  • Garmin has released its public beta of the Edge 1050 features, for the Edge 540/840/1040 units.
    Here's the links to the betas:
    Garmin Edge 540/840: forums.garmin.com/beta-progra...
    Garmin Edge 1040 beta: forums.garmin.com/beta-progra...
    This allows those that are eager to start reporting that angry dog down the street as a 'road hazard' (or Dairy Queen as an obstruction), you can now do so. All of the non-hardware features of the Edge 1050 were released last night in public beta to the Edge 540, 840, 1040. The Edge Explore 2 public beta hasn’t quite shown up yet.I do want to briefly acknowledge that I think this is the first time Garmin actually pulled off both new device + beta firmware for existing devices on the *same day*.
    Historically, that gap of new features coming to older devices has been anywhere from weeks to ‘never’. Back earlier this month when I met with the Edge team, they said their goal was to release it the same day as the Edge 1050. I smiled and said “That’s great!”, while inside my head I said “Uh-huh…sure you will just like my kids will pickup the Legos on the floor”. Thus, kudos to them for actually pulling it off.I legitimately think it makes a difference, from a brand perception standpoint, when companies do that. It’s become slightly more popular over the last few years, but is still somewhat rare to do concurrent-day stuff like that.In any case, onto the details!

      It’s actually ridiculous, about 18 months ago it flipped from being nervous about driver to being nervous about the roads for me. It’s now impossible for me to go at a reasonable speed on roads I don’t know because the roads are so bad, I don’t know how I haven’t broken a wheel yet

    • @danielbliss1988
      @danielbliss1988 Před 4 dny +4

      The UK implementation needs a feature for automated direct uploading of pothole reports to the DfT and local authorities. Likewise, about 40 to 45 US states really could use direct uplinks to their respective DOTs and just about every major rust belt city in the US needs an upload to their 311 service or streets & sanitation departments.

    I am still using my 530 unit but have been wanting to upgrade for a while. I like the fact that Garmin seems to always be very generous with releasing new units with new functionalities but also allowing for the same new features to be available for older devices, so while the 1050 looks awesome it also comes with a matching price tag and since I like the smaller physical size anyway I might just get the 840 when I decide to upgrade. Also the 840 has got buttons as well as touch screen, which is another thing I really prefer.

    • @vrapan
      @vrapan Před 4 dny +13

      generous? they only give the features to the last generation and i am assuming that is because they have to keep the 1040 around because of the massive hit to battery life that screen has on the 1050. They are stingy beyond belief especially for devices that cost the equivalent of a mid/high end phone.

    • @_J.F_
      @_J.F_ Před 4 dny +7

      @@vrapan I think the reason is that the 530 and 1030 are too old and with too outdated processors to deal with the new functionalities offered. This happens across all brands simply because tech moves forward at quite a pace and rather than getting into all sorts of problems with things that won’t run on old units the old units just do not get these updates. Exactly the same happens with all IT and similar tech regardless of brand.

    Will definitely appreciate the fast gradient calculations, I do quite a bit of climbs and it's pretty funny seeing 10% when it's actually 18% or doing U type descents where it's still showing climbs when I'm descending already. What I'd really appreciate is if they somehow managed to make the "Instant Phone Keyboard" feature that Garmin watches have available to Edge units. I'd like to type from my phone than using the somewhat clunky keyboard layout on my edge.

      As someone with the 1040 solar it's not worth it for me. Sure the crisper screen is nice but with such a large display already I can clearly see 5-6 fields at any time. Again the speaker is nice, but a beep which tells me to glance at the screen is preferable to a voice giving me directions.
      I'll take the extra 10h of batter life, the current mount placement and the solar charging over any of the new features.

      I've never used it. And yes, there are other brands out on the market. Half of people I know use Wahoo, the others Garmin, fewer use Bryton or other brands. But I noticed that Wahoo has a better capability of showing cyclists on a map, as it shows all that have enabled their visibility on a map, and not like in Garmin where you have to choose riders/friends from your connection list. In Wahoo you do not have to have any of them in your connection list of any sort. For many there may be too much hassle and bothering in adding/finding people in Garmin Connect, and also some may not use GC as such.

The 1040 is only 100 feet or a flat asses line where I live. The 705 allowed both horizontal and vertical independent adjustment on the vertical screen not the 1040. I wish I could get my 705 back.
