  • Everyone knows exercise is good for your health, but new studies show it does more than flatten those abs-- it physically alters your brain to better handle stress! Anthony shows us this hidden, and hugely beneficial impact of working out.

    Anthony's telling the truth guys, if you're depressed or have anxiety problems or just worrying about things all the time in general, work out. Even if you have to force yourself to get on a work out schedule it will seriously improve your life pretty quickly. I had depression problems for a while and I've only been working out for three weeks straight and I'm already learning how to take a step back and calm down. It's not as hard as you may think to make a schedule, I workout twice a day on Mon, Tue, Thu, and Fri, (upper body in morning, abs & legs at night) it has seriously given me more energy, better sleep, better mood, and I'm much more enjoyable for others to be around in general. There are too many benefits for you to ignore!

      Well obviously there are too many benefits to ignore, but it isn't about ignoring them. I've been living with depression for three years and at the end of a school or work day, I'm just too tired. The last thing I can force myself to do is workout. I feel guilty about it but that's what it is. It's not always so easy.

    • @ThePotatocam
      @ThePotatocam Před 10 lety +9

      Allyson Rose the reason you are too tired is because you are not excercising. the irony ist hat if you would just excercise youd have the energy.
      youre brain chemistry would also change. like im not gonna patronize you it takes a lot of effort but frankly youre just making excuses. whatever shitty thing has been a downer in your life has already happened unless you have a way back machine to undo it you have to move forward or youre just going to lose more time. go out there and do it.

    • @lCaKeSl
      @lCaKeSl Před 10 lety +3

      ThePotatocam Couldn't have said it better myself, thanks for that. He's right Allyson, you really just have to put every small piece of effort you have forward to make yourself start working out or exercising, even if you only start out with quick walks or something, it helps tremendously. You'll only have to battle your laziness/tiredness for a short time before you start getting the effects of some fresh air and exercise, then it'll be a breeze to continue it once you get into the habit. It's worth it, there's no reason not to try your best, you're just wasting your time feeling down about everything when you could be much happier in under a month.

    Being military personnel, exercise is mandatory. I used to be depressed and lethargic but once I started training for the Army, I noticed I became more acclimated to a regular schedule as well as actually having the urge to exercise because it made me feel stimulated, clear-headed, and, most importantly, healthy allowing me more self-worth. It also conditioned me to be used to being active thus making every day tasks not feel so much like an obstacle or a chore but more like an accomplishment.

    Energy always moves. We are energy. So yes. The more you move the more your body changes into a new neurological form. Basically you send out the bad cells faster, (sweat, damaged micro tissues, toxins) allowing your immune system to clean an already picked up living room. Working out allows your immune system to not just function, but thrive in your healing.

    When I was going to my college gym, I was more mellow and didn't stress out often, feeling more relaxed more often. During my winter break when there were no classes, I became more anxious and would have outbursts from stress that really wasn't there. I just kept feeling that I wanted to run and just keep running. Or punch a bag or jump rope forever. I have finally restarted classes at the gym and I can tell you, I am much more relaxed. I went shopping with my brother today, who is utterly obnoxious, doesn't listen, and all around has a rotten attitude. I didn't even yell at him, even while he was demanding things and being a pain. It's rather amazing.

    In my opinion there is no downside to any physical exercise, whether it be weight training, running, yoga, rowing, football, sprinting, jumping, qigong, karate, stretching, walking, etc. There is something for everyone and the only mistake you can really make is overdoing it. Life is better when you are fit.

      Because the schools don't get recognized under whatever the hot program (No Child Left Behind, Common Core, etc) for having fit kids. It is very short-sighted, though - there's a book called "Spark" that has some data on what happened when they introduced a fitness program in some schools. I think it's up to parents now - maybe that will be more motivation for the moms and dads to get up and get out there with their kids!

If you fast walk for 60 mins the effect is even more powerful. For you I would recommend 60 minutes every single day and falling asleep before 10 pm at night. Preferably before 9pm. That combination has a powerful effect. Make sure you are eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables. Meditation is also very powerful. Combine all of those

My trainer had me do a plank for a minute and thirty seconds, and in the middle of it, I started crying. Mentally speaking, exercise doesn't make me feel better... I sleep worse, I feel worse, and for what? Back pain and miserable sleepy days at work? I'm still holding on there, thinking any of these days the switch will happen from depressed to happy... but it's starting to get to me emotionally.

Mindfulness and meditation are in essence the same thing, but they take different forms. Jon Kabat-Zinn, an expert on mindfulness, has several videos here on CZcams explaining mindfulness. I recommend both meditation and mindfulness because they help to heal the underlying causes of anxiety. Prescribed medication can also help tremendously.

    I remember how when I was still taking driving classes, I could easily get stressed when having to perform certain actions or maneuvers, which would make me drive very badly and with low confidence. Also, when me driving instructor mentioned words like "''Let's pretend that today would be your exam'', I would suddenly start driving much worse than before. One day I went and did plenty of sports before my class, I went running, drove my bike and got home rather tired. Then, during my class I felt so calm and above all, focused. That day it went really well and saw such big improvements in my driving skills. So when I finally had my actual driving exam, right before it I decided to do lots of sports too and even arrived home pretty late and still continued sweating after preparing myself to get in the car, but I was okay with it. In the end, I felt very relaxed and believe that doing sports has helped me so much to get through the exam, especially since I had always gotten nervous before I KNEW that I also be nervous when the time came for my exam.

    Anytime I'd push myself within the limits of what I can accomplish in the gym, (Aerobic more so than Anaerobic, mind you) I attained a vast amount of mental clarity, I would get urges to think about memories and relive them in those moments, as well as the derivation of theories regarding futuristic possibilities. There is no excuse that should allow you to avoid building or sustaining a healthy body, even if you are limited to a little or almost no way to commit yourself. There is always a way.

The only big issue has been managing muscle fatigue. I'd encourage anyone to also get a HR watch like fitbit which almost forces you to be more concious of your level of daily activity.

    yea.. that's so true tbh. im quite depressed (on antidepressants) and alcohol is my only way out when im stressed out.. but once i started workin out (quite intense 30mins on a spin bike everyday) i started to feel alot better. didnt want alcohol anymore. didnt really needed it at the first place cuz stress was almost gone. tho... other problem is keeping up with that schedule. everyday 30mins of intense cardio.. u get kinda tired and bit lazy after 2months or so. so that's my problem now. to keep constistency. tho i guess everyday isnt neccessary. i guess ppl could do like from monday to friday and then 2 days free. give me some tips how to find motivation for everyday cardio ^^ hardest thing is to make yourself commit to it after u get back from work. on work days its hella hard to find strength for those 30mins. on a weekend its a breeze tho.

    Being fit translates into every sphere of life, especially for men.
    I was forced into a long recovery when I had an open foot fracture, my muscles atrophied and I went from an athletic tall guy, to a skinny corpse like husk to the point that old friends I havent seen in years thought i was on heroin, it sucked, i was stuck doing a dead end job , and while I was surrounded by my closest and best friends I simply wasn't happy.
    About 4 years ago I took a plunge, moved cities, got away from it all, I started excercising again, eating right , got into martial arts again. I am once again strong, fast and Feel good about myself. I am working a job a love with a promotion down the line. I am more confident, have waaay better success with dating/women.....
    It's all due to the buzz, the amount of confidence you don't even realize you gain. By pushing out that extra set every other week, by getting a punch combo right that a month ago was impossible, the amazing thing about training is that if you even take an hour out of your day to do it you take a boring old day that otherwise nothing would have happened in, into a million little wins

  • @illuminaticonfirmed6019

    Inactivity causes weakness,obesity,high blood pressure, as well as aggregate cancer and many other health problems. Even some study's show that being inactive for long periods of time while having exercise done regularly won't benefit you if you work out for a while then go back to being inactive again. As you need blood circulating to be transferring nutrients for the whole day and during night have a good rest of up to 8 hours.

    From my experience exercising regularly has seemed to improve my emotion regulation. I'm usually a very anxious person but I think I spent the extra energy that could've been used to be anxious when exercising. I was a little more open with my anger as well (usually I'm pretty passive aggressive) so that didn't completely match up, but maybe it was because of higher exhaustion? Also, I did expect my emotion regulation to improve though since I already learned about its correlation with exercise so that probably influenced me as well.

    ya, definately overstress when I'm un-fit it's as though my mind tires to compensate for the lack muscle in a certain area, It seems to me that there are certain parts of the brain for certain muscles and when those muscles aren't activated, then the burden is transferred to another part of the brain which is probably the problem solving part of the brain? It sort of puts me in continuous problem solving mode and keeps me feeling uncomfortable mentally- continued mental fog perhaps, it's like not present and don't get as much done and even don't handle well- i.e by getting the urge to exercise. But things are changing. Thanks for sharing! You're a champ!

    I run 12-15 miles a week. I am legitimately addicted to it. Running promotes relaxation and better quality sleep, decreases anxiety, helps me think clearer, and obviously is a great way to burn calories. They do not call it the runner's high for no good reason, as the brain secretes endocannabinoids, similar to THC in marijuana when you run. If you are new to it than start slow, but once you live as a runner it really becomes a lifestyle.

      I believe some studies have shown the more regularly someone exercises the better their emotion regulation (ER) overall. I think "regular" exercise might differ from study to study though. To me, regular exercise would be roughly 4 days a week for at least an hour and you may need to do this for month(s) before the ER is at its best. I'm just a random youtuber though so please don't take this too seriously. Just wanted to share my thoughts.
