Thank you. You are right, it is a viable punish option with more damage. After testing the parry version of this punish looks a little safer compared to the throw. The trade off here being that you can't enter Qi stance after this particular punish. Sorry man, but as a rep 43 and with a skill rating ranked 25th best Shaolin on PS4 I feel obligated to comment. I feel like this was more of a video commentating the overall moveset of monk rather than giving insights on his combat kit's practicality. However, you did well describing the hierarchy of needs regarding his feats and perks. Also, I did appreciate a breakdown on milisecond data. Though with my time spent on monk I have an intuition with how to throw off the opponent's timings with moves and feints throughout the kit, hearing the actual numbers was refreshing and maybe gave me an idea to test. Maybe given my experiences I'm just being a little overly critical, so I apologize if you feel I've come off rude. The community definitely needs more Shaolin that utilize the kit, so I hope your video is well found by the community.
Thank you. 🙂 I appreciate your insight and critiques. My video admittedly is more focused towards players without Shaolin experience, I aim to try and include as much information as possible as I've found that there are still new people coming to the game even this late into it's life cycle. Move explanation and demonstration can be very tedious for experienced players who can intuitively get this information on their own but I try to make my guides as accessible as possible. Punishes and Feat breakdowns is a little more advanced so I do hope that higher skilled and more experienced players can still learn something. I may try to make more advanced videos in the future, though I would need more experience with the character. At your skill level and experience with Shaolin, this guide may have provided little to no help for you but I do appreciate you taking the time to watch it and comment. I welcome all feedback and it's always great talking to people with high level character knowledge and experience. I do hope that more players will pick up Shaolin though, he's a very well designed hero.

My monkey! Yes! Hes such a fun hero, great mix ups, fluent playstyle, wide variety of moves and on top of that a hero that requires skill to play effectively. His only downside is that he has no real opener what can make some fights a bit stale... Wouldn't Tiandi already be my main this would probably be my second choice. Great guide as per usual. Thank you. 🙂 Shaolin has a lot of nuances that the game doesn't really tell you, I'm not a Shaolin player myself but he's exceptionally well designed and proof the devs can make really good heroes. As for openers, he's kinda dependant on his top light or maybe back stepping an attack into Qi but I don't think it's enough of a problem as he's got damn near every option once he's in Qi stance. Still a fun hero albeit one with a very high skill ceiling.

Countering Qi stance is highly situational and requires a hard read on each side every time, if that makes sense. There is no one counter to all of his options like stepping away from Aramusha.
Very true, Shaolin has options a plenty but they're just as punishable as they are effective. This makes him a high skill cap character though which I think is a good design choice.
Looking good, as always. Sholin's just so badass he doesn't need his weapon to parry, in fact, he only uses a weapon because his fists would be OP. Kinda hyped i was right about the new Wu-lin hero having a two-hander, when will be be seeing them? Or Highlander...I like big fek-off swords XD

Another great guide, I'm just here for the Max punishments I don't know them well, only rep 3 at the moment lol, and also is the guide and punishment still the same or nerfed?
Pretty good guide, I always admired a skilled Shaolin. I really wish I could play him though, but my coordination skills are poor and I can't option select worth a damn XD. Another thing "Bo staff" is Japanese, in Chinese wushu it's called a "Gun" (pronounced "Goon")
Thank you, glad you liked the guide. You know it just wouldn't be one of my guide videos without some kind of mistake in there. 😅 I love comments like these though, it's awesome to learn more about the different cultures this game offers. As for option selecting it's actually just character specific to be honest, you main Nuxia if I recall? Sadly she doesn't have an option select where heroes like Conqueror have two.
I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Shaolin is designed as a team fighter, the sweep is a reflection of this and helps set up ganks, in 1v1 all the sweep would do is loop his Qi stance at either 12 or 14 damage and quickly drain stamina. One of his unblockable attacks does deal 40 damage, the other isn't far behind and it being locked behind the kick only lends to a team fight nature.
Thank you. 🙂 The execution is a limited time event execution. A tie in between For Honor and Assassins creed. Unfortunately at the moment it is currently unavailable, I have no idea as to if it will come back.
I know I’m late to the party on this one, but for oos throw punish, wouldn’t top light, any heavy, hold for Qi stance, then the kick move to light all be guaranteed if you time the kick correctly as they’re standing up? Adds up to 57. Not positive, just a thought.
It's a solid idea and it can probably catch a few players online. Unfortunately though the kick isn't guaranteed, your opponent is able to dodge even if you let the kick off at the earliest possible time.
@@Shortskeez It's still a decent option, you could even use it to condition opponents to dodge early so you can GB them again. Hope the video was helpful. 👍
I realize you made this ages ago but I am curious what people feel like the easiest/best way to enter Qi stance is. I seem to really struggle on when I should do that.
Used to be top light as it was 400ms. However it depends on your opponent really. If they have difficulty reacting to lights then you can use those, you could also back step light/heavy though you remove the option of your kick landing. A blocked heavy will do the trick nicely, if your opponent is parry happy then feint to GB will catch them allowing you to punish and flow into Qi stance.
Damage values have been reduced across the cast since this was made but Shaolin retains all of his moveset. The only notable nerf was his top light opener being slowed to 500ms.
I I don’t want be that guy but I’m pretty sure it’s a jo staff because of the technique but bo and jo staff are the same just different techniques and the faction shaolin is in is China and China used the jo staff
Idk About Nukekubi, I Use It, And It Makes Infinite Chains INFINITE, And It’s Great For The Mindgames, The Worst Possible Thing Is To Run Out Of Stam Mid Mindgame, Nukekubi Makes This Not Possible (Most Of The Time)
It's certainly not a terrible feat and by all means if you use it effectively than who am I to tell you otherwise? With regards to Shaolin though, Invigorate is his strongest feat from a competitive stand point and if you get into many team fights. Nukekubi only grants stamina replenishment on a hit and only for the Shaolin which is why I don't recommend it. As said before though, it is usable if you can make it work.
I'm late here but I'm hoping you see this question. Occasionally when playing Shaolin I'll randomly chain three heavy attacks in one combo and I'm not sure how to replicate it. In training it just says chain heavy R/L but it almost looks like the zoning one. Any idea?
Yeah i guess it was kinda hard to think of how could monk with a bo staff deflect for example poleaxe or greatsword. But still i think it would look better if he would block atacks with staff somehow, because in real life he would most likely lost his hand in 10 seconds of combat ,cause none metal is strong enough to compleatly block such a strong impact . (sorry for some gramatic issues english is not my mother language :D)
0:18 they just want to show the legendary shaloin conditioning of hands or arms(as its not 100% blocking with his wrist braces) etc ._. a bit over the top though
Just seems more practical to use a solid staff to block and redirect attacks than your wrist. Then again, it would be more practical to hold one's weapon between themselves and the opponent instead of behind them.
@@Mattman_90 yeah, holding it on the back is just how some forms beginn, but generaly you point it towards the oponnent, the shaolin is more showing of the staff form, especialy the monkey staff forms than focusing on actual combat moves..
Death point strike is all about matching a rhythm to the animation. Take Shaolin into training and as you hit with the first light, that's when you want to connect the second. Think of it as counting a beat in your head, 1,2,3 1,2,3. Then change the tempo if you wish to delay it. It does take practice but it's worth doing if you play the character regularly. If you've experience with Shinobi, Peacekeeper or Centurion they have similar moves that require similar timings.
I didn't play Goki during Marching Fire's initial release but I can imagine that was very frustrating. Then again a lot of matches for Pre rework Goki were.
I can understand that, I'm not a great fan of his aesthetics, more that his moveset is well put together. I think Ubi missed an opportunity to let players express a serious shaolin monk as well as a playful monkey king style.
Well I plan to start doing some livestreams every once in a while so hopefully I'll have plenty of opponents! Chivalry is never dead friend, not as long as we still have the Knights!
@@eggster9060 I don't think there is any similarities. The execution is just from an event although there is an Easter egg on shaloins default appearance. Apparently the Chinese writing on shaolin’s body reads "Nothing is true, everything is permitted". Which is a reference to the assassin's creed series.
25 damage is fine for his heavy attacks, they're actually faster than most heroes, his heavy finisher in particular has good damage with a good speed. I could accept 30 damage on his deflect heavy honestly, would make it a little more rewarding to do. Overall his damage is fine, his most damaging moves are in Qi stance, it's also where his pressure is so having lower damage openers is a fair counter balance.
@@Mattman_90 You make a decent point about the rest of his damage via Qi Stance but I'm talking about boasting the damage from his heavies (starter) to 30 because of 3 main properties: 1. Does it have special properties (Hyper-armor; unblockable, unguardbreakable [even though they technically have a 100ms window])? 2. Will it hit from guardbreak? 3. Is it an easy parry/ is it easy to spot an incoming feint? Shaolin's heavy is very telegraphed to the point where even noobs can parry it without a U.I. hud. It is also pretty slow. It's like 700-800ms whereas Cent's heavies and Aramusha's top are 600ms and deal 25 damage, Shaolin's is slow and easy to guardbreak from a feint. While he does hit from guard break it's the weakest starter heavy across the Hybrids (on par with Cent for now pre rework and just above Valk's 28). I don't think that giving him an extra 5 damage on his starter heavies will break him since it'll take damn near half your stamina bar to open people up.
@@demonwolf570 His heavy speeds are decent. 800ms openers is required for a heavy on GB, plus his heavy finishers are 600ms dealing 35, which can be accessed after a GB punish. Damage/Speed balances aren't always equal across classes. Take Orochi's Top heavy opener at 700 ms dealing 35 Damage. Peacekeeper deals 23 damage at 900ms. (Not including Deep Gouge). In raw damage and speed it doesn't seem fair but differences in their kit can balance it. Shaolin has so many options when he's in Qi stance, so I believe his damage numbers are fair.
@@Mattman_90 No Shaolin since the dawn of time has landed a heavy finisher that hasn't been blocked, parried, deflected, or dodged. It's true that heros aren't equal but the scale back in his heavy damage wasn't necessary. Gladiator has plenty of mixup potential but he still has 35 damage starter heavies. So does Zhanu.
@@demonwolf570 Both Gladiator and ZhanHu's heavy openers deal 30 damage. They're also slower than 600ms. Yes Gladiator has options after but not many, ZhanHu has more and is similar to Shaolin there with the exception that Shaolin has quicker and more damaging options depending on your ability to read and react. How would giving Shaolin 5 more damage on his slower heavy openers affect his finishers? I believe Shaolin's damage is fine where it is, he does have an undodgeable 30 damage heavy and and Unblockable 40 damage one. He has one of the best kits in the game and I think he's very close to being one of the most balanced and well designed heroes.
Honestly I'd like Shaolin if he just shut up. If his lines were more stoic and disciplined I'd love him. But he's a clown and a piss taker, thus annoying.
MightyMattman90 I’m fairly new to for honor, only rep 1 and my matches are very sporadic. Some duels I hit all my blocks, some duels I can’t. Fun game though

The Chinese pronunciation of Qi is "Chi". That's why I pronounced it as such in the video. Doesn't really matter in the long run though as long as the stance is understood in the video. 🙂
Shaolin is a little easier to fight these days but his sheer number of options can make him a tough opponent. I'd suggest playing Shaolin yourself to get a feel for the character, see how players counter you.
Go into training to practice the timing. You have to hit the next attack as the first strike lands. It can be delayed too which makes the timing trickier. It's very similar to PK's GB stabs or Shinobi’s sickle rain.
In the works my friend. Although there will be a bit of a delay as I've a few personal issues interfering with CZcams lately. Will be released as soon as possible though.

As for option selecting it's actually just character specific to be honest, you main Nuxia if I recall? Sadly she doesn't have an option select where heroes like Conqueror have two.
@@TheEpicPancakeMaybe he'll just teleport behind someone pulling out a glock. 😂
@@Mattman_90 True, Nuxia doesn't have option select, but some how I still get by.
They need to make sweep guaranteed, and make his unlockables 40 damage, he's a great character, it's just his damage is rough at top tier play
Amazing video but what is the execution on the beserker as it looks epic
Thank you. 🙂 The execution is a limited time event execution. A tie in between For Honor and Assassins creed. Unfortunately at the moment it is currently unavailable, I have no idea as to if it will come back.
I want there to be updated versions just in case the Core Combat Update really messed up the hero
I'll be working on updated guides once the new season has started.
MightyMattman90 gotcha. My bad I should’ve tested it myself before spitting it out. Thanks for the video man!
@@Shortskeez It's still a decent option, you could even use it to condition opponents to dodge early so you can GB them again. Hope the video was helpful.
👍
*_I like this guide, do Nuxia._*
I'm glad! And I have already. :)
@@Mattman_90 *_Wtf I already saw it._*
That changed the zone attack to only do 3 damage

@@Mattman_90 honesty didn’t expect a reply. Thank you so much!
It's what I do.
Wait, shaolin has both good damage AND counter abilities??? Im decently new to fh but this seems like an amazing character!
I'm quite open to the fact of being wrong with some of my content. I see it as an opportunity to learn more. So thank you. 🙂

Any idea?
Hmm, Shaolin isn't able to chain three heavies back to back, I will look into this though and get back to you. 👍
Usefull on maxpunishes
I'll take useful. 👍
have you done an aramusha guide? if not please do one
I have not yet made a guide for Aramusha but I'll be happy to make one. 🙂
Oh yes an Aramusha guide please :)
In time my friend, Musha has a mechanic that's spotty at best so the guide may take a little while but I'll be happy to do it. 👍
Thank you!
Damn, i didnt know his light deals 7 damage
They used to do 12,6,6. It was a welcome nerf honestly given the many options Shaolin has.
I like shaolin's kit but why the hell does he block atacks with his HAND ??!!
I have no idea, the staff would be a much safer option but I guess it was down to having him be able to deflect.
@@ondrejkral209 Oh I agree with you. Doesn't matter how tough the metal, ain't no way you're blocking a shugoki slamming that club with your wrist.
He has amour on his arm
@@MrGay-iw6tm He does but force exerted onto your arm is way more dangerous than it exerted onto a solid weapon.
Do you know what hurts Monk? Raider hyper armor heavy swings of death.
That hurts everyone.
I mean, he can fight with the best of them so who am I to judge. The man can teleport so maybe blocking with his wrists isn't so abnormal after all.
@@Mattman_90 yeah,true xD
How do you get damage to appear in chat? I'm fairly new to this game if you can't tell. :)
In your options menu. Select user interface and scroll down. There's a box you can tick called 'Display Combat Damage In Log'. 🙂
So how do you do the unblockable counter when in the Qi stance?
Superior block counter is a light from Qi stance, it only becomes unblockable when used against an opposing blockable attack from the same side.
Can you help me with the death point strike I don't know how to do it I get it sometimes but it's not constant
Who hated playing old goki vs shaolin since his triple tap would break your armor
I didn't play Goki during Marching Fire's initial release but I can imagine that was very frustrating. Then again a lot of matches for Pre rework Goki were.
Idk the character design looks bad to me. I like the clean orange robes. Monks should look clean.
I can understand that, I'm not a great fan of his aesthetics, more that his moveset is well put together. I think Ubi missed an opportunity to let players express a serious shaolin monk as well as a playful monkey king style.
Matt when can we challenge you in combat or does chivalry not exist anymore? 🤔🤔🤔
Well I plan to start doing some livestreams every once in a while so hopefully I'll have plenty of opponents! Chivalry is never dead friend, not as long as we still have the Knights!

bro i’ve seen so many shaolin recently help
Requiescat in pace
They need to bring that execution back!
@MightyMattman90 Ezio copystriked that one.
@@eggster9060 Assassin's Creed hitting us CZcamsrs where it hurts.
@MightyMattman90 I don’t know anything about Shaolin, but why is/was he so similar to Ezio/Assassin’s creed saga?
@@eggster9060 I don't think there is any similarities. The execution is just from an event although there is an Easter egg on shaloins default appearance. Apparently the Chinese writing on shaolin’s body reads "Nothing is true, everything is permitted". Which is a reference to the assassin's creed series.
I like him for one main reason: high skill gap.
Shaolin does have a high skill ceiling, a very risk vs reward style character. I love his moveset, but I just can't stand his mannerisms/character.
Do you think Shaolin's heavies should do 30 damage because of the long wind up animation?
25 damage is fine for his heavy attacks, they're actually faster than most heroes, his heavy finisher in particular has good damage with a good speed.
I could accept 30 damage on his deflect heavy honestly, would make it a little more rewarding to do.
Overall his damage is fine, his most damaging moves are in Qi stance, it's also where his pressure is so having lower damage openers is a fair counter balance.
@@Mattman_90 You make a decent point about the rest of his damage via Qi Stance but I'm talking about boasting the damage from his heavies (starter) to 30 because of 3 main properties:
How did you get the Assassins creed hidden blade execution
It was part of an event either last year or the year before. Unfortunately it was limited time only.
Ah i see
I hate his laugh so much when he executes me
Honestly I'd like Shaolin if he just shut up. If his lines were more stoic and disciplined I'd love him. But he's a clown and a piss taker, thus annoying.
Now that's how to do an instructional vid.
Thank you. 🙂

Very fuckin shaolin I play kicks my ass idk why
Shaolin is a little easier to fight these days but his sheer number of options can make him a tough opponent. I'd suggest playing Shaolin yourself to get a feel for the character, see how players counter you.
I just bought shaolin and death point strike never works I connect with the first attack but it doesn’t combo
Go into training to practice the timing. You have to hit the next attack as the first strike lands. It can be delayed too which makes the timing trickier. It's very similar to PK's GB stabs or Shinobi’s sickle rain.
So it’s just better nobushi
