- Gouache is a very versatile medium. You can use it almost anyway you want. but if you want to get the most of gouache, you need to have the right consistency, at the right time, for the right result.
I show you the do's and don'ts of gouache consistency by painting the same image in two different consistencies.

FINALLY I FOUND OUT THE REAL WAY TO USE GOUACHE!!! UR A GODSEND!!!
😂 happy painting!
Finally I figured out what consistency of the gouache to use. I have been using too much water & making milk instead of a creamy toothpaste like consistency. I also have not been using enough paint for enough paint to fill the larger areas. This is definitely a huge help for me. I have been very flustered by trying to get the paint to flow correctly and not to have brush strokes showing. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us.
Thanks for your message, it's wonderful to read this, as this is the very reason why I'm doing this channel, to help people in their art journey! Happy painting!
@@CecileYadro Thanks so much!
This is incredibly helpful information. I’ve painted very little with gouache because I became frustrated with the consistency as well. Ironically I started doing watercolor which I enjoy greatly. Thank you!
Hello, I am brand new to your channel. Thank you, for this video. Your toothpaste reference made all the difference in the world. I look forward to watching more of your videos. 😊
What a great lesson with the "Do" example painted along side with the "Don't"! It was so much easier to see the difference and understand the results. After years of watercolor I am now trying gauche. Merci beaucoup!
Glad it was helpful!
I've always been confused how people can get gouache to be so opaque on their pieces. Turns out this video points out what I've been doing wrong all this time: using too much water. I guess I just have to let go of the fear of wasting paint 😅
This is soooo good to read this, I'm so happy that you'll take full advantage of gouache now!
Thank you so much! I have always wondered why my gouache paintings look 'patchy'. I admit I am guilty of doing the first mistake because I wanted to save as much paint as I want. Gouache can be pretty expensive in my country 😅
I understand the price issue. But it's going a long way as it's so pigmented, so all in all it's not an expensive medium!
Same. 😅
I love your teaching style and enthusiasm
Thanks a lot ❤️
This video helped me so much as a beginner. To see the mistakes is so important to identify them in my own art. I would love to see more of these kind of videos. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for your message! I'm preparing more videos like this one, stay tuned!

Have fun!

Glad it was helpful!
I found this to be very helpful! Thank you😊
Thanks for your message!
Great video!! Thank you!
Thanks for watching
Very well explained Cecile! I have been treating my gouache like watercolour but will now practice with a creamy consistency of paint. I love your cat - she is so pretty! :)
great! you’ll discover the full possibilities of gouache!
Just took my first real plunge into gouache yesterday. After years of watercolor I did exactly what was the "don't" of this video. And I probably knew better but did it anyway. It doesn't look bad... but it doesn't look as good as it could. I will most likely redo the painting and try to use thicker gouache from the beginning. Great video though... thank you.
Im always happy to help!
Ooooh thank you so much for your videos madame❤
My pleasure 😊
Muchas gracias por este video, buenísimas las explicaciones, además, logré entender a la perfección tu inglés, me voy muy agradecida
Gracias por tu mensaje!
Thank you for sharing this. I have been using acrylic, so now I want to try my hand on gouache.🥰🥰
Go for it!
I love the video!❤️
Thank you!
Very good presentation, usually for many people. Thanks for sharing and waiting for your new video
Thanks for watching!
Thanks very much!
👍
This video was extremely helpful, what I painted earlier today looked exactly like your "DON'T" painting!
I'm just getting started trying gouache, and because of my experience with watercolor I made a dried gouache palette with them... Well thankfully there's still paint left in the tubes because now I know I shouldn't have done that!
Not that I'll waste the paint I've already "ruined", it's still fine for mucking around in my sketchbook.
You can still add more thick layer on top!
I have recently found a great love for gouache lol, and maybe I'm crazy but I tried it on a fairly non absorbent canvas paper and got really nice results
That's cool to know that someone likes this canvas paper for gouache. The one I have has too much texture and I have a hard time filling the paper with paint.
thank you!
You're welcome!
Excellent 😊
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I tried gouache a while back and failed miserably. Now I know it was my consistency. I could never get it to cover good. This video was so helpful!!!! 3:06
Glad it was helpful!
Olha que legal! Adorei sua explicação e como vc tem paciência em mostrar tudo. Te agradeço muito, conhecendo seu canal agora e vou assistir aos outros vídeos tbm!
Obrigado
Thank you! I was painting with milk too. Maybe even thinner. I like it for filling up the backgrounds though at times, otherwise that's too opague. This video was very helpful!
Happy to help!
I just found your channel by chance in Pinterest, and i love it so much, it help me to understand how i have to use gouche color💖✨
Good news! that my channel is helpful, and that Pinterest is sending back people to CZcams.
Very helpful! 😁
Glad it was helpful!
great video. thank you !
Glad you liked it!
I just bought a Himi Miya gouache set, and I'm so excited to try it. It's so satisfying to see the brush glide with the creamy consistency 🥰
Happy painting!
I bought this set of paints do you get the toothpaste consistency? Or should I send it back?
@@kimherald5312 When I opened them they're in a creamy/toothpasty consistency so I think it should be fine. Right now mine has dried but still manages to go back to its pasty state when I spray enough water and mix with a brush.
Just stumbled acroos your channel--excellent video, very helpfui!
Welcome!
I feel like you’re really underrated 😥😥
Thanks! I'm working on it!
Now that you know how to master gouache consistency, you can apply this in gouache layering here: czcams.com/video/I6wSAItqwd4/video.html
Very helpful!! I have been using watercolor for so long and am just trying out gouache. And of course I made the mistake of using too much color. Hahaha. Thank you so much for the video! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
This video was very helpful . I am a beginner
Glad it was helpful!
I feel so silly. I was trying to blend them like they were oils! 😂 Thank you SO MUCH!
Happy to help!
Very constructive video thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this demonstration. I now realize that I have used too much water, and that's why my mixes are weak. TY 😊
You’re welcome! happy painting🎨
Thank you! Been using gouache like watercolor and have been very disappointed.
Glad I could help!
My like is for The cat❤
🐈⬛
❤❤
ok too!
Thanks! So helpful! Please tell what sketchbook this is!? I need a good square one with white pages. Also does anyone know if there are quality sketchbooks with colored paper?
The sketchbook in the video is a Clairefontaine watercolor sketchbook 300 gsm. I love it, but I'm afraid it's hard to find outside of France/Europe. for colored sketchbooks, you can look into the PaintON series by Clairefontaine, too.
Do : ❤ woaaaaow
Dont’ : ooooh, it looks like me doing gouache 😂 (adding water because not enough paint 😂)
😂😜
Thank you for the tip! But does the border of the creamier paint does any harm to the painting?
I'm sorry but I don't understand your question, can you explain?
Loved this video. Thank you. Kiss the kitty for us!
Thank you! Will do!
Cecile... what is your experience with acrylagouache ?
I’m working on a video about it!
I’m so used to acrylic paint I’m having a hard time using gouache my paintings are always patchy I can’t figure out why but now I know because I think I used too much water 😅
Ah! So it's easy to fix!!!
How does it work with Caran D’Ache gauche “cakes”? Just bought them and I find them okey if I wet them before painting…. Need to try this when I come back home. =))
I'm afraid this video won't apply to dry gouache in cakes. it's meant for fresh creamy paint from the tube.
What brand of sketchbook and gouache do use use?
my favorite gouache supplies: cecileyadro.com/favorite-gouache-materials/
What is the best brand for tiny brushes? When I paint, the bristles in my brush don't create smooth lines and its really annoying.
You could watch this video: czcams.com/video/ffY3MglOhyY/video.html
Thank you. But how about showing us how to use the tubs/blocks of gouache…… I am sure a lot of us did not know to buy tubes…..?
This is the first time someone is talking about this, so I never thought it was necessary.
Goodness, are there any advantages to gauche? It looks so difficult compared to watercolour. 😕
ooooh I was about saying the same about watercolor!
watch this to know why gouache is the best medium: czcams.com/video/F8aZV0Wp_14/video.html
Do you ever use a "stay-wet" palette for gouache? I've used it for acrylic and wonder if it would work for gouache or make it runny?
I'm using an airtight palette, not a stay-wet: czcams.com/video/aYzkfJEfhWg/video.html
@@CecileYadro oh cool, I have that one for my watercolors! I didn't think it would prevent the gouache from drying too fast, so that's good to know!
Hi, is there a way to do it so you don’t see brush marks and splotchiness? I can’t seem to avoid this with thicker consistencies.
It's really a matter of consistency, and it varies with each brand, and with colors inside brands. For example yellow ochre from Winsor & Newton will require more water than ultramarine blue from Holbein (just for the examples, not sure this is true!) So you have to add enough water to have the paint flow on the paper and not leave marks, but not too much so it becomes transparent. Practice is key here! Make swatches and take notes if needed, and it will come naturally at some point. Hope this helps.
I have just started painting with gouache and I definitely was a don't. I wanted to ask if you use specific paper or do you use gesse or any medium under the paint?
Thank you for your help.
Linda H
any paper will do the job! you can watch a video here: czcams.com/video/S1GZvA-cuSE/video.htmlsi=uGDksmveiMJlIamY
@@CecileYadro thank you 🙂
Such a great class! I am looking for a color ink so consistent as india ink. I dont like watercolour effects or the thickness from acrylicis. Since I prefer to paint on paper rather canvas, gouache could be an option to a flow paiting and make the drawing full filled. Actually I am looking for an ink that provides same india ink experience: thin and smooth paiting. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you for sharing!
I would go for acrylic ink, the transparent ones, or watercolor ink maybe?
@@CecileYadro 🥰
I really needed to see the blend between the two shades in the “do” portion but it was edited out. Can you point me at another video that concentrates on this?
I have a video just for blending here: czcams.com/video/BAeqrKepMEM/video.html
hope this helps!
Could you please suggest any gouache brand for begginers that comes in tube?
Arteza would be my choice.
Thank you for your suggestion.
Dang my boyfriend bought me a paint set I’ll have to use it
Happy painting!
@@CecileYadro first time wasn’t bad! It’s probably a learning curve like you said takes time. I like the messy but vivid look it creates
Don't tell me what to do
Well, don't watch the video, then!
