An edition of Pure Michigan Trains
Up north, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Canadian National serves the local industries, chief among them Forestry, Papermaking and Mining. The L552, based out of Gladstone Yard, serves one of the largest single industries on the customer list, the Verso Paper Mill in Quinnesec, Michigan.
With the massive paper mill receiving and shipping a whole train each day, the L552 has impressive tonnage on a varied and interesting route, up the old CNW branch towards Iron Mountain.

The drone footage over the river around 10 minute mark is spectacular! And I like no annoying music, just train sounds and your informative, non-verbose commentary.

Nice. Brings back memories. My Dad was a pastor in Gladstone many years ago. I know he was called by the Gladstone Police Department to the rail yard because a railroad employee had been run over by a train. When my Dad go there, I believe the man was already dead. Dad stayed there for awhile for the railroad employees and emergency responders as it was quite horrific. Nice to find this site. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! It is unfortunate how many have died in train and engine service over the years - but thankfully the number is down to only a small handful annually. The march towards zero continues but as you're aware it is an inherently risky job!

I grew up seeing everything for real way back in the C&NW and Soo days before they went history
I caught L552 and chased him a bit recently actully.
Excellent production, many great shots! Something that would help the viewer would be to display a map periodically during the video. This would help keep track of the geography and would help connect the shots together.
I've done it on a few videos and since I have the general annotated map linked in the description, I didn't think it was necessary as I was crunched for time in getting this one out with everything else I had going on. However many future installments on this channel will have maps, and I have done some in the past, as well.

I got unlucky the day I caught this. The two locomotives leading it were SD60s.
They are SD60s always now. I don’t think there’s been any other power since 2 January’s ago.

Great video! The area of the papermill is very impressive. What was the problem with CN # 8858?
The 8858 was offline because it was unnecessary for the first parts of the run. The crew will bring it online when and if they need it. In this case they figured they could make the hill with just the single unit, and so they did. They later brought it online for the tougher hill at Norway. Not an uncommon practice on this line. If they had stalled, the simple solution would be to cycle the brakes, bring the other unit online, and restart the movement.

You usually see a hopper car right after the Engines but not in this case as they were pulling tanker cars?
I think you're referring to the buffer car rule, which states that there should be cars of non-hazmat contents (or empty) placed between occupied engines/cabooses and hazmat cars. This is typically seen with crude oil, propane, and other chemicals. In this case however, no such car was required between the white tanks and the power because the tanks contain only limestone slurry, which is not a hazardous material. It's pretty much just mud.
This train services the Quinnesec Mill? My grandpa works there.

I can confirm that while there were no marshmallows roasted during the creation of this video, it is not out of the question that some crew had that opportunity at some point!

Nice footage - but again, slow down your narration and pay closer attention to your sentence structure. You exhibit several run on sentences. If i may offer a nickels worth of free advice . . . take some time to watch, and listen carefully, to the Pentrex production videos narrated by Dave Drui. In my opinion, the narration of their videos is the best in the business and set the standard for railroad video production. Overall nice job kid!

Nice work ! I agree with Bob on some tips to polish your narration which is very informative! My snip of advice( I used to work in sound) is to reduce the volume of the trains while you're talking, so we can hear you a bit easier. This takes a little more time but makes for a professional finish..other than that, a first rate video, keep up the good work.

Thanks guys for your remarks. It's really appreciated to get this kind of feedback - it's really rare to get much more than "I don't like your voice" and other stuff of that nature. I do like the Pentrex formula, and do try to emulate it mixed in with my own flair. Unfortunately I'm not exactly blessed with a great voice like Mike Rowe or something, but I will take your suggestions with me when it's time to record my next video's narration. I rarely have anybody even look at my scripts except for those I'm consulting on certain works. However I might just do that more often. I'll be honest, I think I have gotten to the point where it is time to work on my narration, now that the other elements are up to a higher standard. Always a game of improvement, and I'm glad to have your feedback, positive and negative. Thanks Fishplate and Mr Peterson!
