    Even with the pole pieces at the same height, humbucker covers (at least those made out of metal) still alter the sound because it acts as a shield, and warm up the edges a bit. Some people love that sound better.. some people feel like it destroys the purity of the signal.. and some just don't care and will consider the look first.

    Beautiful playing as always Jon. You were ROCKIN' that Duesenberg! And yes, I've come to the same conclusion as you over the years about pickup covers.

    Thanks Jon. This (the part about the flying drinks) explains a bit about my Ibanez S-series standard... I managed to find one very inexpensively priced, and when it arrived it looked like it had been drenched in some sugary drink! (And that someone had done an amateurish fret levelling without a re-crown!) The clean up took a little while but it's (almost) fine now with the electronics replaced. The frets will need a proper pro job in the future. I just love how unpretentious that guitar is. If only it could tell its story!

    Great rockin' intro Jon, and very informative discussion! I'm all in for pickup covers, as you say, 'they look good, and provide good protection'. If they do tend to roll off a bit of the high end then that's a bonus for me anyway.

    Thanks for that John, informative as I’ve got several guitars with all styles of Hum buckers, I’ve often wondered about the cover itself and being able to adjust the pole piece with the cover on it. Now I know many thanks

    Since a kid guy's were always taking the covers off humbuckers on their Les Paul's
    for more gain / sustain reasons.
    Pedals efx and built in presence gain features today negates that so it's a personal preference players field.
    Nice PRS picked-up a Custom 24 Floyd a year ago I'm still astonished at the
    Build quality comfort ease - bang for your buck win!
    Best !👍

    What a wonderful playing Jon, with or without covers you make those guitars sound at their best! It’s so good that you mentioned this topic because I always wanted to hear an opinion from an experienced musician. I remember an interview with Seymour Duncan or Paul Reed Smith where one of them favour no-covers. I have two guitars without covers, one is bright and the other mellow, same happens with my guitars with covers. At the end, your comments are spot on, the poles and pick-up height affects the sound and that should be part of the setup.

    The one thing that puts my teeth on edge are bright harsh sounding pickups, plus open poles are prone to damage
    and debri, and just look bad.
    Thankfully the covers solve most of this unless the pickups are just bad ones, adjusting the poles will compensate
    for the damping effect caused by the covers.
    I always fit covers to any open pole humbuckers and some black or chrome surrounds, the white or cream ones
    are not for me.
    Each to their own, but for me covers are a must.
    I hope you are now happy with yours Jonathan🙂

    It depends of pickup. If pickup is very bright cover can remove highs a little. In the end it's just matter of taste if player is using high quality covers, but of course there is still little effect. Cheap covers usually kills highs too much.

    • @JonIsJustTooLoud
      @JonIsJustTooLoud  Před 2 lety +1

      What do you think about what I said about the height of the pole pieces?✌️❤️

    • @kuitaristi3003
      @kuitaristi3003 Před 2 lety

      @@JonIsJustTooLoud I think same way. When you raise pole pieces then you get more highs. Great way to get muddy neck pickup to sound better is lower the pickup and raise poles. I think pickup that use cover sounds little softer because that cover covers those non adjustable pickup pole pieces. Like strat usually has cover on pickups too but sounds very bright because pole pieces are visible.

    For me, sound wise, I really don't "pickup" a big difference in tone. But I do prefer them for the aesthetic and protection.

  • @beginner_electric_guitar

    From one pickup to another it is hard to tell. From a physics perspective I think the covers serve to spread the magnetic field a little bit more, you're ears judge the rest. Most covers are magnetic anyway I believe.
