Basically- write to market, adhere to the genre conventions, spend money on a cover, (title and blurb), have a platform, ask for reviews, don’t expect overnight success, it’s a long distance event.

The thing I like about you Jed is that sure you do the podcast as a way of advertising your own books but you promote loads of other authors. Its not all about you, its about the community, and that's awesome

That tip of positive reviews on your youtube channel - I thought of that before, but I never considered the fact that doing THAT brings in an audience that likes the same sort of thing you're writing. That is a BRILLIANT point, Jed. Well done.

Thanks for this, Jed! One of your strengths is that you're always authentic and tell it like it is. Much appreciated.
I've received this comment from many people as well, "You're come across so authentic, how do you do that?" And I struggle to give a better answer than "You can't TRY to be authentic, that's the whole point." But as you just displayed, I think it comes down to showing your flaws, setbacks, weaknesses, being self-aware of them, and helping others learn from them.
    Cheers!

I wrote this poem for you:
As new writer, I pretty much suck,
I am a miner for luck,
    But I strive to learn
from benevolent creators like Jed Herne.
    No creator is a bible,
tough with you my writer's heart pumps more vital.
Feel free to leave constructive criticism if that poem sucked. xDDD

Also, WW&W introduced me to Peter V. Brett and The Painted Man is by far one of the best books I've read in my life. Can't thank you enough man, keep doing what you do.

This is basically how I became full time. Wrote an epic fantasy that didn't do terribly well. Then saw progression fantasy kicking ass and wrote one of those. Now I'm releasing a LitRPG by end of month to break into that market.
Finding the intersection between what we enjoy and what the market wants is the key for most of us for sure.

@@Jed_Herne the online side of you that I "know" is brilliantly geared to what you do. I think that although I've only been writing fiction for a year, my paying non-fiction work (lots of magazine articles) has improved a lot through your teaching via podcasts and just watching what you do. As well as keeping me keen on my fiction writing. I often recommend wizards warriors and words to people that aren't even into fantasy, as a great way of looking at looking at becoming known in your field while still getting something from it. Keep up the good work. So many of us want to see you succeed, you contribute a lot to the writing community.

You made a video about how much you earned from your writing in 2022. Would you be willing to share with us your total earnings from all your writings over time? I don't mean to pry but this is a topic than others shy away from and it can be difficult to learn about when so few are willing to teach, ya know?

So if I release a book expect the first to fail? And in that case should I set it up to fail? It's just hard to get excited to write something while expecting little to no one to see it

I'd say enjoy the writing process and see it as an exploratory and progressive journey rather than a story of success. DO your best, learn and apply what you learned. See how that works for you and learn on your journey. If you happen to encounter something valuable, you're always free and welcome ( and appreciated! ) to share knowledge and experience ( and reulting wisdom ) here on CZcams, on Podcasts and social Media and the internet generally. Have fun with it! That's why we do this...

Do you have any advice for marketing poetry books?

    • @SagittariusTech_
      @SagittariusTech_ Před 2 měsíci +1

Poetry books can be a bit more challenging to market than other types of books, but it's definitely doable. Just try to target specific communities of poetry readers, such as poetry clubs, writing groups, or social media groups by effectively using social media platforms. Poetry is a powerful form of expression that can connect with people on an emotional level. Use that to your advantage when marketing your poetry. You can use language that evokes emotion and imagery, and highlight the unique voice and perspective of your poetry. Hope it helps

The best-selling poet I know features his poems, and himself reading poetry, multiple times a week on Instagram. He's built a huge following and sold his poetry books to his audience that way.
