The Whole Armour of God: First World War army chaplains finding a role

In February 1919 the Army Chaplains Department received the accolade of becoming the Royal Army Chaplains Department in recognition of the work they had carried out in the First World war.
Total war brought many challenges to the department and the talk will examine their success in finding a role involving the multifaceted nature of their work at the frontline and behind the lines.
Chaplains were present in the front line, at dressing stations, behind the lines at camps and base hospitals, taking services in all conditions and looking after the material and spiritual needs of the men, striving to bring God to men in the maelstrom of war.
Dr Linda Parker is an independent scholar and author who has published mainly on 20th century military and religious topics, but also on polar exploration. She is interested in all modern History, is a member of the WFA, Royal Historical Society, and a founder member of the British Modern Military Society. She enjoys traveling to conferences and talking about her books.
