This was the perfect song for Kaibas character, and I think it represents his relationship with Yugi really well. Yugi was always trying to get Kaiba to change, but Kaiba was solidly set in his ways.

DSoD ends with Kaiba going to the afterlife as a living person just to duel Yami again because he just refused to accept that there was someone better than him out there. Kaiba is a tragic and complex character. He was a kind hearted kid, and aspects of this kid stayed inside him, but for the most part he was completely ruined by his father Gozaburo. His father tried to drill into Seto that he must always win at all costs and be the strongest, the sad thing is that Seto could never grow out of this.
This really interests me--it shows a potential side of Kaiba's character that never was unearthed in the series. What this song says to me, is...he DOES want friends, but everyone who tries wants to change him instead of trying at all to understand who he actually is--and it's understandable that this side would never show, because nowhere does he get this more than when the show forces him to be in contact with Yugi & co.
This is actually my issue with Kaiba's character in the series - or rather, everyone's reaction to Kaiba. They judge him based on their preconceptions. If the rest of the crew accepted that yes, he might be cold and aloof, but Kaiba himself does do genuinely good things. My issue is they also very much killed his character between Sub and Dub. Dub dismisses everything as 'glitches' or 'nonsense'. In the sub, he's genuinely accepting of the Magicks happening around him, he just doesn't want any part in them unless he's forced to.

A lot of that is what animation company Toei used for which episodes. It's especially apparent in the Virtual Reality, Noah, Orichalcos and Kaiba Grand Prix arcs since they're filler, but I'm sure by the time they got to the Memory World arc they wanted to rush it out to save as much money as possible. As for the manga, it's the same as practicing something. The more often you do it, the better you get, and then you're able to take shortcuts and improve your style.
As a Seto Kaiba rper, and cosplayer.. I can say this song really does fit his character. It's just wonderful, and I'm glad I stopped by to listen to it again.
