As a woman I have big arms, it just runs in the family and I cannot tell u how many blouses for work I had to pass up because they fit perfectly in the chest and stomach area but not the upper arms, so embarrassing because if u go a size up your clothes look frumpy. I don't have a machine but I can sew by hand so now I know how to fix my blouses in the future. Usually I buy solid color blouses for the office so it should be easy to find matching material.
This comment makes me happy! I hope it helps you out when altering your tops. Luckily its such a small area to fix so hand sewing shouldn't be too bad, in fact it might make sewing the corners less frustrating haha

For casual shirts, I like to add batwings to make them bigger down the entire side and arms (fave t-shirts that have been outgrown). I've never done a gusset, but it doesn't look as daunting as I thought it would. I hate my upper arms so I have learned to add a coordinating hem to short sleeve shirts and it helps tremendously. I don't know why it is so hard to find flattering shirts with 3/4 length sleeves.
I'm right there with you! My arms are not proportional to my body. I love wearing long sleeve button downs, but I have that same problem with almost every single one I try on! So glad to have a fix for this now!

That gusset fix is so useful. If you want to sew it perfectly, you can sew a couple of stitches at each of the four points of the diamond to the shirt, and then use your machine to actually sew it. That way it can't move around as much.

Yes, I agree. It’s a waste of time watching videos that have on the title what I’m looking for and end up just cutting pieces of fabric and claiming it’s done. Some of them put tape, glue and even nail polish instead of hemming it.

I made almost all my clothes in high school (1969 to 1974) and later made all of my daughters (x2) prom dresses etc.
BUT my family made it a point to leave the house while I was sewing, lol.
I'm not really a finishing sewer. I hate hand sewing, seam ripping and those little things one does to make the garment look ~ well, finished. This video reminded me of having to put a gusset in a maternity shirt 40 years ago (I'm SO old) when pregnant with my first child. I think I made six gussets for each side. It was a favourite loose shirt but my boobs and belly needed more room after my 7th month. Oh the frustration! I swore I'd never do another!

@@tryingcake101 I had home ec, and I'm only 22. We never learned how to make or alter clothes though. We only learned how to sew a button back on and fix holes. Most of it was cooking and how to set a table for fine dining with the many forks and such.
Yep, that was a time when it was way cheaper to buy fabric. Now, not so much because (well I just won’t say it).

I love watching you fix and adjust these thrift store finds! I love thrift shopping, finding treasures, but have no real idea what to do after I get home. So, thank you so much for all this awesome demonstrations, how to’s and hacks! I’ve saved hundreds and never tried a single one! My son calls me a “collector” because I love finding great thrift pieces, but they’re in a basket, waiting for some love! ❤️💜😍🐝
I'm a pretty experienced seamstress and costumer and I have to say you make an excellent tutorial. I do have a suggestion. Several adjustments you show require sewing parallel to the original seam. However, you don't make a marking to show the seam line, which works all right for those of us who have been sewing for years--but might be daunting to a novice. There's a lot of ways to mark a seam line, including chalks, pencils, tracing paper, etc. My favorite now is not a sewing notion at all, but a pen put out by the Pilot company. The model pen is called Frixion, and it comes in a lot of colors, in ball point, and in marker. Of course it's available on Amazon. The joy is that the marks vanish with heat. That means that once you've sewn your new seam while you're pressing it the marks will disappear! Now if you leave them on too long--say three or four days, they WILL become permanent and on SOME fabrics (in three years this has yet to happen to me,, I found out about it from the lady who told me about the pen) that it MIGHT leave a white spot. So, as always, TEST FIRST in a place nobody will see.
Lastly, I want to especially compliment you on the gusset tutorial. A gusset is actually one of the most difficult techniques to learn, and a lot of novices are afraid of them--if they've heard of them at all. Surprisingly, once you've figured out the first one, most people seem to be surprised that it's really not that hard--just fiddly. And oh my, what a difference a gusset can make! Bravo on de-mystifying. To your viewers reading this: I repeat that this is one of the hardest techniques to master--meaning that if you've got this one, you can tackle anything! My own instructor told me over 50 years ago this one rule: The more you fuss the better it will look. Follow the directive to take your time. You might want to practice on an old shirt you're going to be throwing away before you do it on the new one. But I promise you it works, and if you follow the directions to go S-L-O-W-L-Y and take your time, it will look GREAT!

Nice trick with the gusset - tight shoulder/upper arm is something I frequently struggle with as an athletic women.
Video idea: I‘m thinking about organizing both my clothes/shoes in general and my fabric stack/patterns with an app, to make shopping more organized/purposeful. There are quite a few around by now....and while it’ll be time consuming to take all those pictures and get the thing going, I think it‘ll be worth it longtime. I end up buying stuff I like and not stuff I need or that matches stuff I already have way too often!
Or I see a fabric I love and end up not buying it, because it’s kinda expensive and I don’t know exactly how much I would need for a given project.

Great tutorial on gussets. I remember my mom sewing gussets into certain clothes, tailored, I think, and teaching us as kids about them. I know how to do them but not sure when to use them... other than what you showed. I think they were standard fare for a little cross stretch, back when fabrics didn't have much give and styles were more structured. Your use of them is genius. Thanks for posting.

You could have used a stretch fabric for the gusset. Good demonstration though!

This tutorial helped me salvage a beautiful 3/4 sleeve dress from the thrift shop. Like you said, even if it wasn't sewn well, it ultimately solved the issue and made it so much more comfortable to wear and be able to move my arms!

These quick fixes are super helpful! My mum had actually shown me how to do invisible stitches to re-hem trousers recently, after I accidentally took out the old invisible stitches she had done on some vintage red jeans she's had for like 30 years. So useful cus I'm short and have skinny lower legs xD But the gusset part is the next bit I need to conquer!

gussets are evil!!! i had to do one for a dress for our production of the little mermaid in high school and it took me so long!!! and i just assumed it was bc i was bad at sewing, but looking at this made me realize that nope, gussets just suck to do

Oh my gosh, I absolutely LOVE your videos! I know how to sew really well but I do not have a good imagination so watching your videos gives me great ideas! Gussets have always intimidated me but after watching this I'm a lot less frightened by them. Lol. I'm also much more limited on what I can make to wear that looks good on me as I am much larger than you. (size 18). But you're so much fun to watch! Thank you for sharing your talent and I will keep watching as long as you keep posting. Also, I just have to say, my favorite transformation of yours is when you made a fall jacket out of a printed pair of paints (that has an ombre waist) and an over sized denim dress. SO CREATIVE!!!. Could you show how to turn bellbottoms or wide leg pants into straight leg or skinny pants?
Usually. (Idk how shed do it) but put them on. Have someone go down ur leg on the side and staple or pin the excess cloth together following your curves. Then use that as ur guide to sew down.
@@pirateorona92 then do a small zig zag on the edges so the fabric doesn't unravel
The other easy way you can do that is to lay them inside out and on top your favourite fitting pants, mark around them on the new pants. Dont forget to add a seam allowance, saw following the lineand Serge or zig zag the edges

I love the armpit gusset fix. I would have never thought to do that one. My granny used to stitch a triangle gusset in the center back seam of my grandads pj's and boxer underwears as his waist line got bigger!

Oh and enlarging an armhole I did for a knitted sweater that had scrunk 😳. I had to find it out myself too but also made a diamant shape. Turned out great!! Yours too !

You are a genius for the gusset idea! I just bought a nice long sleeve shirt on line, it fits me perfectly on the body, but the arm hole are super tight. I don't even have big arms. The design is off. I was going to return it, but then I thought about finding a video showing how to fix it. I am so lucky to find your video! Other videos usually require to take the sleeves off and re-cut the arm holes. That is just too much work for me. Thank you !

Great quick fixes. Learned something new regarding the gusset? Also, taking the hem to 1/4 inch between each stitch is a great recommendation. It is one I will use moving forward. I have always used a 1/2 inch and find it to catch on my heels sometimes. Thank you. More videos please.

Thank thank thank. I have this awesome rust colored short dress with an asymmetrical hem. The only thing that was wrong with it was the sleeve was too tight. Everything else about the dress fits me wonderfully. Now I can wear the dress comfortably along with my thigh-high boots. Thank you so much

I thrifted a lovely shirt a while back that ended up too small in the arms, and I was thinking of adding a gusset but after some time sitting in my project pile I ended up just tossing it back into my thrift pile to get rid of. I think now I'll try out adding a gusset! Thanks!

I am currently struggling with creating sleeves for a beautiful gown, I want to wear to two weddings. The dress came without sleeves. I took a blouse, I had, apart and I try to fit the sleeves into the armholes in a fitted way that lets me lift my arms when dancing. Not as easy as it sounds! The fabric is gorgeous and works perfectly with the rest of the dress. I might try a guesset. Not sure yet if I need one but thank you so much for the instructions! I have a better understanding of sleeves after watching this! This will help with my adjustments. Your instructions are awesome and inspiring!

Yay! I have shirts that fit me, but I have loved to transparency (and a hole or two) in the armpit area. Now I can breath a bit more life into them. I will also give this a try on a thrifted shirt that I would normally pass on because of the arm fit. I have had to give a pass on many in the past, but now I don't need to! 😊
