I have one of these amps that I bought new in 93. Had it for 15 years playing on small stages as well as large ones.
Played stratocasters and telecasters through her and she always sounded great. Only thing that I changed was her input jack.
She was abit hard to contain at times volume wise on smaller stages, but all in all a good amp.
    Played country rock and blues.
Plugged into #2. Never used the drive channel.
For overdriven things I used a first gen TS9.
Got alot of compliments through years from the main acts guitar players we opened for regarding the tone I got especially with a tele.
    Enjoy your videos Landon!
    Best regards from northern Michigan!

Good review, but you missed a couple of key points on the amp. I have owned a reissue for about 6 years now and love it, I also added the additional 12" speaker matching tweed cab - so it gives you a mini stack of sorts, save you using an amp stand.
The Effect loops section is where you missed some juicy details...most amps call it send and return but you will notice fender calls it Preamp In and Preamp Out...so why the confusion? Because this serves a multi purpose outside of the effects loop usage....
    *Preamp Out*
If you plug a cable in the Preamp Out (nothing in Preamp In) then you can get a direct signal to record from the preamp section of the amp, then you can add whatever cabinet, re eq and do whatever with you recording software, interface etc...
    *Power amp In*
If you put a cable in the Power amp In (nothing in the Preamp Out) now your amp will serve as a power engine for whatever pre-amp you want to stick in it. Could be that sweet tone 12w amp you have but can't play with a band, so you take the out on it into the Preamp In and presto you have the tone stack (preamp section) of the 12w amp now using the 40w power section of the reissue and its 12" speaker. Or you could use your Vox Tonelab, Amp pedals, Line 6, Boss GT etc...as your tone stack powered with a 40w power section and bypassing the Blues Deluxe Reissue's tone stack and having little to no colorization to your device you are inserting.
    *Input Jacks*
Also your inputs 1 and 2 have a function also, 1 is normal and 2(by itself) is -3db..so why? Well say you gig with a single coil and humbucker guitar, well instead of messing with your volume you can plug the humbucker in 2 and the singles in 1...this will offset the louder output of the humbuckers against your volume settings on the amp, and then by clicking the bright switch will lesson your eq changing also but brightening up the darker humbuckers.*If you plug two guitars in at once the -3db on the 2nd input is eliminated and 1 & 2 are equal. *
Good review! Great amp! Also the Clean channel's tone stack is more "thick" in sound, more mids and lows whereas the Drive channel has less mids and lows, I think fender did this to compensate to help you cut through the mix and also gain adds more mids and lows and it can get muddy fast with more drive added.
P.S. I don't put any effects thru the loop, some peeps like using modulation between preamp and power section, but I find this amp takes it great straight in the front....handles pedals so good!

@Trevor Denault That's very interesting. Where did you find all this information? (also, just a note: I think you confused "power amp in" with "preamp in")

    • @crunchyflower
      @crunchyflower Pƙed 3 lety +1

@@51MontyPython Hey Monty, yes I did write that wrong, have since corrected, thanks! The manual states under the PREAMP OUT / POWER AMP IN section
      (1) Effects Loop - Connect PREAMP OUT to your effects input, and POWER AMP IN to the effects output.
      (2) Multiple Amps - Connect PREAMP OUT on the primary unit to POWER AMP IN on the auxiliary unit. The primary unit is used to control the auxiliary unit, except for Reverb and Presence which remain active on each unit.
      (3) Recording or Reinforcement - Connect PREAMP OUT to the input of sound equipment. Use shielded instrument cables with PREAMP OUT and POWER AMP IN. Both jacks are located before Reverb and Presence in the signal path.
So from that you can see all the options I listed in my original reply, plus I have owned the amp for almost a decade now and have experimented quite a bit with it and tested all the variables to test out various tones etc.
I will tell you that in the beginning I was going to change the speaker, 8-10 years back that was the "big upgrade" to this amp, but that said, two things changed my mind.
      1. Was the addition of the extension cabinet, it gave the amp a different dimension. I am always about 2 or more speakers, 2x12, 2x10, 4x10 - all which I have, so the 2x12 was a must and Fender did something different with the extension cab, they made it a closed back with a celestion in it. While the amp itself came with Eminence Fender special design. So two voices that blend oh so well, the ext cab is quick dark and mid/bass heavy compared to the sharper cut speaker in the amp, so they blend oh so well.
      And
      2. I let the speak get broken in. Years later on the forums where all the guys were swapping out their speakers a ton of them went back to the original after 1, 2 or more swaps and found that once it broken in it was best suited for the amp. My theory was Fender put the best fitting speaker for the price point to keep the amp at its price range and it was well suited for the amp, the Deluxe series of Hot Rod and Blues deluxe amp is the standard as backline on concert stages and everywhere round the world, they did something right.

I own and play a Blues Deluxe and I concur with Landon that this is not an ideal amp for metal. I can get some pretty heavy tones out of it, though, running a distortion pedal into the clean channel. It's a pretty bright amp overall so I find that I'm having to pull the treble back pretty heavily on both the amp and on the distortion pedal tone setting if I'm using a pedal. This amp benefits IMMENSELY from a speaker upgrade. I swapped in a brand new Eminence Texas Heat 150w speaker for just under $100 and it made a world of difference. The low end was really muddy and flabby with the stock speaker. The Texas Heat really tightened up the low end and gave it a much greater presence in the overall tone. It also dialed back some of the excessive treble without losing any of the beautiful shimmer of this amp. If you already own this amp and still have the stock speaker, definitely upgrade it. You will be amazed at how much better it sounds.

The amp is used simply as a clean amp and my real style of sound comes from the Digitech 2120 Artist. This is a hellaciously loud amp, very versatile as it sounds good just playing through the amp, but fully customizable with your pedals/effects. You could do metal, is what I'm trying to say. :-)

I'm trying to decide between this amp used or a new tweed version of the bassbreaker 30R. I think I'm leaning towards the bassbreaker, it seems to do everything that the this amp does and more. But. . . reissue amps are dead simple to work on and service, the BB range, not so much.

I was thinking about getting this amp, but, I'm not gigging with it, so, I was concerned about it being too loud (for home use) in order to get a decent tone (not that I mind cranking it up nice and loud, but, within reason. Note: I _don't_ live in an apartment, for what it's worth), but figured I could just turn up the preamp volume so I could still drive the preamp tubes, and just use the Master Volume to attenuate the actual volume coming out of the amp. But you're saying I can't do that, at least on the clean channel, because the Master only controls the drive channel?

By the way if you have this amp check the reverb tank as some were shipped with the RCA phonos (Red and White) the wrong way round as the tank was labelled in reverse. Just swap the leads around if the reverb sounds cruddy and it should work properly. Great demo , thanks.

I gave up on the reverb Took it to a tech and he told me the amp came with the wrong foot switch and burned some thing which he said he fixed and I still can't hear the reverb. The Tech also said that some one had already worked on it and did a mess, I bought it from MF new so they sold me a bad one . I never heard the reverb but was unable to send it back at the time due to illness I was having. I told MF aboit it later and they didn't say they would fix it months later so Don;t buy it from them. Also had issues with a spider amp that has no real instructions on how to use it . They at MF sell lots of junk that people sent back and they resell it so watch your selves.

That seems to be an issue with the amp. I took it to three technicians and they all said nothing was wrong, so out of frustration I pulled the tank and inspected the springs and they all seemed OK until I touched them with a chop stick and as it turned out the wire which was very small leading into the side of the tank was loose but not noticeably loose. I pressed it in more and the issue was solved. Many others I have spoken to had the same issue. Quality control, ugh!
