In the female voice the accent is on voice sweetness much to the neglect of emotional depth
The voice sweetness is natural, a gift of God. The emotional depth will come with experience. To scale to the level of the GOD of singing (Suseela) is almost impossible to achieve for any human being :-)

Just loved the singing. Ananthu has a beautiful base voice. The inotation in both voicces are beautiful . Enjoyed this song. Not a fan of msv but i loved the composition and singing. Thank you ❤

Movie Nenjirrukkum varai (1967)…starring the GREATEST actor of all time nadigar thilagam Sivaji Ganesan, muthuraman, KR.Vijaya...produced and directed by the great director Sridhar…inspired by a Bengali play titled ‘Hunger”…since the central theme was based on poverty the movie was a black and white movie though Sridhar’s earlier ventures like kaadhalikka neramillai and vennirra aadai were shot in color and also to go with the theme none of the artistes had any make up in this movie. Movie was NOT a box office hit at that time.
Muthukkallo kangal is not just the only melodious song in this movie…Poo mudippaall indha poongkuzhali a TMS solo and Enge Neeyo naanum angae unnodu, a Suseela solo were just as melodious (Madhu, note this song Enge Neeyo in ur “To sing in future” list for sure…will be a super duper hit in ur voice).
Muthukkallo Kangal is based on Hindustani Raga “Megh Malhar” (a Hindustani import just like brindavana saranga)…a close counterpart of raga Madhyamavathi down south.
What a lovely melody this song is…by both these golden voices of thamizh cinema TMS and Suseela…the konjal, kenjal, oodal, koodal, kaadhal, vettkam, naanam all these emotions brought out in the voice of both. Thamizh thirai vaanil iru dhuruva natchathirangal ivargal.

The veteran Ananthu (the voice of TMS in many light music stages and TV shows) and Madhu combo worked out nicely to recreate the magic. I am glad the song was ALMOST sung in its entirety barring the “fadeaway” humming,
“Aa… haa… oo… oo… aaa… aa… ha… haa…
Aa… haa… oo… oo… aaa… aa… ha… haa…”
which was the lynchpin in this song. This song was shot as a dream song of the lovers, the final humming was to bring both the lovers and the audience from the dream world to reality :-) The fadeaway humming at the end ensured that this melody did not fadeaway from the minds of the fans even after 57 years.
The diction, lyrical clarity and the composure shown by Ananthu was indicative of the miles he has logged in his musical journey. Madhu, not to be left behind, matched the veteran word by word. Madhu’s body language and the enjoyment reflected in her face was just out of the world. Madhu’s voice, well it was “Paallil ooriya jaadhi poo” and hence “naam kaetkka thudippadhenna”.

Indha muyarchi oru aann mayilin azhagiya thogaikku innai, endraalum…andha irudhi hummingai paadi irundhaal idhu andha aann mayil thun thogaiyai viriththu aadinaal undaagum azhagukku innai aagi irrukkum.
With the fadeaway humming this effort would have been elevated from GOOD to GREAT :-) (Any particular reason why it was not sung and was treated as out of portion in the syllabus???)

Overall, a master student combo, carried the show to nicety…a memorable effort without a doubt, another feather in Madhu’s cap :-)

Thank you for the detailed write up about the background of the song and our rendition as well.
In all the songs we curate we try to make the version contemporary without compromising on the original composers vision.
This humming in that attempt was added in the beginning using a Hawaiin guitar . We thought instead of us singing it . It would sound different and being a signature tune we could start with that humming being played on the guitars.

@@madzi89 Nothing wrong with that, but being put at the beginning, I felt it lost its significance. Should have positioned it in the end. Since u mentioned guitar, listen to this humming on the veena at the end which was a great way to end and sign off :-)

@@madzi89That's correct. When the letter CHA is preceded by the sandhi ICH it is pronounced as CHA e.g. poovae poochchoodavaa ..here it is pronounced CHA. otherwise it is pronounced as SA. e.g. Sindhanai sei manamae...here it is pronounced SIN and not CHIN.

சுசிலா அவர்கள் உழைப்பிற்காக பாடினார்கள் அவ் வேளையில் அவர் பாடலை ரசித்து பாடினாலும் தலையை அசைக்க முடியாது காரணம் ஒலிவாங்கியை விட்டு வாய் நகரக் கூடாது.. பாட்டு / பாடல் பாடுவது பிழைத்துவிடும்.

I watched the original recording. Susheela stood straight and sang without shaking the head left or right. No acting, only singing. Great singer.

Pl note shaking of head or other bodily actions are not deliberately done. It happens involuntarily.

That's Suseela's mannerism...each singer will have their own mannerisms...even some of the geniuses like madurai mani Iyer had their own body language and mannerisms. At the end of the day what matters is how the final output (rendition) is delivered. Just like an actor can be a singer (the norm those days, bagavadhar, T.R.mahalingam etc), nothing prevents a singer from acting...simply because at the end of the day actors, singers all are entertainers :-)

Ananthu rendered ike a pro. Madhu should try to avoid singing from the nose a little and netutralize the bagavathar touch.
