#WillSmith #WildWildWest #WTFHappenedToThisMovie
I love this movie. Nothing makes any sense, the comedy has aged poorly, and the entire thing feels like a bad joke. It's amazing.
I always viewed it as a Men in Black knockoff
It's so cheesy and crap that it's almost like watching one of those "movie" movies and as a result it's actually kind of funny, but for all the wrong reasons.
The comedy was bad at the time, so I don't think it's accurate to say that it aged poorly. But the fact that some studio spent millions of dollars, only to have a movie like Wild Wild West to show for it, will always be funny.
It's supposed to be like the wild west shows. Have you been to arizona or Disneyland? They do it all the time 💯
Sorry, but for me it doesn't even have "so bad it's good" going for it. It's just really, really bad (apart from the awesome, steampunk, giant mechanical spider, which deserved to be in a better film.)
"...but then all of a sudden... like, a giant fucking spider shows up!" - Kevin Smith
“And I’m thinking… good lord this is a piece of shit.”
Someone managed to get me into one of those college appearances. The Superman story and the Prince story are forever etched into my mind.
Ah, a man of culture.
Kevin Smith is a known liar though.
"Breath of fresh ass" is, to this day, one of my favorite movie lines ever.
The wild Wild West is the cinematic equivalent of when you used to mix all the flavors at the soda machine into one cup.
Always have been
that was called a Suicide where I grew up. walk up to the fast food person.. and say can I get a large suicide, and they knew what ya meant :p
This is literally what I do every time I go to the cinema, no wonder I love this movie
@@Mak10z - Ditto! Though we used to also do that with Slush Puppies and Slurpees. I'd do half a cup of Slush Puppy slush and two shots of every flavor. No wonder I'm a diabetic now.
It’s called swamp water ! In these here parts!
Oh gawd now the wild Wild West song is stuck in my head again after so many years.
Hell yeah and Sisqo’s tiny self singing the chorus. Wiggy wiggy scratch yo yo bang bang
I don't care what anyone says. That song is awesome.
Awwww...........HELL NAH!
@@alienboy1322 It should be, it sampled Kool Moe Dee's classic.
Tooo
The Wild Wild West
The two best things about this film are Selma Hayek and Eric cartman singing "wild , wild west" on south park.
To be fair the two best things are attached to Selma Hayek.
Salma* (she’s Mexican. Maybe you were thinking of Selma Blair?)
@@gregbors8364 Or perhaps it's just a spelling mistake?
@@Zerofightervi yeah, probably…. I didn’t express that very clearly… maybe the OP was thinking of the name “Selma,” as in “Selma Blair,” since “Salma” isn’t an English name, and not Selma Blair herself. Those two actresses really don’t resemble each other
@@Zerofightervi you beat me to thar comment 🤣
Loved this as a kid, it’s awful but always gonna have that place in my heart.
A guilty pleasure
Genuinely the most entertaining dumpster fire ever produced
When I first saw it at age nine, when it released, I loved it. I watched it a few years ago and boy oh boy, nostalgia should stay in the past.
Plus that song was fire, got the sunglasses from burger king too, yeah formative years and stuff
@@liamsworld3260 Got the spider from burger king lol
I don’t care what anyone says I love this movie. I saw it in theaters. No regrets.
"It was actually Barry Sonnenfel who ultimately approved the massive, motorized arachnid, although he admitted it was one of the factors that ruined the film." Okay, I'm going to take an unpopular opinion here, the spider didn't ruin the film. Honestly, the spider was one of the better parts of the movie (except that they gave away the mystery of its existence in TV advertisements, trailers, interviews, and behind-the-scenes documentaries). This movie had a lot more going against it that ultimately derailed its quality. The spider may be a good punchline because of Jon Peters, but it really wasn't the issue. So many other things were the issue.
I still love the story that the spider was going to be in Superman Lives! With Brainiac as the head of the spider. When they canceled Superman Lives, he decided to move it over to Wild Wild West.
The spider is the most memorable thing about it.
The spider is definitely not what ruins the movie. It's the bad writing and cringe jokes.
The spider, Salma Hayeks tits and Will Smith are the only three things I remember about this movie having not seen it in 15+ years.
@@WayStedYou don‘t forget Bai Ling‘s ass. 😏🔥
Idc what anyone says I always enjoy watching this movie.. btw that mechanical spider at the end is a technical marvel and still holds up today
Here, here! I really enjoyed this movie. I still love watching it.
I genuinely love this movie. I think you can still enjoy a movie even if it isn't "good" by most standards. It's a classic from my childhood that I like to revisit every now and then.
Nah it’s trash I agree you can enjoy a movie even if it’s not “good”
Actually, Will Smith himself has addressed passing on The Matrix on his vlog. It had nothing to do with "wanting to step away from scifi", he said he legit didn't understand the script at all, thought the Wachowskis were a little crazy, and that the bullet time premise didn't make any sense.
Tbf, the Wachowskis *are* a little crazy, but it's a bit weird for Will Smith (and his nutjob family) to judge anyone for that.
@@AeneasGemini DAMN lol. That’s facts.
The Matrix bores me, I just can't get myself into something that is so far fetched. It requires to much suspension of common sense to and belief to buy into it. I know a lot of people love it, but its not for me.
Bullet time wasn't the premise in the Matrix, it was just a special effect. lol
The premise is they're in the Matrix, a simulation created by AI.
@@ppumpkin3282 Sounds like you overthink movies a bit?
I saw this in the theater and South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut on the same day. This movie makes me laugh at points, I know it’s not great but there are definitely moments.
It is great
Nah it's shit lol still liked the burger king spider toy 😂
There were so many fun and funny movies that summer. Wild Wild West was not one of them. I had so much fun and laughed my ass off with my friends watching South Park in the theatre.
True, it wasn’t horrible, (well it was at points)! Certainly not a good or great movie! Will Smith just played himself, as usual, no real acting there. The spider was not the killer of this film, just a stupid plot and writing.
She’s a breath of fresh ass…
What?
What?
You said “ass”.
No I didn’t, I said she was a breast of fresh air.
Made me laugh. Sue me.
I think the effects aged pretty well
I was just thinking the same
That's maybe of the few good things about the movie.
So did Salma Hayek
Some nice effects and props but a total confusion in aggregate that may have single handedly killed off the Steampunk aesthetic.
"Now that's... a whupin'."
Still use this classic quote to this day
Boy, we may not a woodpile on deck, but you're gonna get a whooping anyway!
@@whiteironmg Well... that struck a nerve.
When Tom Cruz rebooted the Mission Impossible series from the 60's he brought it to current and amped up the action. If they had done the same thing with Wild Wild West they could have really turned this into a multi episode block buster series. But instead they turned it into a farce of the original show, what a shame.
It's called Wild Wild West, as in, the Wild West. Not sure they could have brought it into current day. Old West/Steam punk could work if done right. They just had an idiot producer and star with too big of an ego in the way. It just didn't work.
@@ChaseSchleich Dude, he obviously means bring it up to modern filmmaking standards. Compare this hokey nonsense to the other westerns being made around the same time.
I so loved the original show, was so excited when I heard they were making a movie....and I'm positive I'll never be so disappointed by a movie again.
Wild Wild West is entertaining. Never understood the hate behind it.
I'll never forget the disturbing spider-leg paraplegic villain and the beheading contraption. EXTREMELY creative.
I'm not gonna lie, I actually liked this movie!
This answers a lot of questions, except for WHY he was so obsessed with the inclusion of a giant spider. That's so random and bizarre. It's like the movie started with a giant spider and worked backwards from there.
Check out Kevin Smith's story on that subject
Peters was notorious with being obsessed with some 'creative' idea until he got his way.
The funniest thing to me is that, apparently after years of trying to include his giant mechanical spider into one film after another, all inappropriate, he finally was producing WWW, the one movie where a giant mechanical spider fits PERFECTLY with the source material... and then didn't want it!
@@Cristobolon The short answer is that Peters thought spiders were nature's perfect killing machines or something. Like he saw a Discovery Channel documentary and it stuck with him for years.
@@suedenim I'm surprised he wasn't involved on Eight Legged Freaks' production. That movie screamed "HI JON PETERS!!!!" from beginning until the end.
I must say the dynamic between Smith and Kline was one of the redeeming qualities. They ignored the formula rules that one guy must be over the top silly at all times and the other guy is always the straight man. Rather passing it back and forth in different ways trying to one up each other, which was fitting canonically with the characters.
I remember seeing this in theatres when I was 10 and still to this day I consider it one of my favorites. I think like many films like this when I was young, I saw it in rose colored glasses and never really saw the flaws it has, but I still hold it as a guilty pleasure/childhood favorite. Honestly, the jokes and one liners are ones I still quite with my friends who also share a love for this movie.
“who will remain nameless: JIIIIIIIIM WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEST!!!!!”
Also, this was my first Kenneth Branagh film, which I find kind of hilarious once I found out he was a prominent Shakespearean actor 😆
I don’t know why this movie is hated so much, I think it’s fun
We snuck into this movie when it came out, and despite getting in free, I still feel ripped off to this day.
Another guilty pleasure of mine. I always thought Will Smith and Kevin Kline's characters butting heads with each other was funny. And the actor playing Loveless always looked like he was having a lot of fun playing the villain.
This film is my guilty pleasure, whenever it's on I always catch it.
yup same.. it is empty calories, eye candy.. will watch it , no matter what part of the movie i catch it in..
this and league of extraordinary gentlemen are my if l have had a shit week l will put them on with a big bowl of pop corn and laugh my arse off
I’m a massive sucker for all things steampunk, so I definitely have a soft spot for this film.
Do you like the '60's TV Show? That one is so good. The Gadgets are very useful.
I had this on VHS…I loved it…especially the scene where you see Salma Hayek’s cheeks…8 year old me was in Heaven!
Highlight of the movie. Today, including a scene like this in a lighthearted kids movie would have everyone calling for the cancellation of the entire cast and crew
That was heaven hell yea
I preferred Loveless's squad of culturally diverse corset-wearing femme females.
"I have them square in my sights, sire."
_"As do I Munitia, as do I."_
One of the most painful cinematic experiences of my life. WHY WILL WHY???
It's weird that Smith was so successful in the 90s and yet made huge mistakes in not taking certain roles which has led to him having barely a single blockbuster post 2000.
Um Men in Black 2, Pursuit of Happyness, Ali, I,Robot...
I loved the show, it was steampunk before anyone even knew steampunk was a thing -- and seeking out that sensibility would have helped a lot. I find the spider to actually be rather neutral and distracting -- it was not that I minded so much as the terrible writing. The original characters got ditched altogether -- Robert Conrad had a decent "cool -- for a square" vibe and Artemus Gordon was primarily a master of disguise, not a Q to West's Bond. Lusting after yet another Will Smith 4th of July completely overlooked the obvious fact that Smith's signature cockiness had zero to do with James West. The Addams Family worked because it embraced the "spooky is cool" vibe even better than the show could. When you ditch the essence of what you are allegedly paying homage to, you're asking for trouble.
Yeah no...steampunk dates all the way back to the 80s and even earlier. There's 20000 leagues under the sea with Kurt Douglas, the first half of Miyazaki's career, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and tons of 50s and 60s scifi that have steam punk in it. Heck you can even call 1902's a trip to the Moon the first steampunk. Lile everything in this movie its just a copy of earlier and better movies.
But if you like it thats cool. I like watching it once in a while cause I still think its kinda funny.
This movie is not bad. I rewatch it all the time. Everyone's performance is brilliant.
We had like 5 movies growing up. This was one of them. And my siblings would watch it over, and over. And over.
This movie ticks all the boxes for a genuine Western with Sci-Fi trimmings. I grew up on it, and it influenced many of my interests. It's funny Red Dead Redemption with a dash of Undead Nightmare.
This is one one of the 'so bad it's good' movies. Mind, I haven't watched it in years at this point, but I remember it being fun enough, in an absurd sort of way.
I call it very bad funny type of movie, except all the actors were great.
They were on point with that soundtrack, but for me, I think this film is primarily hitting the nostalgia button. After all, it came out just as I was finishing middle school...
I saw this in theater opening day. Before we left for the theater, Will was doing an interview and the reporter asked him how he felt about the movie.
Will was... apprehensive. I tried to tell my parents but they didn't listen. They later regretted it.
I actually love this movie in spite of its flaws, mostly because I'm a sucker for gadgets and was born too late to see the original show. And as long as you watch it expecting a silly romp, it's a lot of fun. Critics tend to ruin things by going in with expectations.
To me the main problem of this movie was that it didn't really seem to focus on anything and therefore it became a mess.
The steampunk setting in the Wild West might have worked had it been used more persistently, but the movie basically flipped between being at times a pure western, at times pure steampunk and rarely a blend of the two. On top of that the main characters didn't seem to have much chemistry nor consistency, which is always a bad thing for a movie and it made the jokes fall flat.
It's a shame, as the movie has some interesting scenes and themes that might have worked had they been worked out and integrated better.
I saw this in theaters. What a memorable time thinking it wasn't that bad on the way home....? The next morning... uhh yea pretty awful
I saw it on video cassette. And I laughed my ass of because it was too bad funny. Listening to the end songs with the art in the background made it so good. I thought all the actors were great for this bad movie.
This was the movie that killed Will Smith stronghold on the 4th July weekend (which he staked a claim since Independence Day). The tie in Will Smith title pop video cost more than the movie. Basically it was a total mess, Smith actually turned down The Matrix for this.
Thankfully he did. We wouldn't have the Matrix as we know it!
What I remember most about this film (other than its earbug tie-in song by Will Smith that got crazy amounts of airplay) was getting a pair of Wild Wild West sunglasses from Burger King. They were actually kind of cool looking and I kept them in the passenger armrest for anyone riding shotgun in my 1992 Toyota Camry.
Was far better then it had any right to be. Still has a place on my shelf though. Guilty pleasure
The big spider from Kevin smith comes to mind
I love this movie. Especially the villain... he has the best lines!
7:54 That scene is a fever dream in a half, especially when his tassels start to spin and shoot fire! 😅😅💙🤣😽
Before watching this video: the problem was that it was made.
After watching the video: same.
And, Branaugh's accent was acceptable. He should be more embarrassed that he was in the movie. Also, Kline is better than that.
(For the record, I was a big fan of the original show. Conrad and Martin worked very well together.)
The problem was that it was made
The Disney Remakes: OK
Agreed. Smith is no Conrad, plus Martin's humor was spot on.
Branaugh should be more embarrassed by that horrible “man-scaped” beard and mustache!
The original Wild Wild West WAS a cool fantasy show that crossed the cowboy genre with the (at the time), very popular James Bond movies with all the gadgets and over the top villains! Will, tried, but it just didn’t go over. The supposed “government technology” was too damn unbelievable, even if it was set in the current day!! They REALLY lost me when they took the decapitated head and turned it into a projector to see what was the last thing he saw. I called Instant BS, and could not support another detail of this movie after that!!!
I love the steampunk genre
It is so unique and so underused

you might enjoy the 1st season and a half of the original show, so take a look. another steampunk show i enjoyed was the short-lived "Legend" starring Richard Dean Anderson and John de Lancie. And don't forget "The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr." either.
Really like this movie. It is silly entertainment and nothing beyond that.
Over 20 years later and I still forget Selma Hayek is even in this movie everytime I watch it, I don't think this movie is that bad!
There are 2 good thing about this film: Bai Ling and Salma Hayek
Neither of those are good
I disagree but fair enough. I wish they hadn’t killed off Bai Lings character. What a waste
@@chasehedges6775 I loved her in The Crow, she was deliciously creepy.
My older sister refused to take me to watch this at the cinema. When I finally got to watch it at 9 year old and I loved it and still do. Cool gadgets and characters for a kid.
Watching money burn on screen is exactly how I would describe this atrocity of film. There was a couple Dad jokes that were funny
Will Smith was so modest he called 1999/2000 the Willenium.
Loveless was such a great villain.
I still have that theme song stuck in my head
Kevin Smith wasn't lying. Jon Peters is indeed well coifed.
Lol
Wild Wild West certainly was not a bad movie in the sense we have bad movies today. It is a wild ride that doesn't make too much sense, but at its heart it is a film that is watchable.
The only good things about this film are Will Smith’s stylish costumes, and Salma Hayek’s heaving bosom.
Oh man, I had forgotten all about Will Smith in drag and you brought it back
I don't what everyone is talking about, I loved every second of this movie, especially when I grew up and understanding the dirty jokes. I will admit the cross dressing threw me off at first but again when I grew up I understand it.
I mean...it's objectively bad, but you do you.

It was nothing like the series that Robert Conrad starred in!
Flaws aside the kid in me always loved the giant robot spider.
I still dig it. Don't judge me.
The fact that a guy like peters was able to make millions from his "suggestions" proves how twisted Hollywood was and is
I remember seeing Wild Wild West when I was 11 years old and liking it, I watched it again when I was 20 and was like…Meh. Not the worst movie ever made but definitely an expensively bland one.
Yes, it is bad, but not on the level of _Batman & Robin_ or _Battlefield Earth._
I just about spit out my drink when you quoted Sonnenfeld saying the steampunk spider ruined the film. Brother, what?! You don't SEE anything like that in any other movies!!! It's by far and away the best part!
I'm so stoked for Bradley Cooper's portrayal of crazy-ass Jon Peters! :D
This movie got heavy rotations on T.V. stations TNT & TBS.
How did this happen two words: Jon Peters
i was in the 4th grade when this movie came out and loved it so much, If i remember correctly it was kind of advertised more so as a kids movie, but adults went to see it and hated it
Loved this film as a kid.
I still find it memorable, mainly due to its steampunk setting and ideas.
"Wheeeelll I'll be a monkeys uncle, how did we arrive in this daaark situation" I'll never stop quoting that in my best Loveless voice
"Almost" worth watching again...
Had me sold with the Soundtrack though!
One of my favorite childhood films.
I saw this a few years ago, I had only ever seen a trailer for it back in the day. And honestly, I sort of felt nostalgic for it even though as I said this was my first time watching it. It really did feel like the sort of Movie I would have watched in the 90s, and I have to admit that I actually liked that. Admittedly once the Movie got to the part where they have those metal discs around their necks, I started to loose internet, once the spider showed up I lost all interest.
I always thought this movie was a classic. It put will smith on the map. It’s got everything, adventure, action, mystery, romance, animatronics.
Thank god Wil Smith wasn;t in the Matrix, After hearing how he uses his star power to get script rewrites imagine what a trash fire he could have turned that movie into? Mr Reeves on the other hand is a humbleman who through his dedication to fullfilling a role makes him one of the greatest action movie stars ever. Still.
I never thought of that. But I agree the Mr. Reeves was the best for The Matrix. But I thought all the actors in this movie were great.
his name is keanu
That thumbnail got my attention. Well played.
Though I haven't seen it in a while, I actually liked this movie it's silly, fun and unique with the steam punk elements and I find Batman & Robin and Battlefield Earth unwatchable.
I haven't seen it since I was a teenager but I recall enjoying it at the time.
So glad will smith turned down the matrix neo role. Cant even imagine him playing neo because Keanu Reeves owned that role.
Man, that thumbnail catches my eye everytime I scroll by it. Love me some Salma Hayek! 😍
I always loveedddd Wild Wild West growing up. Only to find out like 20 years later it go horrible reviews. To this day, I don’t understand why. It’s fun, free entertainment. It didn’t change my life, but was worth multiple watches IMO. 🤷🏼♂️

Enjoyed this when it came out. As did everyone else I know. ...Never knew it supposedly sucked until just recently. ??
This is actually one of my favourite films. I find it a lot of fun and I like it more than most popular films, e.g. the Matrix, the John Wick series, the Fast & Furious series, the Bad Boys series, most crime & cop films, any John Wayne films, any Elvis films, etc..
In an alternate timeline, Will Smith is Neo?
They did one of those Deep Fakes putting Will in to the Matrix, worth a look if you haven't seen it :)
would have been awful
The best thing to come out of this movie is Neil Ciciregia's use of Will Smith's Wild Wild West song in "Wow Wow"
I love this movie.
South Park would later parody the movie with Cartman as Jim West and Clyde Frog as Artemis.
The one thing everyone remembers is the spider. As bad as it was in the moment, it was something that made that film memorable now. If not it would have been forgotten.
Too me it's entertaining, has some funny bits, & doesn't take itself seriously
Yeah people take it too seriously but I think it's because they wasted so much money on it
