I lay out how I used the two synth engines on the Novation Circuit Tracks to play four synth parts. This trick is useful for any combination of polyphonic sequencer and polyphonic synthesizer.

Circuit tracks is such a good value. Outstanding workflow, and extreme versatility. Thanks for showing another way to get the most from it.
My pleasure!
Great tip and video, I love taking my Tracks out of my setup and just go make music outside, and while I've used one track for two roles before, it was great to see it laid out like you did here.
I pair the Tracks with an old iPad and a MIDI-adapter, plug the iPad jack out into the Tracks audio in, and I have a super portable powerhouse. It even works with the iPhone, just needs more cables. :)
Great tip!
THIS IS AMAZING. I've been looking at a mobile music making solution that is cost-effective (cheap) and have been looking at the Circuit Tracks. I almost broke my mouse, I hit the subscribe button so hard... LOL Thanks!!!
This is great thank you. I hope they make a Circuit Pro with 8 tracks that can be any type (Synth, midi, sample) and 64 steps per pattern.
Thank you for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed it. That kind of flexibility would be pretty awesome in something like a Circuit Tracks.
It's called Ableton Push.
With usb audio plz
Useful trick, thanks for sharing in a neat way! 👍🏽
Glad you liked it!
Novation should allow midi 1 and 2 to be routed to synth 1 and 2. It's too bad they don't add some new features to the circuit Tracks
Thank you for watching and commenting. That would be a cool feature. It would allow for more flexibility in sequencing.
Wouldn't this be achievable by plugging the MIDI out into the MIDI in and setting the output channels accordingly?
EDIT: It isn't, two tracks cannot use the same channel (except the drums, all four of them share one channel).
The synth engine is the same as novation mininova, and it has it's limits.
They have essentially split the engine into two virtual synths, but it is one and the same.
Each part is capable of six voice polyphony, but that's it. I am glad they kept it at two. I have never had any issues with the synth engine being overloaded or start to glitch. This is probably what would happen if they had pushed it too far.
Besides, I really appreciate the two assignable midi tracks, because I have a bunch of other synths, but none of them has a sequencer nearly as good as tracks.
I love that Matt Damon is into music production!
Haha! This totally distracted me from my work. Had to go back and watch some of the video. Nice!
Thank you! Looks obvious when you look at it - but never figured it out myself. Keep up with content like this!
Glad it helped!
love the pink and blue tracks in Live reflecting the studio pink blue lighting!
Thank you for noticing!
Definitely earned a sub here!
I’ve been doing a similar thing of splitting voices into separate patterns, but this brought on some new ideas for sure!
I only wish we could control velocity of individual notes sharing the same step on the sequencer. THAT would be a game changer.
Thanks for the sub! I'll have to look into that micro-step velocity issue. I seem to remember differentiating some parameters in the microsteps, but I might just be thinking about pitch.
Ah, that‘s how I‘ve been doing it as well. I was hoping for some new hacks :) I really wished that the Midi tracks were 2 more synths. That would be more than enough. Anyways nice video and music! Btw thanks for the tip with the scene mute button :D
Thank you. You're welcome for that "tip", too. It would be great if the unit came with a couple more synths. It would greatly augment the unit's capabilities, especially standalone.
This is a great video. I love different ways to get the most out of a small setup. I've done something like this with the roland sh01a and used ableton to sequence four mono parts on a single patch. I'll have to try this concept out on the Circuit Tracks. Also, do you have any patch collections you like for Circuit Tracks or do you make your own? I have experimented with some of the Synthwave-esque collections from Isotonik such as Delorean Dreams and Chiptune Dreams. I really like your Synthwave and Berlin School jams!
Thank you for watching and your compliments. I believe I was using some tones from the 2nd Delorean Dreams on this track. I've done a little synthesizing using the Components software. I might look into doing more in the future.
Thank you, brilliant idea! I usually use Ableton as synth 3 and 4 by arranging midi channel in each. I have never used the TRacks as a midi controler. Do you just use it as a midi controller with midi channel 1 through 8 recording at the same time?
Thank you for watching and commenting. I've used channels 1-4 (assigned to the Synth and MIDI tracks) to control an external unit. You can find the video of it here czcams.com/video/Nm94mX3S31Y/video.htmlsi=TZNmWF9CjcviJoYf . Channels 5-8 (I'm assuming they're assigned to the drum tracks) are not practical to use, other than to record the rhythmic data, since each of the their outputs are assigned to a single note. I have done this, too, in order to use Ableton as a stand-in for the Circuit Tracks when I needed to use it to control lighting for a live show.
Great video. I was thinking you hacked it to have the external synths play patches internally
Thank you for watching and commenting. Yeah, it turns out it's possible just using the internal synths.
how does the gate config work with a pad and an arp in the same steps? shouldnt the arp follow the gate of the pad since they are on the same step?
This came from page 52 of Ver. 3 of the Circuit Tracks manual, "In Note View, tied notes are shown as orange when the steps are held down as opposed to the usual
red. If notes are added to a step that already has a tied note assigned, they will not inherit the tie-
forward setting and will be shown in red. This ensures that overdubbing on a step with a tied note
does not result in multiple ties.
It is also the case that newly added notes will have their own gate lengths, which may be different
to the length of any pre-existing notes." That was my experience. Although it's been a minute, I believe when I imported the Circuit Track's sequence into Ableton, it show short gated notes over sustained notes. I certainly didn't have to hassle with converting several chopped gated notes into longer sustained notes.
Hello you need use ableton or you can use only circuit track ?
Good question. You only need the Circuit Tracks. I was using Ableton to show what was inside the Circuit Tracks.
@@lectronin thanks 😊
@@lectronin I have sh4d and I’d like to find a groovbox to have more choose for percussion 🥁? Like a tr8 but with patterns.. have an idea pls ?
I’m not quite sure what you mean. In many ways, the SH-4d is more capable than the TR-8 (I have one). It has deeper sound design for its rhythm and more flexibility for its step sequencing. However, it’s not as versatile when it comes to transforming multiple percussion instruments on the fly, like the TR-S. Neither of them have the pattern flexibility of the Circuit Tracks. I know you said “groove box” as in one self-contained unit, but perhaps pairing the SH-4d or TR-8 with an Arturia Beatstep Pro, with its hands-on sequencing might give you what you seek. I hope that helps. Let me know if you find something that fits the bill, or if I misunderstood the problem you’re trying to solve.
@@lectronin I'm looking for versatility, as you say, on every instrument. With sh4d I can't put a distortion effect only on the kick. That's why I'd like a second sequencer, or whatever you want to call it. Synchronize with sh4d. But only for percussion. Thank you very much for your reply.
