Exploring Skopelos - Off the Beaten Path June 2024
Often overlooked by visitors, inland Skopelos is a hidden gem. This video shares two days of exploring some of the ignored areas of the island.
(00:005) Sendoukia, situated on one of the island's highest ridges, is a neolithic burial site and the setting for some impressive panoramic views. To reach the site, take a rather rough dirt track to the trail head, then follow the path for about 1 km.
(00:55) Kalogeros is a small farming hamlet and the last settlement that cannot be accessed by a paved road. By vehicle, it takes about 30 mins to reach from Skopelos Town and, as of Summer 2024, it was best reached by 4x4 or hiking. Word is that the dirt track will be paved - probably changing forever the isolated serenity of the place. When we were there the only occupants were two lonely, but very friendly, cats.
(01:19) Prophitis Ellias is in one of the prettiest settings accessible by a short trail above the Glisteri Beach junction.
(01:34) Kimisi Theotokou is one of several monasteries on the island, although it is rather isolated with a unique and stunning view looking over Skopelos Bay toward the island of Alonnisos. Unfortunately, it was closed when we visited so we were unable to see the interiors.
(01:46) Lastly, Pyrgos is a quiet farming community with several old kalderimis (flagstone paths) still intact. The area is known for its plum orchards, bee keeping and, increasingly, for the vineyards reemerging after being lost 60 years ago by a phylloxera blight.
If you are hiking or visiting these areas, please be mindful of the exposure to the sun and heat - especially in July and August.
Please take precautions to ensure not to endanger the forest during fire season.
