    I think the german Version of WML is a bit stiffer than this original one. I loved this show as a kid but thanks to youtube and ofcourse to Gary for the posibility to see the original.
    Yes it's true in Germany the MG wasn't allowed to talk at all. The moderator speakes for them and the panel get the information of the sex in advance. But if I think of all the fun when MG's tries to hide their voices.... we missed a lot in this shows.
    btw I think Maria Schell was a MG in Germany to.
    Besides the alternations in the MG section there are other alternations in the hole game, the panel was'nt allowed to speak to each other really, not even a call for a conference was a possibility, and the moderator was very strict about it.
    It was a rather distinguished sort of game but it had equal amount of funny speaking like " I'm right in assuming that.... or that not... something like that to produce more "yes" answers. Some of them are still generally known by many people of my generation.

    Having watched 50-100 of these in the last few months, I can safely say that the question "is there a product connected with what you do?" is almost always misleading and has great potential to lead the panel in the wrong direction. I find on the times they do, they often get too focused on irrelevant details like "can a woman use it as much as a man?" when it's not that kind of thing or service at all...
    I love this show, but sometimes feel John Daly misleads the panel a little... they're often very, very, very good at what they do and I've found they get the line more often than not (especially with the BC, DK, and AF trio)...
    ...however it seems that when they're spot on, they're SUPERB, but when they're not, they really get off track.
    I give a few examples like the episode before this one (chronologically, via the playlist) about the woman who dived with the horse, she seemed ready to say "no" to a lot of questions I'd think would be a "yes".... same with the guy who was a termite exterminator a few episodes back, early question was "is there a product related to your line?" and John Daly was quick to say "yes". Oh? Really? What product would that be, exactly.... termites?? I mean, I can see a service being related, but product? Close I can figure would be the TERMITE SPRAY maybe.... but anyway, it pretty much made the panel go off on the wrong track the whole time, figuring the guy was more about selling something than providing a service.
    Yet another example is this episode's "Tracks missles" again, the product connection question comes up, which I never see as a good thing the majority of the time. :p Sometimes it works, but more often than not it just seems to throw a gear in the guessing.
    Sometimes I wish this show had a "yes", "no" and "irrelevant", because oftentimes the panel will get hung up on something that isn't relevant at all, like the one with the assistant to the Duchess of Windsor a few episodes ago. "Could I benefit from your services?" "Could both guys and girls use you?" "Could kids use you?" All technically "yes"', but just seemingly more importance is placed on them than there should be... sometimes it's frustrating because I wish John would divert more irrelevant lines of questioning to get them focused back on what is or is not important.
    Of course, that's all part of the game, and oftentimes part of the fun. Obviously John wants the contestants to win and make money, but also, I think that laughs and entertainment are played more for the purpose than the actual game or guessing is. John sometimes seems to get bored easily and some episodes he seems to reach this point easier/faster...and when that happens and he gives his infamous "I'll give you all just one more minute:" line, I usually they're doomed by then. :p
    In any case, aside from this novel of a comment, I love this show, love the regular panel, love most the guests and it's truly a treasure. A treasure that can still be (entertainingly) frustrating sometimes. :p

    What is up with John Daly being snide with Dorothy. It seems he does not like her or is mad at her. He just seems to be very short with her.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  Před 10 lety +20

      I hadn't noticed the snideness you're referring to, but there was bad blood between John and Dorothy by this point. She had written a column revealing some backstage gossip and John never forgave her for it (according to Bennett Cerf in an interview). I always thought they did a wonderful job of covering up the iciness between them, but you seem to have caught on to it without even knowing the story-- so I guess maybe not!

      What's My Line?
      I found this interesting interview with Bennett Cerf by Mike Wallace. I laughed at the commercial at the beginning.

      What's My Line?
      I found it.
      "At that time there was a rumor current that Mike Wallace was going to replace John Daly as the head of ABC news. Some nasty people thought that this may have been part of the reason that John didn't want him--because he heard these rumors. Dorothy promptly called up the Journal American and gave them the story. Monday it was on the front page of the Journal American. John Daly never forgave her for this. He said, “I thought that we were a family during 'What's My Line?‘We've been doing it for years. What I said there was in confidence.” Dorothy said, “Not at all. I'm a reporter and that was a big story. I certainly wasn't going to get scooped on my own story. You see, it was on the front page.” John said, “Yes...because of this idea that I was maybe doing it out of personal jealousy.” He never forgave her."
      This makes the Mike Wallace interview that much sweeter.

      In his regular tv show, his character was a bachelor who was a professional photographer of lovely models and flirting with them...I think he was going to his stage character that the audience knew well...much like if Alan Alda had become his character Hawkeye from MASH during an interview. Cummings was playing it for laughs.

    For some reason, the European actors Hollywood imported after WW2 had nothing like the pull of earlier ones such as Garbo, Chevalier, Dietrich, Lamarr or Boyer. Neither Maria Schell nor her brother Maximilian scored in English-speaking films. Rather as she appears here, she came over as a timid, drippy little mouse. Americans preferred more full-blooded gals, e.g. Loren.

    I love the panelists and Daly. I watched them live on CBS as a child. However, in my maturity, and as someone who has studied regional accents professionally, the silliness of the accents, charming when I heard them as a child, grate on me now. Except for Bennett Cerf who's not on this edition, all of them have burnished their accents with a pretentiousness. Even Joplin, MO native Robert Cummings has strapped on several non-rhotic Rs for the occasion. Arlene Francis, especially, has modified her Boston accent so that it's impossible to tell where in the Boston area she's from. It's morphed into a overly ripe theatrical, mid-Atlantic accent. One would think she would drop it when she's not on the B'way stage. Daly, of course, has modified his Johannesburg/Boston accent as well. Cerf, on the other hand, has retained his Hell's Kitchen twang. Good for him! Indeed, he was the least pretentious of the regulars.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 Před rokem

      Hell's Kitchen? Cerf came from a prosperous middle class family. He was no street scrapper. He said he had been solvent and lucky from birth.
