damn, this is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands...but i can’t be mad. it was creative how you managed to pull this off, and it was actually really cool when you sincerely covered the “i lost myself” section since that’s my favorite part of the song. it honestly made me think about the nature of this meme and why it’s so interesting. i just have to rant about it so bear with me...
from the ages of about 6 to 11, i unironically liked smash mouth’s “all star”. it feels goofy to compare these two songs, but i’m 22 now and ever since i heard radiohead’s “karma police” when i was about 12, it’s been one of my favorite songs ever. it’s crazy to think that i first heard that song about 10 years ago and it’s still one of my favorites.
now this year, another one of my favorite bands death grips are working with andrew adamson (one of the main creators of the shrek franchise) on their upcoming album. the shrek movies obviously helped popularize the song “all star” and they are synonymous with the meme. i saw 3 out of the 4 shrek movies growing up. i even remember being about 6 years old and seeing the first one when it had just come out.
shrek itself is a parody of fairy tales. it is essentially satirizing the self-serious “memes” of the past. memes are just ideas passed down throughout generations. this is why sincerity is the new irony (to rip off a david foster wallace quote) in my opinion because irony has become the norm. irony is a coping mechanism in the age of social media where everything instantly becomes a meme.
when you genuinely sang the “i lost myself” part, this all came to mind because you made the transcendent moment of the original song your own kind of transcendent by “breaking character” for it. it’s this authentic feeling of breaking “the simulation” that i think we all desperately crave in this increasingly technological world.
i could also just be overanalyzing a new jon sudano cover, but this one felt special to me. in any case, it is interesting watching memes develop. connecting the dots in general as you get older is strange in this modern, meta, meme existence.
p.s. jon, if you’re reading this, you should really consider releasing any kind of original work. i know we would all love to see/hear it!
