John Zorn's Bar Kokhba troops performing Gevurah Song available on album Circle Maker. Marc Ribot - guitar Cyro Baptista - percussion Mark Feldman - violin Erik Friedlander - cello Greg Cohen - bass Joey Baron - drums
If you can locate Zorn’s email or contact information would you please send it to me. We were close friends in our twenties. In Oregon and he also visited in Los Angeles. At that time he walked around with his alto saxophone. Dirty ponytail half a mustache and pretty unclean. My ear was not sophisticated enough for his music but he was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. He lives in New York and Japan. He has become very famous and his music is very sought after. He has this Jewish thing going on which I don’t fully understand. I always knew he was destined for either greatness or an asylum. Great mind. Great sense of humor and a force to be reckoned with. He won’t even allow news people into his concerts. Says he is playing for the people. Hmmmmm pretty gutsy. So if you have his contact information I will be forever indebted. Thanks
yeah, i haven't listened to much progressive, it's a bit too calm for my tastes, although there was an anime themed prog album i heard a couple weeks ago, it wasn't that bad, but i'm more into the extreme underground genres
I confess I do not know anything about Jewish mysticism as far as the title “Gevurah” is concerned. The beauty of this piece of music is kind of mystic in itself and does not need a reference to be heartfelt. What is truly amazing about these seven minutes is the way these men play together in utmost concentration and harmony and joy.
gevurah is the strenght, linked to the link pole of the sephirotic tree. It suggest a contraction, like the one of a muscle. It is a compression, a movement which close and attract in a single point. it's obscurity, because of beind closed. From the same roots GVR come the name of the archangel Gabriel (gbr).
Love the whole piece. Can't underestimate the effect that Cyro Baptista's percussion has on this piece. It is unifying, yet makes it feel like it may go off the tracks at any moment. what genius this group exudes.
Every member of this troope is amazing....the group effort way outways the sum of the individual parts. Brilliant! (For some reason the gymnastic vault on the bass at 5:43 just makes me smile)
yes, composed and conducted by Zorn. The album 'circle maker', for example has this ensemble. There's also live album 'Bar Kokhba sextet - 50th birthday celebration volume 11', at least. check them out :-)
mijn god, wat is dit goed! ik klikte lukraak iets aan hier op CZcams van John Zorn omdat er een lecture over hem is aan UGent, en ik wou al eens horen of Zorn wel de moeite waard is. JA DUS
Wow this is hypnotic and i've been listening to it non stop for three days and the bad thing is it's in my head even when i'm walking around (SOMEONE CALL AN EXORCIST JOHN ZORN IS IN MY HEAD!!!!!)
Ugh, listen to the radio for a day and the main stations, then come home get on here and pull up this video and its like "ahhhh". Like a vice grip has been removed from your head; fuck this is good music.
@exquisiteoath a guiro.its used mostly in merengue,a style of music that originates in the dominican republic.its originally made of a gourd but the one you see might be made of aluminum.
come accade spesso coi masada di john zorn, la musica "si fa ascoltare" da sola, si muove autonomamente e quando meno te lo aspetti ti è già dentro... :) As often as it happens with john zorn's masada, the music itself "makes listen at" it: it moves in complete authonomy, and penetrate inside you without even you notice that.
I think it's great that John Zorn can do such coherent and beautifully orchestrated compositions like this, but is also known for the extremely noisy and chaotic work of Naked City.
yes Zorn's range is astounding but Naked City ain't nothin. check THIS out: this is what Zorn sounded like when I first encountered him in 1978 w/Eugene Chadbourne, years before I was gobsmacked by the Hebraic beauty of Masada in its many manifestations: czcams.com/video/XeCtrW28s_8/video.html
@Draekkus Oh yeah if anyone check's either of those, Khebar he's the guy with long hair, and in Portent he's the one pushing the limits of the saxophone.
that maybe true, but music that isn't only good but has also had a tremendous amount of thought put into it i think is more satisfying than music that is instantly accessible and instantly gratifying. this might sound cliche, but its the music that "grows on you" the more you listen to it that is the most gratifying type of music, in my opinion.
All musicians have been involved in Masada Project. You have ao: the Quartet, the Masada String Trio, the Masada Chamber Ensembles and the Electric Masada Octet
@Draekkus Definately, he is a extremely productive musician with an ability to reach and attack musical limitations and through this create art. Not only musically but also with publishing the Arcana Books Series which contains lots of musical and philosophical inspiration. Beyond this he created the Stone in New York and is supporting lots of independent artists, painters, visual artist though that. An important figure for exploring and expanding "sound as it is"....
I know you're joking but I envy his ability to focus and relax like that while plucking out notes without repeating himself. Pretty inspiring to see a guitarist speak with their instrument so fluidly.
Is this because he has an abnormally droopy nut sack? If not, what does this mean exactly. I am familiar with hallucinogenic trips, but they seldom, if ever, include balls specifically.
This is why I spend hundreds of hours searching out music.. This is it.
Ribot's beautiful soloing at his finest.
It's like looking in the mirror 20 year's ago. They all look so young!
I found John Zorn recently and have become somewhat obsessed... This guy is amazing...

Same, brother. Same.

Gevorah - גבורה - Heroism, Courage. Very beautiful peace indeed! The middle eastern themes are very well implemented

Oh is this Jewish? I thought it was surf music like Dick Dale's Miserlou.

Great
I'm fucking like a dog and listen this at the same time dude
Luis Rubio what
epic !
I'm pretty sure the guy playing the guitar is tripping balls.
Hahaha!
I know you're joking but I envy his ability to focus and relax like that while plucking out notes without repeating himself. Pretty inspiring to see a guitarist speak with their instrument so fluidly.
+ThePainkiller9995 Ribot is off the charts amazing on everything he plays.
haha!
Is this because he has an abnormally droopy nut sack? If not, what does this mean exactly. I am familiar with hallucinogenic trips, but they seldom, if ever, include balls specifically.
Yep here we go again ...
As far as I know, The Circle Maker - Zevulun, and Masada´s Live In Taipei CD1.
@MapachewithSniper
Mr. Bungle. He's got the same cartoon-y kind of feel and random breaks where the music goes crazy.
