i think Tool and Om are very simillar bands in a certain way, but Tool has more of 'clean' sound and production with meticulosly crafted song structures (although it's very heavy) , while Om has more of a raw energy that tends come from jams and improvisation. I love tool so much, but Om has a special thing i can't explain.
This stuff is awesome don't get me wrong but stoner/doom metal will never have as much punch or pith as Tool Neither of them are particularly beautiful in that they don't use harmony and rely very much on premodern melodic structures (only post-medieval Western music broke from this convention) so it's still very much applicable to other cultures' music, so that's why, for me, when Tool isn't being aggressive or just more straightforward, I prefer this stuff for the more esoteric aspects.
