      @Birdkillersteve It’s a good job we weren’t watching when you were attempting to make a supersonic passenger jet. We developed Concorde capable of Mac 2. Meanwhile you guys gave up thinking it wasn’t possible! You guys have some great CZcamsrs and I love Americans but don’t start getting any ideas of superiority now!! Iv always been interested in welding for hobby purposes, but several years ago I found your channel and have been an avid watcher ever since. I have only recently had the opportunity to change careers from being a professional chef for 15 years, I became a single father four years ago and now the boy is starting school have recently taken a tig course and am currently taking a mig course with the local college with a view to starting an apprenticeship in september. Thank you for the inspiration and the time you put in to your videos. They have helped me a great deal.

    Damn wish I could get you out to do some Submerged Arc Welding. Once did a single weld that was 14hours non stop. 750A the whole time fed by a 1000lb drum of 5/32" wire. It was a cool setup. We had that weld dialed in perfectly.

    I just got started doing some tig work this past week at my job, had to practically teach myself the process on aluminum. I made a mess of my first 3 or 4 pieces and had to grind the snot out of them to make them presentable. But, after talking to my brother and seeing this vid, I don't feel so bad about the quality and appearance of my tig welds.

    One slight correction, short circuit mig is used in heavy fabrication in the stainless steel pressure vessel (asme section IX) industry. We will often have 1 or 2 inch thick plates used for lifting vessels and I will use a short circuit mig to put on a 1/2 inch weld on each side. I'll stack three or four passes horizontally. I'm usually running 22-24 volts with 045 wire. You can lay some serious big boy welds with stainless steel and you can make them look very very good. Very hot and very sound welds. These lifting lugs are often lifting in excess of 15,000 lbs each.

    Just starting out, never welded before (actually, I’m a jeweller, so I’ve braised precious metals on a much smaller scale) I need to frame in a skylight in an old schoolbus that I’m converting into an RV. What type of equipment and type of welding should I learn/use. Not really intending to make a career of it but if I can acquire just enough of the skill to achieve this goal, that’ll suffice.

    I dick around in my garage here and there. I have a good inverter tig that with stick too. I use it when I can. Soon I will start a real project which is oxyacetylene welding thin 4130 for an ultralight airplane fuselage. Welding appeals to me because my grandfather did it as a profession and it's exceptionally useful to the men that like to live in the garage. I'd just like to thank Jody for some stuff I've learned and for being so upbeat about the learning process. Lot of good info from a class act that actually knows what he's talking about. Has fun it seems doing it, Thanks

    Hey Jody, I notice you are using a clear cup here and I've seen you use a Furick ceramic cup to Weld AL in AC Tig before and I'm wondering about the notification on WeldMonger to use these two cups in DC mode. Both cups have a little text in the description that say to only use these two cups in DC because the arc can short out at the metallic wire screen used to diffuse the argon. Are you pulling those screens out and welding without them or are you doing something else I can't see? Welding in AC on AL is a new thing for me and my focus until now has been to make sure my arc length is as short as possible and to keep my torch angle as vertical as I can manage so I haven't even noticed I was welding AL with both the clear and ceramic cups that have the wire mesh screen diffusers for the gas. Could you please comment on this. I know you can't address every question and problem on here and WeldMonger but it seems like a contradiction between the instructions on the website and the application in practice here. Thanks man. And thank you for all you do. I don't even mind paying a tiny bit more on the store because I know it helps support all the education you do for this community.

    Jody thank you for all the great instructional content over the years. Made welding school a whole lot easier and fun. I greatly appreciated it. Quick question...I'm trying to get into some tig projects and am considering purchasing my first machine. I know your reviews are always great. However I don't have the cash to get an expensive machine. At least not yet. I know that a name brand is always nice to get. But I've been looking at a harbor freight Vulcan pro 205. Any thoughts on how it stacks up to some of the more expensive brands? The part that I really like is their warranty on these. Meaning you keep up a warranty and replacement isn't an issue or so it seems. Long-term though I am wondering what if any warranty replacement is available with the name brands. Could those be extended as well? Any help in this decision process would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks again for all you do for everyone.

    Hey Jody, I could really use your help on something. I weld mig aluminum out on the field and I was wondering what is the best way to avoid breathing in argon. My Smoke eater helps but just a little, the Miller respirator also works but I don’t think it’s meant for filtering argon gas. I do have a full face Miller shield but it’s a little heavy. I think I’m getting better with my settings, now I only hear a hissing, no spatter. But I’m definitely still sucking up some argon,I can feel it. Is there a special machine or technique to move the air out?

    • @DeathHead1358
      @DeathHead1358 Před 3 lety +1

      I mig aluminum indoors, usually have a fan or 2 running to help with air circulation. However, I still wear a 3M respirator under my helmet with the 2096 filters. It works pretty good for me, don't have pounding headaches by the time I get home after spooling aluminum all day when I wear it.

    OK, dumb question time. Why is it when welding aluminum with a Tig welder you need AC, but when stick welding aluminum, you need DC?

    • @jameswyatt1304
      @jameswyatt1304 Před 3 lety +1

      It's shiny, but metals like aluminum always have an oxide layer. With AC, half the wave "cleans" by blasting that oxide layer away, while the other half welds by pulling the heat into the pool. The amount of cleaning vs. heating is adjustable as is the AC frequency on newer AC welders. (A friend has a huge old-school TIG welder that just does 60Hz and weighs a metric ton, but works well.)

    • @williamemerson1799
      @williamemerson1799 Před 3 lety +1

      @@jameswyatt1304 So when I can find electrodes for aluminum, it states on the pack DC-. Thats what's confusing.
      I might add that my welder is an old Lincoln 225 AC buzz box if that matters.

    • @jameswyatt1304
      @jameswyatt1304 Před 3 lety

      @@williamemerson1799 wow, I thought that was only a "stick" welder for various steel. I thought tungsten electrodes were used for both DC & AC, so I'm unsure why they'd be labelled DC. Also, most aluminum welding is AC, but DC works better in some cases, but you don't get the oxide cleaning that way.

    • @williamemerson1799
      @williamemerson1799 Před 3 lety +1

      @@jameswyatt1304 Maybe I mislead you. I don't have a TIG welder. I was curious why when using a stick welder to repair AL, the AL electrodes, rods, specify DC- on the package. My buzz box dosen't have DC capabilities.
      But looking at TIG welders and many videos, AC is used for AL. Sorry for the confusion.
