“How does laughing at the bad things you do make it any less bad?”
This right here is the Nostalgia Critic quote that left the biggest impact on me.
And yet I’m not sure why.
That’s actually kinda powerful
I believe it’s powerful because he shows you can’t just laugh at the bad things you do(think Disney when they do meta jokes and commentary on the tropes they are famous for and are guilty of) you gotta make amends and Try to something different, that’s who you grow and at the same time make art grow.
@UCh-5f-y-i_gnFmIeh7dyGlA haha nope not until the other comments were talking about it
The original Oncelier was faceless and he kept justifying reasons for going bigger until it went too far and wiped out the trees. What makes the Seuse version great is that he acknowledged that you can’t just stop cutting down trees, the real solution is sustainability.
Yeah we can cut down trees while still keeping nature alive by planting more we can’t just dismiss it and sit around letting nature die
"I've actually seen the iron giant, ok."
You know what, don't care about all the things you haven't seen, this made me incredibly happy to hear. I was expecting to be sad when I hear 'never seen that.' I'm happy.
It’s the small things in life I guess
There's a really good song that was cut from this movie called "Biggering". Well, I say "cut" but it's more accurate to say it was altered and bastardized into a pop song called "How Bad Can I Be?" I'd give it (Biggering) a listen if you get a chance, it's a damn good song, and it's absence from this movie is very telling when it comes to the people that made it.
The best thing that came from the Lorax movie, and its not even in the movie!
yep the same goes with the intro song ----- why did they change those songs ---- the originals where so much better and had way more potential for a better storry
The fact that this movie robbed us of one of the greatest villain songs ever just makes it even worse.
Biggering is the logical evolution of How Bad Can I Be? and it's a CRIME we never got it properly done.
Uhhh what?
@@theduckgoesmoo If you have the time to, look up both "How Bad Can I Be?" and "Biggering" with the lyrics, and compare what we all got and what we could have had.
@@theduckgoesmoo Biggering is a far more darker version of How Bad Can I Be. It's like a Pink Floyd song about how pride and greed corrupts people.
Yes it is a fantastic villain song. I agree with joshscorcher on that one. At least is my favorite villain song.
There is no villain in the book, essentially just a warning. Because the onceler in the book regrets cutting down the trees and tells the kid (audience) about the dangers of taking more than you need from the earth. We also never see his face, and he justifies what he’s doing to himself initially, so it simply tells the audience that anyone can get greedy and do serious harm. That’s the problem doug is getting at. Because the new movie has lots of one dimensional bad guys the audience doesn’t associate them with anything they could be doing and are just left feeling good instead of thinking about what they could do to help the environment.
Exactly like no one thinks they’re a bad person or that something won’t ever happen to them
There's actually a short animated special of the Lorax you can find on youtube, it's 25 minutes long and was mad in 1972, I'm pretty sure Dr Seuss himself was involved in making it, he was involved in a lot of his tv adaptations around that time, he even made an animated sequel to the Grinch.
Now that sounds like a classic
The book mostly takes place in the past. The Onceler telling the kid his story. There is no present day villain
Sadly, this movie didn't bomb. It made nearly 350 million on a budget of 70 million.
talking to the trees
Sigh
@theduckgoesmoo Worst part about the Illumination botch-jobs: they're so cheap, and the company founder, Chris Meledandri, is so good at marketing these films, that failure is nearly impossible. Barely any of their films pass $100m in budget.
15:38 - "That's why you get a VPN." I legitimately expected an ad spot right there. :P It happens in SO MANY videos now.
Haha I’ve never used a VPN before and I’ve never been offered a deal with one. CZcams doesn’t pay as great as many people think, so I get it
@@theduckgoesmoo Yeah, YT's payout policy is honestly ass.
I have no issues with sponsorships like this so long as the person making the video actually practices what they preach. Like, if I had a big channel and I hated a particular VPN company, I think one of the scummiest things I could do would be accepting a sponsorship from that company.
@@MoostachedSaiyanPrince that’s why the only company I’m partnered with is Vitaminwater because I drink it every single day and did for several years before they even approached me. If I ever do a brand deal it’s going to be something I believe in and or use and trust. If I ever do merch I will make sure it’s a level of quality I’d be happy with myself if I bought it.
as someone who's seen the cartoon and the movie, there is a point kinda ignored about the original cartoon and the book, in both the lorax comes to the onceler a few times, showing him the problems he's causing at each stage and the onceler keeps making excuses claiming stuff like "well am I to lay off my staff, what about their families" and the lorax claims he doesn't have an answer, except there is an obvious answer the lorax is right, what he was doing is wrong and bad for the enviroment and all his excuses led to the last tree being cut down and him not only losing his business, and laying off his people anyway, destroying the land and causing permanent damage to nature. There was no upside to what he was doing and because he used those excuses and was being short seighted it caused more damage in the long term to both people and nature.
In my opinion he was the bad guy, you could say pride or greed was the bad guy as people will make excuses to further both
On the grander scheme you're correct but you're kinda missing the point of the question asked. The Once-ler was asking if it was good economics and for stability of the country just shut down the factory and fire 100 thousand people. Basically the Once-ler veiled his argument to be: "Is trying fix the nature worth all the human suffering it would cause?" To that the Lorax had no good answer. The answer should obviously be yes because we are part of the nature and so once it's gone so are we but it becomes far harder to personally justify when you personally are impacted by the change in a very negative way (like losing your job which could lead you to live a very meager life). Humans are very good at justifying bad things especially when they are personally impacted by them. It's very pertinent question especially now days as we are impacted by the global warming more and more.
@@Shadeius its more the extremes, weirdly enough the onceler in the movie tried to do the balance, by just plucking the stuffs and not cutting down the trees. He just got bad advice from people saying its better to work faster than anything else.
the answer should always be yes cause if nature dies we die, we are apart of nature, the short time gains won't me anything if we can't survive
My best friend was one of those people who were really obsessed with this movie’s version of the Onceler. I like to bring it up to her every once in a while xD
"You never seen Bambi? Hun."
*Zoom at Dear*
"Spoilers" Shoot
I was rooting for the Hunter in Bambi... venison is tasty af!
The song “Biggering” was supposed to replace “how bad can I be” and it’s a far more fitting song.
Fun fact i live near a logging company and found out they actually treat their trees like a farm and replant them after cutting them down and clean up the trash around their tree farms
That’s great! I think most logging companies do that unless they’re cleaner the land or just don’t care. I believe like the Amazon rain forest they don’t care what they leave behind
@@theduckgoesmoo The Amazon rainforest is mostly Chinese and other foreign companies to my knowledge
Dr. Seuss had one hell of an imagination. He really knew how to play with ambiguity and to let your mind wander with all sorts of fantastic imagery. The Lorax might just be my favorite book by him.
There’s a bunch of movies like this Lorax movie where you can look at the COVER and know you aren’t going to find anything worthwhile. Like the movies about toys with no lore, no character, no nothing, but they shove one together using a recognizable brand. Like the angry birds movie. Or the emoji movie. They just HOPE the recognizable marketing carries it. What gave this one away was the commercials. Stick the Lorax on a car company, and you officially have lost anything and EVERYTHING it was about. I’m happy everyone forgot this movie and no one talks about it. And if they do, it’s what NOT to do.
Humans are humans. If you don’t explore what could make them evil overtime as they cut themselves off from healthy choices. Help steer people away from that cutoff. And you don’t get that by answering for them. You do it by having them think through situations tough or not, and challenging their thought process. You can only protect kids from the harsh world for so long. If they only have the black and white outlook, with none of the VARIETY of gray area they are VERY ill prepared.
It’s going to lead to unprepared adults and less ingenuity
This movie has so many problems man. It screams "We have the rights to something nostalgic but we don't really understand the nuance of it and how to make a big feature around the simple story so lets add a bunch of generic fluff, a generic villain and pop references" It's just...so terrible.
And it hits even more because the original drafts and even a cut song from the production just shows that there was actually potential from the writers and team that the executive were like "yeah none of that"
It’s a shame they actually profited from this
What's crazy about the story is....he could have planted more seeds for every tree chopped down? Why not just replant to not only keep the forest going but also the production going at the same time?
"It's rule34 isn't it?"
Well... rule34 was involved but it went... S O M U C H beyond just pornography. Let's just say it was less of a fandom and more of a cult.
The Lorax book and original movie is actually very sad. At least it was to me.
Nostalgia Critic: "OMG, this Once-ler is so dated for playing the electric guitar!"
Also Nostalgia Critic @ 11:48: *uses 19th-century violin music in his video*
Welcome to the Hyper Fan Girl running joke's origin.
Oh no
You should read the book
It's a cautionary tale of greed and hubris.
Believe it or not, this was the first appearance of Hyper Fangirl, starting a multi-episode arc that continues for three more episodes; first "Old vs. New: Spider-Man," then in the "Small Soldiers" review, climaxing in the review of "Princess Diaries 2," and resolving by the "Christmas Story 2" review. It's a pretty fun storyline. You'll get a kick out of it!
I must say, I am skocked that you didn’t capitalize on Easter weekend by reacting to something more theme appropriate. I’m of course talking about Critic's and Snob crossover review of Passion of the Christ.
Or NC’s review of Hop.
You see I haven’t heard of either of those movies
Oh, you no idea what you’re missing. Passion is easily the funniest review the two have done together.
I love the Nostalgic critic started with The Giving Tree
Along with it's "misguided" advertising campaign, I think the opening was also a reference to the book "The Giving Tree".
In the book, the present day parts are just a frame story that take up a tiny part of it, the other 80-90% is the flashback to the Once-ler and Lorax and how everything happened.
One thing I find interesting is how much stuff was cut or changed clearly pretty late in production, and it seems like many of the things that get complaints in this one were late additions. Ted seems like a much more interesting character, rather than impressing a girl he's just met, he's portrayed as more of a brat and I'm guessing the whole point of the Once-ler telling him the story was because he realized that Ted was going down the same road he was. But by giving Ted a less selfish motivation, it kind of removed the point of the plot. Also the cut song "Biggering" is amazing and I can't recommend listening to it enough.
Also if, whether on your own time or reacting, you ever get curious about the whole Once-ler thing, Sarah Z has done a really good deep dive into the history and development of the fandom which is really interesting. Although if you're going to watch any of her videos, I recommend the one on Dashcon. Words cannot describe how crazy that convention got.
The ending of this one is kinda weird for me. On one hand I 100% understand the complaints and agree that the Lorax coming back wasn't the best choice from a standalone story standpoint. But I saw the original Lorax when I was like 4 or 5 and so for me it didn't feel like he was coming back after the flashback, it felt like he was coming back after decades of my life, and I started crying pretty hard. So on one hand it was a writing misstep, on the other it was a misstep that had a huge emotional impact on me for entirely unintentional reasons. So... yeah, I don't really know what to make of that.
Unless.... unless some like you cares an awful lot
nothing will change, no it will not...
I highly recommend the Lorax, both the movie and the 1970s cartoon version.
Fun fact: the Lorax was actually banned from some school libraries for a time
Like me? What can I do?
"Why'd they throw a full bag of Lays chips?"
I'm afraid there is no such thing as a full bag of Lays chips, Qyle.
That one appeared to be empty so it’s the same as an unopened bag
Theduckgoesmoo, next time you and Kirby are togather you should check out 2 Hazbin Hotel themed songs. “Use Me Up” which is an Angel Dust song that is fire, and “Smile Like You Mean It” which is an Alastor song that is really catchy and the Alastor voice is spot on.
watch the 1968 animated version to better understand
The Oncelier fan base was an actual thing for a while, I forget where it started but some suggest it started in Tumblr. There's documentaries about it but that's all I know.
8:30 Ha! I get it. Cause chip bags are 85% air when you buy them & 15% chips
Proud of you for getting it!
Watch his review of Spawn. I know I keep asking for different reviews, but there’s just a lot of enjoyable ones to watch.
read the lorax book
Given what we’ve seen in real life, the CEO guy and other business people are 100% realistic. There’s no such thing as a cartoonish supervillain
You definitely got to expand your filmography my friend.
Also react to Nostalgia Critic, Alvin and the Chipmunks
That one has been on my radar a while
@@theduckgoesmoo I also recommend his Top 11 Batman The Animated Series Episodes video, as well as his videos on Disney Afternoon, Fox Kids and Toonami
The point of the Lorax is that consumers are just as responsable for what companies does as the companies themselves, afterall how bad can they be if they are giving the consumers exactly what the consumers want?
You really should read the book. It’s a classic and a great way to teach children the importance of the environment and the dangers of greed and pride without being preachy. You’ll be shocked how much of this movie isn’t in it.
If only I knew how to read
YES, i’m happy you watched this NC it’s one of my favourites
you should definitly react to "biggering" lorax song that was cut out and replaced ----- was such a great song and they replaced it with garbage
"I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. But for some f***ing reason, they're speaking Vietnamese."
Also, they get Zack Efron and Taylor Swift in this movie, and they DON'T GET THEIR OWN SONGS.
Because what would the guy that became famous from a trilogy of musicals and an actual POP SINGER know about singing pop music?
THATS A GREAT POINT I DIDNT THINK ABOUT
@@theduckgoesmoo In fact, I checked, Efron's character did have a song, but it was cut.
The song was about how he wanted more and more of the latest big thing, but he would justify it by saying that he "needed" them. That would tie into the themes of materialism and greed.
Next Nostalgia Critic should be VR Troopers... By JonTron.
I have never read Dr. Seuss (I'm not sure if there even are german adaptations), but I can understand the frustration of the movie ignoring what made the books great. (or cartoon, in case of Avatar, the last Airbender)
It’s a little different the point of avatar is to be a great show and story that teaches lessons. The Lorax is nothing but a story with a lesson and they completely removed the lesson part
On this episode of how the fuck has duck never read or seen, The Lorax.
back in the day they used to be a massive thing called Onecest ----bascily the young onecler x the buissniuss oncler (the greedler)
The fact the Lorax has sponsor ships with Mazda, HP Printers, IHop, and Comcast kind of destroys everything it was trying to accomplish. Also, this film has a "save the trees" message near the end when they should have stuck toward how the people who want these fine products are the real villains.
I particularly enjoy the "Man of Steel" and "Supergirl" reviews. Would love to see you do one of those in the near future.
As someone that loves How the Grinch stole Christmas and the Cat in the Hat,both the Lorax and the Grinch 2018 are both the Worst Dr.Seuss and Illumination Entertainment Movies, the Lorax should have been Dark and Depressing while takelingthe Harsh Truth and Reality about Corporations and abusing Nature, like every Illumination Movies however they play ot Safe and Ruined the Darkest Book of the Author, the Best example of this has to do with the Cancelled Song Biggering because this Song is was supposed to be,too bad Doug forgot that Impossible Detail.
I highly recommend seeing nostalgia critics review of Princess diaries 2: Royal engagement.
Ya know you CAN watch The Lorax (1972...The GOOD one) right now on CZcams believe it or not
Why do these dumb reboots have to make such short stories so complex?
The old Chuck Jones shorts of pieces like the Cat in the Hat, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hears A Who and yes, especially The Lorax got the stories' points across so much easier.
Why does Cindy Lou need to be an adventurous tomboy, why add in the dumb Thneedville plot with O'Hare, why turn Horton into a moron who does anime references?
Fun Fact: This review was the first appearance of Black Willy Wonka.
That implies more appearances
They made a green eggs and ham TV series on Netflix they just finished the 2nd season. It's animated.
and I heard it's actually good.
Bruh why
@@theduckgoesmoo It’s like the only good Dr. Seuss adaptation, I recommend it
Bland piece of who ass!? That’s the funniest, most accurate description of Audrey (Taylor Swift’s character) in this god awful Lorax movie. LMFAO 😅😂🤣
I know we like think Dr. Seuss wouldn’t stand for what they’ve done to his books, but actually be probably wouldn’t care. Seuss actually wasn’t fond of child, despite being known for children’s books. He mostly made them to support his actual art. Which was a little…risky. Basically what would be deviant art. Also we’ve been pronouncing his name wrong. Seuss(soos)is actually pronounced Seuss(sus). The word nerd was actually created by him. I am not kidding. He also cheated on his first wife, who I believe had cancer, and she committed suicide when finding out. Granted she left a note saying it wasn’t his fault. However it was questionable. Considering he married his mistress a month after his wife passed.
Day 58 of asking you to react to Super Eyepatch Wolf's"No dad, wrestling is for grown ups!!! I-WHY WON'T YOU LOOK AT ME-"trilogy.
Didn't they cut down trees for the book too.
I recommend Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 Batman the Animated Series Episodes.
Zack Braff is actually a reference to futurama. He's a famous captain and incredibly arrogant and idiotic.
That's wrong Zach Braff is an actor
What you're talking about is Zapp Brannigan
@@SuperMandibleclaw Oh, my mistake. I thought that was zap Brannigan. So the character acts like one of the character he acts in?
annnnnd then The Onceler became mega popular on Tumblr, but they had no one to ship him with so they ended up shipping the Pre green Onceler with the Greedier one. So he ended up being shipped with himself. Also then they expanded this by creating a fandom where everyone just made their own Oncelers and Tumblr was overrun by Onceler Tumblr Ask Blogs. I know cause I was there for it haha
Have you read any dr suess books
Hey duck gonna compliment your thumbnail I don't know why but it's just so funny to me
Haha thanks!
Even if you haven’t seen Bambi, you at least know the story. Getting more upset the times you keep seeing “I’ve never seen”. What, did you live under a rock? Even people who lived under rocks know the story of Bambi or seen Disney Channel. No offense, but watch more goddamn movies and tv
