    Ruggedized Chromebooks are nothing new at this point. We've seen these classroom-ready devices in all sorts of shapes, forms and sizes over the years. And we've also taken the claims that manufacturers make about them at face value the entire time, too. To be fair, I always assumed the claims about the ability to survive water, 4-foot drops and a bit of stress on the chassis were all legit for all of these rugged Chromebooks. But then again, we've never really tested it out, either. So, we thought it was time to do just that and then some.

    I work for a school district doing the chromebook repairs - I have seen this brand in the worst shape possible, and I'm amazed that model stood up. I have the same brand, but model G8's (previous model to the G9's) in grades 3-8, and I've almost always had to completely rebuild the top from cover to bezel to hinges and screen on every one of them when a student drops them. The bezel is glued to the screen, and when you take off the bezel, you'll find the hinge is broken or lifted away from the top cover every time a screen is broken. You didn't do the "oh, I failed a test" and punch the screen test, pr close up a pen/pencil in the device (slam it down of course) which I see a lot of. And I am shocked the water test did not ruin the mainboard, as I've see that consistently when a water bottle gets knocked over, or at lunch when the device is open and any drink gets spilled on it - then the student fails to let anyone know until, "oops, it no longer is turning on" and take it see what can be done. I guess that means the moisture has to sit on it for longer than a minute to seep down to the mainboard. The repair bill was so high at the Middle School, the principal chose to go back to carts this year instead of one to one to keep them from getting dropped in the hallways and at lunch.
    Thank you for this demonstration, so if HP chromebooks are chosen again in the future, it would mean they have listened to complaints from schools doing self-maintenance, and upped the ruggedness, but I am still more than skeptical that they would still hold up to the rigors student will put them through.

      The school I go to uses the G8 too. Some of my fellow students completely destroy those things…

    That was interesting. Key takeaway is that it is likely going to take deliberate action to actually be damaged.
    Back in the days of handheld calculators, there was an HP salesman who would throw one of their models against a wall at the back of the display to demonstrate how durable they were. According to the story, the TI rep left that show as their similar product would generate an explosion of keys.

    Not sure if you know but education models are designed for super abuse and they come close to be able to handle battlefields. This is why education models are very very heavy compare to normal models as many areas are fortified and reinforced.

      @_w_w_ Před rokem +2

      @@BrittMFH I work on these things... This video doesn't tell much about how much effort and what type of changes are made, and why... Many structural improvement can be done with little impact on weight. However, other changes will increase weight because of more durable material or even use metal. But to keep cost low for education markets, a lot of mechanical design innovations went into these models. My only worries is how well these will recycle because they are difficult to taken apart into pieces.

      I’ve bought them all in k12 as an it director. They all break the same. They all have bad flaws like screws falling out, plastic Ms breaking, easy scratching..etc

    • @_w_w_
      @_w_w_ Před rokem +1

      @@Red_Panduh Newer models are obvious better as more and more design changes are made. If you compare to non-education series, you will notice the education series are much more durable. I can't even break my Acer education model if I want to. You have to realize the schools aren't willing to pay for these systems, so engineers having to do durability improvement with very little additional money. If you start to get into commercial notebooks and their alloy casing are very durable. And for your screw issues, next time, use a toothpick, and dab a tiny bit of white glue before you screw it back.. Once dried, normal amount of banging will not unscrew them. My guess your screw issues are more frequent on Lenovo models, right?

    It's nice to see you both out of the studio!! This durability doesn't surprise me much. We have mil spec devices at my work and they can take a beating as well, but they still come back to IT for service every now and again. (I work in IT)

    I got a case on mines and I unlocked it on developer mode and currently playing a lot of PSP games on it.
    Thinking about a workaround for the shoddy main storage movement and download files.
    I'll probably just get a 1Tb SD card USB stick.
    And set it to main download space it to work as main to free up space.

    Now I understand why I chose a Chromebook over a MacBook. My mom bought a new mac and she accidentally dropped her phone and the corner of the phone hit the screen of the mac and it barely hit it hard it was a small tap and the screen was damaged. So she had to pay $1,000 for her to replace the entire screen. Now on days with chrome books at an affordable price and drop durable this is way better than paying $1,000 to apple to replace the laptops damage. Also I have another connection were you tested out the water test at 6:28 I saw a video, ill put the link here czcams.com/video/JYsKy6HSfsQ/video.html and this woman named Bri had her MacBook in her bag and she had a water bottle in her ba with the MacBook. She took her MacBook out and it was all wet, the MacBook couldn't turn on and she was upset but she found a solution. So basically what she told us to do if this ever happens to us in the future, she told us to put our macs like facing downward. So basically you open the mac not all the way but half way and you face it toward on a table so that the water can come out. she told us that we have to wait at least a week without touching the mac. Me on the other hand I'm a student and I need a computer to work on and use daily. So after that, she finally turned on her mac and it turned on but there was water all inside the screen so basically water damaged. this is another reason why I didn't buy a mac and her me out. Im a big fan of apple and i love their iPhones, iPads, AirPods, you name it. I really do love them, but when it comes to newer macs and something happens to the mac, its another 1k/2k to prepare the mac. So that's why i decided to get a Chromebook and thanks to you you saved my life because now and days chrome books have improved. So now I have a Lenovo Flex 5 i Chromebook and its runs great and I use it to play Roblox, yes it sometimes crashes but that happens when I play with it for a long time. I use it for school and its great. So thanks again for saving my life.

    So, it passed all the normal tests that the manufacturer said it could pass. then you go and destroy it to see if it is indestructible or not. Of course it’s not indestructible, you destroyed it for no good reason, ridiculous!

      This device is for school kids, not the battlefield.
