This man, with a cold, blows away the vast majority of tenors in their prime. My opinion, of course, but he's the greatest to me and every single time I hear him sing, I involuntarily close my eyes and feel deep, near painful emotion swelling in my chest. If that's not talent, what is?

I was 20 years old when, on an impulse, I attended a packed Melbourne Town Hall in the 1960's to this man's concert. Just one singer with one piano player and NO microphone. I was stunned at the power and purity of sound of this remarkable man's voice filling the concert hall. What a voice!

I was also 20 years old when I saw Corelli sing Tosca in Detroit in the sixties. I’ve never been the same either. To hear his musicality and high wire almost reckless heroics awed me to this day.

@@ransadeross8113 Lucky you. Corelli possessed one hugely powerful voice. The volume achieved by the top opera singers is simply amazing. In the late 1960's I attended a Lisa Minnelli concert in Melbourne, sitting at the front row, just a few feet away. At one stage her microphone cut out for some seconds. During those seconds I could not hear her voice even though she continued singing. Her voice was not powerful enough to carry over a few feet. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the young singer's concert. It just needed the microphone to be working.

Maestro Di Stefano sang naturally, and this happened just before his debut in New York - “You know, two days before my Metropolitan Opera debut, no one in America knew who I was, or where I was. I was sitting in my Manhattan hotel room with Luigi Montesanto (my voice coach), and the telephone rang. Montesanto picked up the receiver, suddenly he turned ashen, Maestro Arturo Toscanini, who had heard me sing in Italy, was on the line. After a short conversation, Montesanto said "Si, maestro, si,’ I will tell him. Grazie.’
Montesanto finally put down the telephone and said, ‘Toscanini asked
me to “tell that Sicilian boy he sings the way I like. Very simple, and
natural.” Toscanini was looking for my type of singer - - one with no affectation, no acrobatics, but one who sang directly from the heart.”

Don di Stefano, te llega hasta el alma. Muchos lo critican por que no canta exactamente lo que está escrito en la música. El interpreta lo que está cantado y sintiendo en el momento.

Is it possible for any singer to be this good, with or without a cold ? Wonderful technique, rich, warm tone, effortless singing, passionate delivery, he lived every role he played. He deserved his title "The Golden Voice". He was the tenor who inspired Jose Carreras, Pavarotti in an interview said "Di Stefano is my idol" praise indeed.

It is no wonder that Pavarotti considered DeStefano his model. they both have vocal cords that are pure muscle, comfortable handling full power-volume, and yet able to deliver subtlety, fluidity, and clarity no matter the note. It's interesting to compare this recording to Pav when young and then Pav at the Met in middle age when his voice has deepened a bit and he has more diaphragm-sustain underneath it, the latter showing how Pav hit that high note and "flowed" it over to the next note with total control, extending what DeStefano showed here. To hear two Italian tenors, in the same century with this kind of supreme natural gift, evolve from youth to maturity in the time of recording so we can hear them forever is quite a blessing.

Thank you for posting this! I could hear how he must have influenced Pavarotti.

Yes, Luciano claims that he fought with his father over who was the best tenor. The father was, according to the son a Gigli fanatic, while Luciano just loved Di Stefano. I do too.

@@williammountfield8508 Always nice to touch base with fellow admirers of the great tenors. Bjorling was amazing. And Caruso? Pavarotti described him as the foundation, the basement of the whole group of great tenors. Their success was built upon the foundation laid down by the Great Caruso.
