interestingly, the dialogue option with Dr. 0 also appears if you have an Intelligence of at least 9.
@@guul66id be interested in a point lookout segment
Dialogue... Christine... 🤔🤔🤔
Lawbringer has an additional unlisted benefit: taking the perk causes a unique Raider, Junders Plunkett, to spawn inside the house in Arlington Cemetery. His unique finger can be turned in for 1,000 caps, and he has a unique variant of Spiked Knuckles, called Plunkett’s Valid Points.
Doh! Good catch, can't believe I forgot that one.
@@BelthansMods It’s okay, I didn’t know about the benefits that you pointed out in the video, so that’s that then.
Does the evil version of this perk add unique NPC's?
@@danielsurvivor1372Sadly no, not as a bounty anyway. Obviously there’s the NPCs that are added for when you turn in ears but nothing like Junders Plunkett.
Good to know for future playthroughs
The cannibal one with Jack, his commentary of someone saying "oh I have a kid in Rivet City" is actually linked to a kid in RC who says that his dad abandoned him, not actually ever knowing his dad was killed and eaten in Andale.
is that the hargrave kid? with the alcholic mother?
@@bigbananadealer846yeah, the one u can get to steal ammo for u. his kom mentions his dad ran off and disapeared
You get a secret dialogue option in the Mothership Zeta dlc if you have the mysterious stranger perk.
Yeah, I've gotten that one once! I need to play that DLC again- Last time I did it, I was doing a bare knuckles only playthrough of Fo3
“If we’re lucky a friend of mine might show up.” *Slaver girl looks at you like you’re crazy*
Here's another few unnamed bonuses I've discovered over the years, these aren't dialogue related:
The Fortune Finder perk can affect the amount of Sierra Madre Chips you find in Dead Money when the perk mentions only bottle caps.
For some bizarre reason, the Scrounger perk increases the amount of Pork n' Beans you can get from three containers in Lonesome Road, even though it says it only affects ammunition.
They do extra damage as ammo in the rock-it launcher.
@@AceOfBlackjack Which isn't an item in New Vegas.
@@oneblacksun But is also why it pops up more as a ammo.
@@AceOfBlackjack Not sure where you got that information from, the Rock-It Launcher can not load Pork n' Beans.
The Rock-It Launcher's ammo list is "RockItLauncherAmmo", it contains 112 total items in the base game, all of which are misc items. Point Lookout later adds the brain jar to the ammo list, and Mothership Zeta later adds the alien crystals and Buttercup toy. This list is included in New Vegas as legacy content, but is entirely unmodified.
Even if it could load it, it would not deal any additional damage as the game settings controlling damage bonuses are zeroed out, those settings being "fRockitDamageBonusWeightMult", and "fRockitDamageBonusWeightMin" in particular.
The Scrounger bonus to Pork n' Beans in Lonesome Road is specifically a new leveled list called "NVDLC04PorknBeansScrounger", it is not dynamic like later games, so this is not a weird "it's technically ammo" oversight, this was an explicit choice by whoever made it.
@@AceOfBlackjack?????? My brother the gun can’t load pork and beans?
So fun additional fact about gunnut, as with that perk you can talk to either flak or shrapnel to get additional dialogue about a 44 revolver.
Weird, that option is available without any conditions in my game. Maybe a difference between platform/version number/patch level?
@@BelthansMods Most likely, the only reliable source is recent playthrough which is unfortunately a playthrough of a tale of two wasteland so chances are it was in the game but the mod devs patched it in.
However very rare, yes the mod makes super mutants and power armor very impactful as well as terrifying.
What is odd however I said something similar in terms of differences when I was wondering why my copy of New vegas on 360 there are 3 children chasing a rat while PC there is only 1.
@@Tucher97 Yeah it's WILD. Especially since you'd think a PC version of NV would have more NPC's then a console version 😅
@@Tucher97I’m pretty sure there’s two on Xbox, that’s a really funny variance.
@@damianchristopher205 I just have issues that compel me to notice that.
One other feature of the cannibal perk in New Vegas is in the dead money dlc where you can ask dog what the ghost people taste like and after going through the dialogue you can get a perk that makes it so that you don’t have to blow the limbs off the ghost people to kill them anymore, it’s entirely useless once finishing the dlc but it’s still a cool feature.
What about the secret cannibal perk you get for eating four very specific people?
@@user-et1vh7ge9f meat of champions for some king crab, Kimball Gumbo, Cesar Salad, and a House steak.
I was so gona believe the ending bit with the yao gui attacking legionares, but I remember that Yao gui only got added by honest hearts and only in honest hearts, but for some reason the brahmin bull charge I fell for
With Animal Friend, there totally might be some kind of glitch with the companion system. I have had NCR companions, from using the radio, follow me to The Sink and all sorts of other places they shouldn't be. You'd know better than me, I haven't pulled back the curtain of the game. But I could totally see there being some crossed wires with Animal Friend and the companion system causing problems.
I knew the yao guai at the legate's camp was fishy because yao guai in NV are only available in Zion
And then I saw that huge brahmin herd and felt like I was looking at a Fallout 2 special encounter
Considering how few of those there are, makes sense that the perk description doesn't mention it, imagine playing entire game and only seeing like 1-2 perk dialogue options lol 😂
Animal friend not having the ability to summon an animal into combat does feel like a missed opportunity. “Hey you random goat, come with me.”
I remember doing this in Wasteland 2 and 3. I would bring every damn animal around with me. I had 4 goats, a pig, and a cyborg following my party
What's cool is that all the lines received from perk dialogue selections are unique in 3, unlike New Vegas where most (not all) responses are the same as passing the equivalent skill/special check. Makes sense that their are so many perk lines in Blood Ties given how charismatic you have to be to complete it the best way. Personally, I just save scum Vance's hard speech checks. He's annoying to pickpocket too.
12:45 She literally has strange meat pies in her Kitchen.
24:07 Got to love the misaligned iron sights.
Yeah the hunting rifle is off lol I'll have them dead center and still miss from 10 ft away
You know the best part about the Iron Sights? Someone messed up in the design and they decid to keep it to simulate Time Wear
The Brahmin stampede at the very end honestly *feels* like it could be something that Obsidian came up with. Very nice touch. :D
Ghastly Scavenger (variant of Cannibal in NV) unlocks extra dialogue and even a perk.
The dialogue is with Jas Wilkins (12:46) and actually creeps her out even more than the Cannibal dialogue. In Dead Money, Ghastly Scavenger lets you convince Dog to teach you the Ghost Hunter perk immediately.
Just cannibal actually don’t need ghastly for dog
I knew there was one like that with Jas, but I wasn't sure what it was called. Thank you for having my brain remember!
Congrats sir, you sent my sides into orbit with the brahmin charge bit. Great April Fools joke as usual.
Of all the April Fools stuff this was the closet to getting me. You played it so straight for like 20 min that I didn't bat an eye when you said the bear came to help you (Bethesda game gunna Bethesda after all) and I didn't go "Hey, wait a second" until the Brahman. I salute you sir, well played, well played in deed.
Spoiling? Weirdchamp
I know, it sounded so cool too with the bear/bull thematic stuff, lol
Yeah that sounds pretty cool, glad I got to experience it immediately through your comment and not the video
Love how people come to the section about comments on the video, and complain about said comments being about the video. Seriously, it's just sad these people think you're the one looking bad
@@cautiousdissolute5780You expect people to not comment on the video, in the videos comment section?
FUN FACT! theres a hidden perk effect in Fallout 76. If you max out the perk card for Animal Friend you ALSO gain the ability to tame some of the Animals! Its a bit glitchy, but Taming the animal will have it walk back to your camp and become a cool camp ally.
Still learning things about a 16 year old and 14 year old game respectively great video I love learning about all the little things like this that surprise me to this day
Animal Friend rank 2 is a profound disappointment, but rank 1 is kinda op so I guess that balances out.
@around 9:55 "There is a low intelligence option, but it didn't appear because my intelligence is too high". Happens to me every day, there's a low intelligence option, but it didn't appear because I'm so damn intelligent.
You don't have to be undetected to shut down robots with expert, oddly enough. I recently played through 3 and I found that even if the robot is shooting at you you can run up to it, crouch, mash the interact button and you'll get the option.
Hey wait a minute at 12:23 wasn't Tammy from rivet city complaining about her husband leaving her and her son and being a deadbeat who died after he went west?
"It's okay. I eat people too" with Marjorie doesn't strictly require the Cannibal perk. You can say it and it will have the same result without the Cannibal perk, but it will be marked as . Either that, or some mod I have changes that for some reason.
Most people didn't catch on til the yao guai but I caught on right at the lawbringer one, this video is the great FO3/NV player filter
these videos get much more effective when youtube stops telling you exactly how long ago it came out
The cannibal speech check for Mortimer and Marjorie weren’t actual cannibal checks, (the second Mortimer quest was). That’s why they act concerned initially
Jane Wilkins has another form of the Cannibal response that you can tell her, but it's related to a add-on perk to Cannibal. I think it's about eating ghouls and some other stuff, but it might be different things all together.
Thank you, Im sure TTW players will appriciate you covering both. Really crazy how many little easily missed details both games have. -even Fallout 3 despite how much people rag on it.
Fun one in FO4's nuka world expansion, if you have robotics expert you can skip almost the entirity of dry rock gulch
I'm always excited for these April Fools videos from Jeff
There is very few of these in Fallout 4, but they are still there. In Nuka World, you can use Robotics Expert to skip the fun activities of the robots in Dry Rock Gulch.
Very, very interesting stuff. Great video Belthan. These little dialogues should be way more common, not so hidden... (specifically talking about Fallout 3)
Great video! LOL I love the April First additions at the end. Nicely done.
The only thing that would make cerberus' option better would be if he said thank you after 🤣
If he did say it, it would be a W Cerberus moment NGL
That ending is a great fun idea for a wild wasteland mod.
That said, this actually happened to me legit.
I jumped the fence to get into the powder ganger NCRCF camp(Harder to do than it sounds) because I didn't want to pay to get in.
and maybe because of me doing that, I messed with some spawn script or something
and a herd of big horners spawned directly in the middle of the camp, and proceeded to start fucking the powder gangers up, for reference I DID have animal friend perk as well, so it was even more interesting.
To this day I have no idea how that happened, I just headcanon that the bighorners saw me jumping over the gate and all followed my example to take the NCRCF for themselves.
this is exactly why i love these games, i wish they would double down on all the unique dialogue because it really does make each run feel a bit different when your character is recognized for these perks being reflected as character traits
btw that ending would have been perfect for a WW run! you had me going with that one haha, i had to check when you uploaded
I like that the last third of the video is just cool animal friend data.
I knew the Yao guai and the Brahman was malarkey didn't realize it was an April 1st prank though, thought you just left an NPC spawn mod on well researching like a goober LOL.
I was wondering how the heck a Yao Guai spawned in the Mojave lol
With the Robotics Expert perk you can also shut down all the robots on the enclave mobile base crawler in broken steel via the computer on the upper levels
Those are some nice perks for the perks.
Wish I could "like" this video over and over. Great job man!
The fact Animal Friend combined with Wild Wasteland *doesn't* do that in New Vegas feels like such an obvious on the nose play to miss.
I'll have to re-check this myself, but I was certain that the second rank of the Animal Friend perk in New Vegas would cause the Legion's own mongrels to turn on their masters if the Legionnaires were aggro'ed against the Courier. That is, the mongrels would start out neutral but suddenly become allies of the player once the shooting started. If you only had the first rank, then the Legion's mongrels wouldn't attack, at least not initially, but could still be aggro'ed if you got into a fight with the Legion.
Or am I misremembering that?
Not sure but even if they can turn against their masters then it's still pretty shite mate.
There's very few places where this would help you. Nelson has Legion Mongrels and, Fort has A mongrel, as in, one mongrel. Lanius was supposed to have two hounds helping him but they were never fully implemented so no use there. Legion assassin's don't use them or atleast I never saw em use them. OH, Nipton has Vulpes and his gang have like 2 mongrels with them plus tons of them inside Nipton townhall...
So yeah, not very useful either way 😅
Yeah, it got patched with dead money.
Yeah, you must've figured out the gun nut speech check when you were watching my perspective through my eyes when i was playing it last week. Its a pretty cool hidden thing.
Very informative and I enjoyed the ending!
Animal friend lvl 2 is extremely good in Honest Hearts with the amount of Yao Guai in the area as well as Old World Blues since it also affects the Nightstalkers. It's not a pointless perk point spent but lvl 1 is usually enough as it is for the most part. Both for the dialog option it offers as well as avoiding combat with bothersome powerful creatures. Since NV greatly benefits from Speech and Barter, having high charisma is hardly a loss there.
4:33 It's not a big loss considering how ez it is to make mulla... But it is a sort of shame it's not in game because it's a rare Charisma perk, and NV has almost no charisma perks let alone good one's so having this one could atleast add SOME variety.
Animal Friend Rank 2 end game questing with the bear and bull spawns seem like wild wasteland events with a side of hidden hard-boiled easter egg. That's something I had not seen until your vid and your case analysis was quite comprehensive - good find!
That part was an April fools joke
@@EA_SP0RTCENTER well done. as an april fools joke it was very convincing. it felt as though it would be an easter egg kind of thing that obsidian would do especially with the wild wasteland perk active. kudos.
I always take Animal Friend level 2 because of the fact that it brings Nightstalkers to your side. While they're not too frequent an appearance in the base game, it effectively gives you some allies in Old World Blues because they're opposed to the cyberdogs and robo scorpions, the former of which aren't affected by the perk, effectively creating a little faction conflict in Big Mountain.
Most if not all are a unique speech check pass
I really hope that things like this return for a fallout 5
Excellent summary, the last fact got me so excited to try it out! 😂
With the dialogue with Marjorie and Mortimer, you can still say those options, only it says beforehand. I think the latter requires a speech check though
Glad to see there‘s still fallout 3 content being uploaded these days🎉
I did not see this video till way after april 1st, and the endings totally got me. They were just so poetic it felt like some secret in the game. I also never take animal friends one so i would not know better.
Fallout 4 has a similar low intelligence speech check with a protectron at one of the high-schools. It'll actually refer to you as a special education student.
That was a great ending, made my day
Someone should bring up Contract Killer to MATN and let him know that all that Talon Company stress could have been avoided during his YOLO run years ago
I feel like such a nerd for knowing the Yao Guai/Brahmin stuff at the end was fake cause I knew Yao Guai are only in Honest Hearts so it could only be in the Legion Camp through mods or console commands
That april fool gag at the end sold me on subscribing to your channel lol
Very in depth. good video
25:22 Nah I don't mind jokes I just hate you didn't show us all the hidden benefits of NV perks. You said there's like 20 of them but you didn't show all of em 😢
For example taking explorer perk let's you have one dialogue option with Ullyses talking about landmarks I think, that's neat but you didn't mention it or the rest of hidden benefits 😢
Ah, I only checked the base game, not the DLC. My bad. But the reference to 20 instances in FNV was the number of Black Widow responses, not the total number of secret benefits.
It would be hilarious in the history books of the second battle of hoover, how they recount how the courier herded a stampeding pack of Brahmin onto the dam to break the NCR countercharge
Good video! Also, if you ever decide to do a sequel video focusing on the DLCs, I know there is unique dialogue with Ulysses in the Lonsome Road DLC if you have the Explorer perk.
Oh wow, I did not noticed these secret beneifts. I mean, I've seen the speech options but didn't know in full depth. I've played 3 and NV with hundreds of hours. Thanks!
i've always done gun nut or daddy's boy/girl for a first perk because you can't pick anything else good. you have to waste atleast one perk slot on a skill increaser
You what I like is that they brought this same system to starfield you get different dialogue depending on what perk your using adds to the replay value in my opinion I’m currently loving starfield great video love to see more!!
This was _enlightening_ .
First up, thank you Algorithm for pointing me to our host here. Second, I never expected the amount of intricacy that comes with Animal Friend! 😆 Very interesting stuff.
lol you got me at the end there. Well done.
Well now I’m just wishing the bear and bull thing was real. Also, I got suspicious when in the clip you could hear the Brahmin running in behind you, but you ignore it and only take notice when you see the first one run into view, like you was waiting to see the first one run in before looking at the whole thing. Still, pretty funny imagery.
Wow I've always wondered why Talon Co would stop spawning as much after a while. Never realized it was because of the Contract Killer perks. I think they still spawn with Neutral karma though?
Literally had an odd situation where in FalloutNV a random Deathclaw would just show up and attack. (No animal friend perk so it must be the odd spawns) I've been attacked at Red canyon, The tip of Black Mountain, and even the powder ganger camps mear Salon. The only places i know that Deathclaw spawns are were the last two, it's just odd at i was able to stay so far away from quarry junction without even loading the location in for a Deathclaw to spawn or even aggro without me seeing it on the nav marker.
Another thing I would point out on that ending is that I’m pretty sure Yao guai don’t spawn in the Mojave, only in Zion, so I wonder if it was an intentional Easter egg
April fools release date
That would be so cool, you should make a mod where animals come to your aid in specific areas like the ending if you have animal friend 2
I wish the brahmin or yao guai would show up at the last mission if you have rank 2 of animal friend and the wild wasteland perk.
I guess I've been taking rank 2 of Animal friend for no reason...
Good video
You can always say that to Marjorie at the Ultra Luxe, it isn't connected to the cannibal perk, if I recall.
It has written next to it if you're not a cannibal
great video. you should make more like these!
Nice channel, congrats 4 4k subs
I knew about the Animal Friends perk Rank 2 being virtually useless in Fallout 3 from information on the wiki from at least 10 years back. Probably longer.
They made it more useful in Fallout 4 with one of the workshop DLCs that gives cages since you need it to have tamed animals as pets in your settlement. Considering they boost defense and can help with your aesthetics, it's not a bad reason to take the various ranks in the perks if you like settlement-building, but I never prioritize it. I'd rather focus on things like Gun Nut to boost my turret options.
I'm definitely making the last part of the video into a mod at some point.
wait, why is there a yao guai in the legate's camp?? they don't show up at all in base NV, only in honest hearts. is that scripted to spawn specifically for animal friend rank 2? i suppose yao guai could exist on the other side of the colorado river?
still learning new things about this game 15 years after first playing it, so cool.
great vid btw!

Bro sounds like Colonel Campbell in his college days 💀
Do any of the quest perks your granted have any secret speech checks or benefits?
Big hornets attacking Cobb and the Powder Gangers. A dream
so how do the hostile Brahmins at Mole Rat Ranch react when you have Animal Friend in NV?
Non-hostile to the player at either rank (but still hostile to the molerats).
@@BelthansMods huh. Interesting

I had a feeling the yao guai thing was off because I didn't think yao guai could spawn outside of the honest hearts dlc :O
