  • The Bell 47 first flew in 1945. The design would set in motion a series of events which would change aviation forever. They would first deploy to active duty in Korea in the 1950s as the H-13 and while used in many various roles, medical evacuation, or medevac, is where it would make the largest impact. Flying wounded from the battlefields to MASH units in just minutes lowered the battlefield death rate dramatically. After the war, the medevac helicopters would continue their duty back home in civilian life. Today we have twin-engine, jet-powered helicopters flying that same role, saving lives. The Bell 47 would be flown by many famous aviators through the years and even some of America’s astronauts. However the role which made it a cultural icon was the appearance in the movie and later television series, M.A.S.H. This very airframe was used during filming and is in the opening scenes of the show.

And I would do the opposite because I was a soldier just back from 2 tours in Vietnam with a Vietnamese wife. Though the show was ostensibly about the Korean War, it captured both the nation and Alan Alda’s disillusionment with the stalemate and human cost of the Vietnam War. I felt exactly like the guy who Wrote the book MASH, (who was an actual hero of the Korean War and made almost nothing off the series). He said he Didn't write an anti-war book. His son said, "My father was a political conservative and did not like the liberal tendencies that Alan Alda portrayed Hawkeye Pierce as having." Now a whole generation who didn't go or know got their impressions from an entertaining movie that wasn't true.

Vietnam is a poor country and it doesn't have to be. Like all Socialist Communist countries it wrecks havoc and human suffering on all it touches. That's what we were fighting for, to prevent the spread of Communism for democracy and freedom for all people, not just USA. This is why communism in China needs to be checked.

Now look up the statistics, average VN income per year is $2,000. It is a poor country poorly run.
Yes, it's great for Ex Pats. HMC has some of the highest real estate prices in the world, as rich Chinese buy up property. VN could be like South Korea, Japan, Singapore for the people. It's not. China manipulates and uses Vietnam, treats them like shit and has no respect for their culture. The locals hate it. Working as a Paramedic in Grants Pass , OR , our company had an arrangement with a local helicopter firm ( mostly logging support ) to collaboratively provide medevac services. Van Honeycutt was the prime pilot. His "claim to fame" was that he was one of the pilots for the M.A.S.H. movie. He had an autographed photo behind his desk , a snapshot of the lead-in frame of the two 47's , signed by most of the stars of the movie. One hell of a pilot (way to many stories to tell) , one hell of a fellow, one hell of an aircraft.

The Bell 47 held many helicopter flight records, although this might have been down to the fact there was not much competition around at the time. Interesting to note that this aircraft was flown from the left hand seat, whereas modern helicopters are flown from the right hand seat, mainly so that the pilot doesn’t have to let go of the cyclic control to operates controls on the centre console and instrument panel. The stabiliser bar is a well known Bell feature, but was designed by Arthur Middleton Young independently. He took his design to Bell and they employed him as a designer. the 47 was undoubtedly a great aircraft.

I'm pretty sure that Dennis Clarq used to own this helicopter. The story as I know it is that when he got out of Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic, he ended up buying three former military helicopters that did not have any paperwork. They would start up and run and do everything as they should, just no paperwork so he couldn't fly them. He had them at the old seaplane base on Irondequoit Bay in Rochester New York. He was a mechanic there. Some guys from California came out and bought them because they were planning on making a TV show based on the movie MASH. That money provided the down payment and the start-up cash for him to buy a 152 Acre Farm in cohocton New York. I'm assuming he still resides there. He later went on to buy a lot more Government auction helicopters and ended up with a Helicopter Museum. He never opened the museum to the public, but it was quite a sight to see. He ended up with the very first prototype Bell 47 there as well as 2 reciprocating powered Kaman helicopters, Bo 102 single bladed helicopter, first human powered helicopter from California Polytechnic and one of the prototypes to the Bell jet Ranger and the first Hughes 269. He ended up with over a hundred helicopters. He made his career selling parts. He was this kind of bigger than life character who is very humble and never realize you couldn't do something so he would try everything and he did some amazing things. Last time I was there he had a child Sikorsky you put on top of a truck axle and use it as a weather vane in the middle of a field. This is well as the other two helicopters played a crucial role and everything he did in his life. If you reach out to him tell him Jonathan Morgan said hi

Great Helicopter only the best, I watched the american TV series WIRLYBIRDS sometime during the 1950's. The BELL 47 was and still is my favourite aircraft ( Helicopter ) I think the helicopter is the most important aircraft ever made. It goes where others cant go and it is so versatile for rescue's. When i was very young in the 50's I liked drawing this this helicopter and I still draw it today for my grandchildren.
Thank you for sharing your video

We had some in my Army unit during Vietnam (1971) I believe they were phasing them out then . We were sending them back to the US and of course we were using the Bell Jet Ranger. Both excellent aircraft, actually I preferred the Jet Ranger to the Huey.

The Bell 47 is a legendary helicopter. I would love to fly one or even own one. I love everything historical and wish I could find a original. I know they do have lot versions but they don't feel the same. The originals were more handmade then the rebuilds

A great video thank you. I'm a helicopter pilot and have not had the opportunity to fly one of these. I went to the Bell facility a couple of years ago and they had one in their hangar, nicely restored. It was a work of art, just like this one.

I got the chance to fly in this at the USS Alabama as a young kid, ever since I’ve wanted to fly helicopters for the army. After making Eagle Scout and building up some leadership skills as a battalion co in jrotc I’m hoping to make the cut.

I as well grew up watching MASH and always dreamed of someday flying the iconic bird, so I did. Got my commercial helicopter license with Chinook Helicopters of Abbotsford British Columbia Canada where they have a fleet of 47s. If anyone out there has dreamt of flying one , give them a call and experience flying one over the beautiful snow capped mountains of British Columbia. Don't forget your go-pro.

as its a gem as i believe one is painted in a M*A*S*H* scheme owned by Kermit Weeks of Fantisy of flight is one of 4 helicopters he owns the 3 are Sikorsky S-55 H-19 chickasaw. as the 47 was used by police departments. in many areas, as the J model the Executive variant was the first bell 47 recorded to carry a US President. as the bell 47 is a light helicopter as the Hiller H-23. and the currently produced Robinson R22.
