- Recreating all of the guitar tones in the Architects song 'When We Were Young' using the STL Tonality Josh Middleton plugin.
The guitars are all re-recorded from scratch (as I didn't track DI's when recording the album).

Josh! Thank you for such videos! It's worth a lot!
Love how much I’m learning from these - thank you, Josh!
LOVE that josh and sylosis are finally getting some wider exposure man. the new songs are INSANELY GOOD. keep at it!
Josh, I love the ambient/atmospheric reverb type sounds you did in Sylosis "Cycle of Suffering" record; would you be willing to show how you created such sounds?
I love the guitar in this song and all of your guitar playing.
However this song touches the heart.
Thanks for all your amazing sound 😊❤
Amazing as always josh!!!
Love your work!
This is awesome
Excellent tutorial man. This is something I've learned too, it's surprising how much a tone is more altered than we think.
Sounds great, Josh!
your music saved me from really dark times , thank you so f ing much, josh.
Apologies for some clipping in the audio here. Noted for next time.
Will be a review video about Fortin Tempest?
love that main riff so much, meteora vibes
I would absolutely love to see a mix (or at least guitar tone) breakdown of Deadwood. Pittsburgh. Absolutely gnarly production, Josh!
I also like the teeth on the guitar tone. Ever since I heard Francesco Mattei's guitar tone from Noveria, it seems to be very similar to yours and I gravitate toward it. Thanks for sharing your mixing technique via your STL plugin.
thank you
Sounds awesome!! That lead tone remained me of the guitar solo in the crow dont' know why haha
Weirdly the tone sounds more full with some frequencies lowered in the mix. Great stuff!
Thanks so much Josh for taking the time putting this together. Great insights right there. Being the gentleman that you are, any plans on sharing these presets?
There are tons of presets I made that are included with the plugin. There isn't a preset of this exact tone but you can see all of the settings in this video which you can copy
This sounds awesome. I'm interested in your latest Kemper pack, are there profiles with different overdrives in the chain?
Epic, mate! You should start a Patreon. Would be happy to support for content like this.
show vst already tested metal stl tonatity josh master
I noticed a lot of pick chirp on the intro riff, was that an intentional decision to give it some character? Also, what drives you to choose Fabfilter and C4 over Cubase Frequency where you can achieve the same results? (Threshold reactive EQ is a godsend)
@joshmiddleton what string gauges and tuning are you using ?
question i have your plugin why is there so many volume drop outs and issues
Does anyone else notice a scratchy/high frequency 'quack' noise in some of the guitar tracks, when the pick hits the string? You can hear it on the octave intro riff best in this vid (14:30). I've also noticed it on some Sylosis tracks, mostly the Dormant Heart era. I think its coming from the fishman fluence pups... wondered if anyone else has noticed it?
Its all about the way you shape your tone. Fishman is really good at boosting high frequincys but you can cut them out with an EQ plugin
That’s not due to the fishmen pickups. That’s the style he chose to play, tilting the pick to create a scratchy sound that builds intensity. He could’ve notched out the frequency that the “quack” was causing, but it’s just the style he choose for the intro.
Josh, I’m still trying to figure out why the STL Tonality pack I purchased will not work for me. I’ve posted a video on my channel showing what is happening. Please help.
What daw are you using?
Do you always dial your tones in headphones?
I did the mix for this a few months ago (when creating content for the plugin - the audio for the STL WWWY playthrough is this mix with the plugin tones). I mixed on speakers but used headphones for this video to avoid audio bleeding into the mic. You'll see in a few instances I'm surprised by what I'm finding in this mix because I'm revisiting something I did a few months prior.
Hey man why i can’t pay with mastercard debit, i want buy IR
JOSH, can you tell us the chain used? Guitar? DI? Soundcard ?
Just plugged straight into a focusrite interface
