  • In this video I'm going to show you exactly how I mounted my dual 100W solar panels to the crossbars on my Openroad Roof Top Tent. However, this method should work for pretty much any clamshell or wedge style roof top tent with crossbars. It might require a bit of modification if your set up is different, but hopefuly this gives you some ideas to make it work!

Super helpful video. Do you know the measurement between the channels/slots in the OpenRoad tent's cross bar? Hoping to find brackets I can use w/o modification. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay! Had to get out and get a measurement. From the center of each rail, the distance is about 23 1/2 inches.

Hey Fletch, why two small panels instead of one big one?

Good question. I specifically sized these to fit on top of the RTT because it's kind of narrow. I saw a few 200 watt single panels, but they seemed more expensive (like most were around $200 for the single panel) but these two panels were just over $100 shipped for both.
I actually have a flexible 200W panel already sitting in my office, but then I would have had to mess with adhesive and the cross bars would have been blocking a portion of it, especially if I put anything on top of the cross bars.
A lot of the 200W single panels seemed to be significantly longer too and I didn't want much of the panels overhanging and flexing in the wind, so it's about 50% price and 50% I happened to find these that fit and weren't huge, lol.

Do you use an inverter with the solar panels?

I have an inverter that I hook up to my 200AH house battery which is charged off of the solar. It works great with that much capacity and 200W of solar keeping it topped off.

How does this charger do u have to run ur car on ? I'm planning on getting one

As long as you have some sort of controller to manage the solar input, you don’t have to run your vehicle at all. It just constantly pumps in power to your batteries when the sun is out.
