The little guy is also wickedly fun to fly! :-)

I work on a lot of R22 and 44s. They’re quite easy to work on other than that damned fan scroll🤬 those 7/32 nuts and the hex bolts on the right hand side are the bane of my existence.

@02:16 you state the R22 is a twin rotor design. The R22 is a single rotor design with a two-blade rotor. The CH47 is a twin rotor design. :-)

In my opinion, the R22 is the ideal trainer because the maximum pilot, passenger, and luggage payload of 389 pounds, with full standard fuel tank, makes it unsuitable for any serious long-distance transportation for two people. As the pilot and passenger weight increases, the only option is to reduce the fuel in the tank. The R22 has a maximum seat load of 240 pounds, so portly pilots like me can't fly it. This is the reason I did all of my PPL fixed wing training in the Cessna C172 instead of the C150 or C152. :-(

Weight is certainly a factor in these things ;) I defiantly think these have a place as a trainer (hard to argue when there are a lot them out there used for just that lol). It's place to me though is for someone trying to get a pilots license as cheap as possible (which certainly happens a lot) because this is always going to have the lowest cost per flight hour. However if safety is more important than cost, I think there are better trainers out there.

I agree, good personal helicopter, but not a good trainer. Also since it is easy to fly, it doesn't prepare you for helicopters that don't have a governor.

Yeah I trained on a schweizer 300cbi and the throttle made you more aware of power settings needed for different maneuvers

The Mosquito Air is less than $40,000 and their turbine version is around $50.000 I believe.

@@jointstrike2 So why does Robinson's website for the R22 and their P.O.H. list a max alt. of 14,000?

It's not a good trainer. You also need 10 extra hours to fly it by a special FAA regulation. Unless You learned on one. It is also prone to mast bumping.
