The latest game on Worst Game On Steam is Spider Queen Cave... This is probably the best game in the series. The story is a bit weird but it's a nice mix of scary moments, unique gameplay and comedy. It's clear that these guys put some effort in and no matter how jank an indie game might be, if there's clear effort then it's worth some appreciation.
The dark souls or souls like gameplay at the end confirms that this is basically a game about Quelaag stealing your girlfriend or "senior sister"
This is definitely not the worst game on steam but I'm sure we'll find another gem in this series.
-------
I'm WickedWiz from the What Went Wrong series coming at you with some of the most cursed indie games on Steam. This new series is for games that are so bad, that they're actually good. Worst Game On Steam, is a question that hopefully turns out to be false each time. These are games that won't fit the longer form What Went Wrong videos. - Hry

@@MIAsuxdonkey Calling people you're close to sister/brother is a thing, if a bit old fashioned/formal.
Everyone is an exaggeration.
@@MIAsuxdonkey Yeah? You have a lot of experience living in China and being called brother/sister by everyone?
It cracks me up the way localization was done. "Senior Sister" is more so a direct translation to the term "Senior". The girl is likely to be a senior in uni that you have a crush on instead of being an actual sister.
Edit: It blows my mind they integrated the Eight Triagrams into a puzzle which is wholly obscure and can be incredibly difficult to solve without the guide or prior knowledge
Edit2: The story is so insane. You as the main character are the descendant of a taoist sect. The spider spirit is some sort of mutated/fallen fairy spirit who was eaten by Sun Wukong.
Chinese Myth is crazy shit...shame that the only one consistently used outside its homeland is Sun Wukong.
Amazing game
for any westerners who are still confused,
its supposed to be the word for "female senpai" in your(western) language.
could be just older sister... but botched direct translate would just say 'sister' or 'sistersister'. Gendered words for senpai(lol) are more common in china(and chinese-speaking places), so its probably that.

Yeah, but hes referred to as The Monkey King or Sun Wukong in English.
"The monkey" doesnt refer to Sun Wukong. It only means the animal or in some idioms, an addiction to a drug or male genitals. So, this line comes off as really funny to an English speaker.

While this game seemed to rely primarily on asset packs, they still managed to correctly script things and got fairly decent audio for the main character. I think if this developer was able to get an artist and 3D designer to work with them and make assets for a game instead of needing to use premade ones, they have a good shot at making some really nice and creative games.
Yeah, honestly it's decent. Sure the guy can't make assets, but hey not everybody needs to make some in order to create games.
Honestly, kinda surprised how far assets have gotten
Like these are some really good quality assets used!
Far cry from the shit Digital Homicide would churn out with flipped assets lmao
That's not what an asset flip is. A flip is buying a bunch of stuff and using it to cram together barely functional shovelware.
I know that wasn't your intention, but calling it a flip and thereby implying that someone's genuine creative effort is worth less because they couldn't hire a team of graphic designers is honestly quite an insult
This isn't an asset flip. It's clear this game was designed with intention rather than being bullshit slapped together to make a profit.
And assets bought from the market isn't "stolen", so you shouldn't imply that they are without proof.
@@yeyeande There was at least one asset I don't think they got permission to use, the detector from STALKER. Unless they got approval from GSC, they most likely took it from one of the numerous asset compilations floating around online of rips from the game files, which yes, is "stealing" if they aren't giving any credit and didn't get permission.
I doubt they meant it as stealing, and being completely fair, it's entirely possible it was thrown into an asset pack that seemed legit and they had no clue it was taken from a game.
Fair point, though. Thank you!

My guess for that weird elevator, is that it's an anti-frustration tool. If you happen to not be able to get to the bottom within the timer, it lets you just use it to skip the section. It seems like this game has A LOT of pretty decent accessibility features, and it doesn't seem to fault the player for using them!
Yeah, that's what I think they are for too. You can see on the second elevator at the start of the spinny platforming section it has big wheelchair accessible symbol on the sides.
It's pretty insane how as much as janky as the game was, there seemed to be genuine thought put into it's elements, like the dev wasn't great but genuinely did try to make something fun
@@Jenner_IIC thing is, I think the Dev is great. From the disclaimer, this is their first game, so likely don't have much in the way of experience. In saying that, instead of a huge, buggy, mess that's barely comprehensible, they made a legitimately interesting game, with a lot of heart and hard work. Clearly a LOT of thought went into the work, the story, the characters, the game play loop, and even the more minor things. Yes, the game still needs a lot of work to polish it up, maybe a few tweaks to make it really shine, but for a first game, it's genuinely good from what I can see.
The fact that it gives the password if you keep spamming is a good thing imo, I hate LPs where thirty minutes of the gameplay is the person searching for a scrap of paper
To me those "protections" felt a bit too easy. I understand lowering the difficulty, giving hints, etc when the player gets stuck. But to outright solve the puzzles for them takes away the actual gameplay aspect of it. The one where the tables start to glow seemed better. It takes away tedious search, but still requires the play to go and get the things.
7:22 As a child, I had this constant recurring dream where I come home from school, get on the elevator and press my home floor, but the elevator never stops and constantly goes up higher and higher. The elevators in my apartment were also quite claustrophobic, so it was a terrifying experience that kind of traumatizes me to this day. That part reminded me of that and I was spooked for real haha
I also recall having lots of faulty elevator nightmares as a child back then. They really did also haunt me.

It's a game I would have wanted to make as a kid "and it will have everything in it!". I have to admire the ambition and the weirdness
By “Senior sister” they mean she is his older classmate/coworker/work colleague. The languages of china are pretty hard to translate to other languages because of how many phrases are based in common historical/cultural knowledge. It’s like younger boys calling older women "noona", and girls "unni” in Korea. Both of which mean big sister. It’s also common for older women to say “listen to this unni(big sister)” and the like at times.
The part where the MC went 'cocky' is a reference to Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where after Cao Cao had his crushing defeat at ChiBi, started laughing at the lack of ambush to actually kill him. And the joke is every time he starts laughing (or as you put it, act cocky), an ambush immediately found him.
I did some digging, and most of the negative reviews are from chinese gamers, many who don't like the game and others that claim they stole assets without buying them and used them to make the game. Most of the store assets in the game have no commercial/resale license, so it was illegal for the devs to actually repackage them and sold them as is. I think the game in early access/early versions did not have the support system so people got really frustrated at the puzzles.
So it's a kind of Chinese Limbo of the Lost then?
So there are two things; illegal assets and too hard to enjoy?
@@zarrg5611 Well, in my mind, the dev should be crowned the king of Limbo
The senior sister house look like a map in gmod tho
This game looked interesting, so I was trying to find out more about the dev(s).
Their name is in simplified Chinese (帅宅快乐屋工作室 = Handsome House Happy House Studio), so one would assume they are from China. But everything about the flat, and the cars, and all the general environments are more like Taiwan or Singapore than China.
Simplest explanation is that yes, it's a Chinese game, and that the devs have used assets that are not local to China. Perfectly understandable!
Not the sort of game I'd ever play, but perfect for channels like this - very enjoyable to watch.
>Ignores booty call

Have my sub and my respect sir.
😅 the most replayed moment was the elevator jumpscare, honestly I had to do a double take when that happened but I am surprised that the chest stomp scene wasn't most replayed.
Alright. So this story is a bit confusing, but I'm pretty sure the gist of it is that a powerful spider spirit (effectively the queen of the spiders), was sent by heaven to fight Sun Wukong, but was defeated. The spider spirit, drained of her power, was found and imprisoned by Mohist monks in the cave that the player goes through. The spider spirit was able to appear as a beautiful woman, and seduced generations, forming a powerful and rich bloodline. Eventually, in the form of the Senior Sister, she met the main character, and recognized him as the descendant of the Mohist monks. Seducing the main character, she led him to the house of her bloodline, and tried to kill him. however, he survived. Recognizing the main character's power, she makes an offer to become her servant, but he refuses, defeats her, and makes her transform into... Someone. However, I don't understand why the Mohist monks would imprison her, why the Senior Sister disappeared, what the deal with the monsters in the beginning was, and who the player makes her transform into.
I am guessing that the monsters are the guardians to stop people trying to free the Spider Queen
An attempt to answer your
1. Spider demon are basically like succubus, assumed to be evil in most circumstance
2. The Spider demon shapeshifted into the Senior Sis to lure the player
3. Being around a Spider Demon is an easy way to bring bad luck
4. I'm 50% sure it's a d*ck joke
I think they player character tells her to turn into whatever the player has as their steam profile picture, likely under the assumption that it is an anime girl.
She can drain me to create her blood line.... if you catch my drift.
At the same time it has to be a horror game so certain parts are not gonna fit 100% into the lore bc they just wanna be spooky. Like why did the monks build a fucking parkour in the spider dungeon? I don't know.
Started with you examining a house key in a basic spoopy game, ended with you playing anime-cutscene darksouls. Quality
That was genuinely pretty damn cool. I REALLY want a whole game based on the first part of this game, a horror game with that much depth to how you interact with things.
I like how the bolt cutters were not only misnamed by Wiz but the game itself
This game feels like a demo to show potential investors. "Look we can do 2d side scrollers, here's action platforming, now it's a 3d hardcore combat game, now it's a puzzle, now it's horror" There are some pretty good game foundations in parts of this, and I kind of want to try that side scroller, but when you just start jamming mechanics together like this you get the game equivalent of The Homer car. I think it's qualified as 'good' here because all the mechanics were competent and the visuals weren't bad. Which for this series is rare.
I feel like it's an end of year class project at a game developer college, with each section being done by a different team.
It also feels like a fever dream when you play it, and it has to count for something.
please never stop doing these they're gold
I was about to say something similar.

more of too literal.
Most Asian languages have a default to refer to people by their societal positions to the speaker.
in this case, it's likely meant to mean *"my female, close friend that is a little bit older than me"*.
It's a language trait that always introduces some level of clunkiness when localized; it's an increasing trend to just use the literal translation as westerners are beginning to clue into this quirk of the language.
Note: that all Chinese-influenced Asian languages are largely the same in literal translation in very formal speech, but become increasingly divergent as they approach the informal/casual side of the scale.
he says 学姐 which is directly translated to senior sister, but in a more english sense it's more like calling someone a respected older close friend

helluva first date
I like the idea of "Novice Protection" aka "Noob pity win"
For people who are concerned about the sister thing, in many asian countries and that includes china
Sister can also just mean Young women. And brother can mean young man
So senior sister, is a google translation error of the young girl who is older then me.
This is Chinese but if you watch anime its the same as the characters saying senpai.
China has the same thing but it is gendered shīxiōng male and shījiě is for women.
As a Filipino, we have a word for older brother and older sister (kuya and ate, pronounced a-teh). But many use those words to people who aren't even related. I've been called kuya many times from total strangers just for being nice.
It's basically like Japanese "onee-san" where a younger guy can call a slightly older girl "older sister" but everyone knows it just means "older than me female". Same with "onii-san" for older males. It's something you might even use to call someone on the street if you don't know them, it's fairly polite and neutral in tone.
As a malaysian we call women older than us as “kakak” which means sister and “abang” = brother. So i can vouch for the asian thing
If this was explained earlier maybe it would have more positive votes and not only from Alabama.
@cat6th it probably wasn't explained because calling someone older a brother or sister is a cultural norm from where the game was made. And the game is being told through the guy's perspective google translated which means he wouldn't go
"Big sister is calling. But she's not really my sister. I just call her that because it is term of endearment in this southeast Asian country."
I love your videos Mr. Wizard. You're like Pyrocynical but you don't insult everything all the time. You give credit where it's due and have realistic expectations.

@@SpringDavidSo in this regard its pyro but worse?
@@SpringDavid Which led him to inappropriate interaction with a minor.
I believe him that he genuinely didn't mean to, but that's the risk you take in those kinds of anonymous online fetish spaces. Especially since a lot of them intentionally don't vet their members because their mods/admins are pedos/hebes
Pyro but he isn't a degenerate.
Holy crap, I didn't expect him to actually Batista Bomb her at the end.
This...seemed like such a wild ride. I don't really know how to really react and what not to it but color me surprised and somewhat intrigued by the sheer ridiculousness and randomness of it all.
Oh and yeah, the bits with the phone and stuff. Seemed simple enough but honestly found it to be an amazing bit. Then there was that gate with the underwater relics and stuff that were moving around among other things. Really impressive, might be janky, but yeah.
Oh and the novice protection system...Mmm...might be better to have the option to toggle that on and off but yeah, I can see where they were going with that one, or so I think so anyways.
Why didn't they just finish the 2D platformer?
Your videos are pretty fun, you should start a series where you talk about shady and derailed games/developers
I assume this is self aware

I actually liked the part where the beginning was inside a really nice house but when you leave said room you enter kinda sketchy hallway filled with graffiti. I also like the fact that you leave your door wide open for anybody enter.

I, on the otherhand, would have at least attempted the evil spider-goddess dominatrix girlfriend route.

Good video! 6:29 is a Chinese meme, ‘4 major human nature' (in a self-deprecating way):
Recorder refers to keep repeating/following what everyone else is saying;
Pigeon refers to not wanting to show up for appointment/date (those you are asked to have, but do not really want to have);
Lemons refers to jealousy;
The fourth one is another Chinese meme, roughly means 'you ultimately will enjoy something you originally refused, if it is too attractive'.
Honestly, it doesn't look like a bad game. It's not good, but we've seen wayyy worse than that.
19:36 That device on the ground is an artifact detector ripped straight from Stalker: call of pripyat
Definitely seen this same house asset used in multiple horror games.
The backup camera thing was really really cool and unique!!
I kept waiting for this game to really go downhill, but it never did. What a subversion of expectations, god damn.
That mini game on the computer no joke looks like it could be a high quality indie game. I would play a full fleshed out version of that honestly, the pixel art looked really good too
Yeah, it looked similar to Celeste, at least it reminded me of that.
@@nuno-cunha I got celeste and dead cells vibes from it, idk why dead cells maybe the way loot and weapons looked but yeah for a mini game inside another game super surprising
I'm not sure, I read on another comment that it was a free unity asset, like an example type thing.
@@smallfryproductions319 that honestly makes more sense than anything else, I saw comment say the mansion map was an entire ripped asset so that could most likely be the case. Whoever originally made it has some talent that's for sure
I had no idea you had more than one channel this is amazing
about the senior sister bit: what the devs meant was probably "older sister", the word for "sister" in chinese is different depending on if you are referring to an older or a younger one
So this is Subnautica, Silent Hill, granny, dark souls and a bit of a dating sim all at once?
I can totally see the developer trying on Steam to tag the game with the genres 'Bonerific' 'Giant Stomp Fetish' or 'Lady That Has Boobs'
impressed by this, i thought this was the vid series for bad games - this is a banger
This game is actually pretty impressive for a first time developer. Hopefully they keep at it and make more in the future.
This guy is truly a main character of all time
Best tip for dealing with almost any maze is to keep the wall to your left at all times. Don't take random directions and hope you'll get there; keeping the wall to one side at all times ensures that even if you navigate into dead ends, you'll still navigate out of them and continue on toward the exit. The only mazes this doesn't work with are ones designed not to be solved so easily, those will often have bridges, or sections which circle back around to a section you've already visited.
22:40 This is usually the kind of stuff I say when the shrooms kick in too....
oh no i hated that elevator scene so much. whenever there's an elevator in my dreams, it either just goes down and down, really speeds up, or just fucking flies through the roof and hurls through the air. always a nightmare. i have no problem with elevators irl so i don't know where this comes from lmao. i think i would've just quit the game after the elevator went down further than should be possible.
I feel you, they never go well in my dreams, stairwells too. At least they break the fourth wall for me and I know I'm in for a wild ride.
I'd take a good director/story creator that flips and modifys asset packs over someone that can make their own assets but gets confused reading "Clifford the Bigger Red Dog".
This game is really well done, but I'm convinced they're stitched together store bought assets, but so well done. I would go as far as to say sewn together assets.
A good sign of one's skill is not in what assets are made/used...but HOW they are used.
Just like cooking...you can have the finest ingredients, but it's worthless if you can't cook for shit.

The attention to detail is actually excellent in this one. Even if it was assets, they're used really well.
Eventually, one of these chinese indie horror games will be unambiguously good and become a hit.
