I'm transplanting it today into a pot with a central post, here's hoping it neither breaks nor I get spiked to death in the process. @sackboymahalo Před 3 lety +2

      @@1980mezza I do not top off the soil in the planters although every month I add 2 trowels of manure compost to each plant. I do not think topping of the soil will result in root rot. As long as there is good drainage I do not think it will be a problem. I have seen growers add or dump a lot of compost to the plants once a year and this serves as nutrients for the plants the whole year as the compost breaks down. I hope this answers your question. Thank you so much for you great videos! They are so helpful. I am relatively new as a dragonfruit grower in East Co San Diego and now see that I have broken all 5 rules!🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️ but I am determined to learn and grow in success of helping my stems produce fruit! Question…some growers suggest only 3 stems per branch and taking the tips off the ends. I see your plants are full of fruit so I am very interested in your wisdom of this and the understanding of trimming and tipping off the ends.

      Hello. I mainly trim for the 3 Ds (dead, dying and diseased branches as well as for balancing of the post. I used to "tip" but I don't anymore. I did not see any difference between tipped and untipped branches as far as fruit production. I just let the branches grow. I hope this helps. Thank you again. 👍😊👍 Cheers

    Very good tips. How can we get lot of fruits fast with young plants?
    For overcrowded, I guess we can always prune them.
    Also how did you build pot and trellis?

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo Před 4 lety

      Hello. Usually you get few fruits from young plants because they have few branches and as they mature they have more branches which translate to more storage of energy to be able to support more fruit production. I guess you can coax the plant to grow more branches by increasing nitrogen application during the first year.

    Great video Sackboymahalo, thank you.
    I have a question, I am in South Florida and about 2 years ago, I planted approx. 14 Dragon Fruit plants (mixed varieties, sorry, did it before I saw your video) in groups of 4, grew very well on their 4-foot trellis, however the plants produced many, many beautiful, healthy-looking flowers but did not set fruit, I only got 3 fruits in the 2-year period. I have tried pollinating them in different ways, using my hand, placing the pollen in a container and using a soft brush to pollinate them, swapping the pollen from plant to plant with a brush or leaving them alone without success.
    Like I said, the plants and flowers look very healthy and pretty; an observation, I don't know if it's normal, in a group of plants, I find many bugs at the inner base of the flowers, they look like small brown weevils, they can only fly a little, (Nitops craigheadi ???) I don't know if they are harmful or beneficial, I don't know if that has something to do with no bearing fruit, apart from that, I don't see any other bug outside of the plants that affects them, any suggestions? Thanks in advance
    I found a video that it shows something similar to what I see inside the flowers:

      Hello. Some varieties need cross pollination to produce fruit. Do you have a variety that is fertile (does not need pollens from a different to set fruit)? I have a variety that I know is fertile that I get pollens from for use in cross pollination. I usually collect the pollens from all the flowers that bloomed in one small container. After collecting all the pollens, I mix them together before I go around and start cross pollinating the flowers. I then store the excess pollens in the freezer for future use.. • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo Před 3 lety

      Hello. Cuttings grow at different rates depending on their maturity. I had a cutting that showed growth after 2 1/2 months. I say keep the cutting (no growth) in the pot. My "pots" are 55 gallon barrels cut in half and yes they are buried underground and are open to the soil (no bottoms). You can keep the pots as is - no need to bury. I suggest using a pot that can hold at least 12 inches of soil depth and heavy/big enough that it can safely anchor the plant when it gets big and top heavy. The third is slow release Osmocote 14-14-14 when I see flower buds starting to developed (this year was April, 1-2 table spoons per plant) and October. I usually increase the frequency of the application of the 14-14-14 during the fruiting time then decrease it back down come winter.
