      @@Snugggg you can etch glass if you use certain paints but it won't cut past the paint layer and I would assume clear acrylic is the same. Cheers J

      He also changed it evidenced over his 20 more years of his published research as he learned it wasn't alkali metal like potassium, sodium, and so on.
      Regardless there is a youtube maker on another channel that said it best, " English is not my first language. Aluminum... Aluminium they both suck. We should come together and decide on a better name." I can never say it better myself. Once I can think of who it was I'll follow this comment up. I hope someone beats me to it.

      It's the same a solder -
      Etymology of "Solder":
      1. Latin Origins:
      The word "solder" traces its roots back to the Latin term "solidare," meaning "to make solid." This Latin word evolved into "sudare" in Late Latin, which translates to "to solder" or "to sweat."
      2. Old French Influence:
      During the Middle Ages, Old French incorporated the term as "souder," which meant "to join together by melting." This usage referred to the process of joining metals by melting another material with a lower melting point, creating a bond.
      3. English Adoption:
      In the English language, "solder" emerged around the 14th century, retaining its meaning of joining metals through fusion. (obvious the USA did exist in the 14th century) It's Pronounced across the free world as solder, everywhere in fact except the USA which pronounces it as soder.
      Interestingly 'Sod' is derived from 'sodomy' a reference to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible and is seen as an unforgivable sin by all Christians.

    When i see the treadle powered sharpening / sanding apparatus which you made, i can imagine if persons such as yourself would make a few batches of kits which a viewer could purchase or receive as a gift for making a donation, it would be appealing because i am not yet in a position to aquire the laser machine, yet i am i interested in adding certain beneficial tools to my crafting shop.

    Great video. Some additional info for you. The infrared laser has a pulsed output, and the blue laser has a continuous wave output. Pulsing the laser compresses power in time to generate a considerably higher peak output power, quite possibly in the low kilowatt range. The IR module probably use a passive Q switch to generate the pulse, creating a fixed-frequency pulse output.
    CO2 lasers typically have a wavelength of around 10,600 nm, compared to the IR laser's wavelength of 1064 nm.

    Not many laser guys think about master jigs/templates, but they can make it easier for small production runs for those that like hand held power tools. A router table with templates also takes less room and is much cheaper than a big cnc wood router or laser. Wonder how much faster, hand/template V CNC router V Laser?

    Honestly, you should have built something similar, except power it with a cordless drill and a cabled foot switch. Easier to set up, use and store. Cool video with great camera work and cinematics.
    Thanks for the tips, I've learned a lot from this video alone- I am especially liking the beveling tool and primer on multi-pass burning.

    Thank you for the meticulous and thorough demonstration of laser engravers and cutters. The demonstration of the 40W blue laser module versus the 30W IR laser module really has me thinking. Some very interesting prototyping applications come to mind...such as creating custom flexible ribbon cables for better cable management for CNC, Laser Engraver/Cutters, and 3D printing machines. Hmmm.

    I just got a 10 watt sculpfun s30 pro with the 900x900mm extension kit. I am blown away by the level of precision I'm getting with it- I really didn't expect this after doing Months of research and watching just about every laser video on YT. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like these lower powered lasers can do more precise burns than many of the Videos I've seen- most videos are of the 22 or 30 watt models though so that might be why. I wish I'd gotten into this a lot sooner- I've not been interested in anything for Years now, but somehow this is relieving that insane itch- really loving this stuff! I can't wait to build my first CO2 laser- was initially going to before settling on a 10 watt diode for learning- mainly I just didn't want to build it on a super tight budget- really didn't want budget headaches when trying to design/build the thing. Great video! Sub earned :D

    Hi, watched your 40w laser videos, these are all great I love the way you incorporate projects it makes for even more interesting viewing.
    Which of the following have the quietest module.
    Xtool D1 40w
    Longer B1 40w
    Creality Falcon 40w
    Sculpun 40w (dont think you tested that one)
    I know it appears an unusual criteria but I have neighbours to consider. Using atomstack x30 at the moment and they cannot hear Me working on the outdoor terrace wish to keep it that way, lovely people

      I would encourage you not to buy one because it's quiet but because it's loud instead. My reasoning is because you want the most powerful fans to cool the laser head. Without proper cooling the diodes will wear out and lose power over time. So I would instead invest in quality sound proofing (and fire proofing) around the laser and go for the creality falcon2 40w for power, quality and price. All the very best. Cheers J

      @@joshuadelisle Very kind of you to reply. Yes, I was considering an enclosure , not needed to vent but solely for the noise factor. Some of the exhaust fans are noisey aSo I may build My own and use a quiet Infinity Model or buy an enclose and swap the fan.

    What you need is torque, the hand crank needs the lever mounted further from centre to allow the relatively week human arm to generate more torque to allow the sanding grit to cut through the steel blade. Unfortunately that also means the pad will spin slower which slows metal removal and eventually you'll realise it doesn't suit. Secondly the foot pedals are of the same issue. You need a longer stroke on the pedals for transfer of force and longer leverage differential. The solution was discovered hundreds of years ago and used extensively, it's called a flywheel. Input small amounts of energy to the flywheel that stores the energy for a short time release or to average impulse energy inputs to average the energy release. Think of the blacksmiths sharpening stone wheel, massive weight and once the inertia of the spinning stone was up the inputs of the human were averaged so the smith could grind against a constantly rotating wheel or sacrifice most of the wheel energy in grinding away a lump with short hard push of the work piece into the wheel. You need to implement a flywheel

      Hi. It's all working great and I've spent the time getting the correct transmission ratio. The mdf wheel also acts as the fly wheel for the sanding pad. It's very comfortable to use with just the right amount of speed to torque ratio. Cheers J

    Before anyone bashes me, could you flip the piece over and cut again. I know it would be hard to get the kerf to match up, but in a jig, it could be done

      You can but it is very difficult to get perfect alignment. The beam is only 0.08-0.1mm in most cases. With CNC routers and mills you can create reference points and holes for pins. Not really a thing with lasers though. Cheers J

    Peculiar behaviour of the IR on perspex, i would say it "SHOULD" engrave it, so i would sugest maybe try on another cast acrylic of sorts.

    IR laser and non ferrous right in my interest zone. The lower 2W power might make it suitable for my 3018. I will be watching for more of these IR ones popping up for others. Black Delrin cutting, I CNC mill that but need more precision?

      It's awesome what it can do and I bet it would be very handy to have one on the 3018 mill if you have one. I not sure on Delrin or kydex as vaporizing plastics can be very dangerous especially ones with chlorine like PVC as the gasses are deadly. Cheers J

    Nice review! Will this IR laser actually cut any thin sheet metals, foils, shim stock, copper circuit boards etc. I'd like to have a laser to do maybe up to .060-.080" . Any suggestions? Laser tech is getting better very quickly but anymachine that will cut even thin metals are still very expensive. Thanks!

      I already own an Xtool laser and like it. It is 20 watts blue light but it won't do thin metals even if coated with blacking or paint. FYI Also I sell Industrial Orange Gel Cutoff Filter sheets and can gel Deep green ones too to block out the UV/Blue for building your own enclosure view windows. (Orange ones allow much better viewability) Trying to find a good way to market them. They are 24x18 inches and I sell them for $40.00 each, 2 for $35.00 each. Much cheaper than buying a pc of Acrylic filter sheet. Where can I send you one to try out - free?? @@joshuadelisle

    I would like to see you laser engrave-cut an ostrich egg. Start with chicken eggs then try hummingbird eggs then go for the ostrich egg. You will need to make a horizontal rotary table and interface it with the software.

      I've got a whole spectrum. Steam engine, gasifier, diesel heater upgrades, 3D printers, CNC routers, metal sculptures, forged green wood working tools but also lots of lasers. Unfortunately I don't have as many people interested in the metal work side which makes it difficult but the raffle is helping to fund those projects when I get to them. Cheers J

    Though maybe a tad out there, but I'd be interestd if youd be able to produce the majority of the parts for something like a loom or a spining wheel with cutting lasers, probably could, only major issue would be dimensions i suppose...

      I would recommend any that are certified by British standards and are the correct wave length. Which one specifically I'm still trying to find out myself. I bought a few and ended up sending them back because I'm just not 100% confident in them and the companies kept sending the wrong wave length I requested. Cheers J

    I’d love to use the infrared laser to engrave a engine builder logo in some mirror polish cast aluminium rocker covers.
    Does the laser’s ability lesson with mirror polished aluminium?
    I know mirror polished aluminium absorbs the least amount of infrared energy from our Sun.
    Polished aluminium stays cooler then the whitest white.🤯🤯🤯

      Hi. I would assume the more polished then the less the laser can etch efficiently but you can add a black marker pen/fine paint that can be washed off to help the laser I guess. That's what you do to etch on glass from what I know. Worth a test for sure. Cheers J

      Hi thank you for the link I decided to go with the Longer 30w with all the extra bits and got a discount of $80 dollars which then brought it down to under $1000 dollars, with the exchange rate ended at £801. So thanks again

    Hi Joshua, i am loving the videos. I am new to all this laser engraving but have been 3D printing for a few years, and as black Friday is in 2 days , what 20w engraver would you recommend ?

      Thank you. The Falcon2 is a fantastic quality machine and gives you the option to upgrade to other laser modules later down the line. If the budget is tight then the Comgrow Z1 pro is still a very good machine and will do the job.

    You said gravity generator. I've got a design for use of gravity generators. The world isn''t short of things you could hang on a grav. gen.. The trick is how to keep it running without having to interact with it, and without it having to use it's own power to reload it. It's hard to tell someone about something when they're not interested. I have an idea.

      No I don't, and it would take a little more room to explain it. I'm not a crazy that needs attention, but I don't know how to tell you more. If you have a suggestion that'd be great, cause I've never done this before.

    I've been hemming and hawing about getting a CNC laser, but really wanted to do cutting with it, and until recently that meant getting a $$$ CO2 laser and I just wasn't up to being that committed all in one go. Suddenly these bigger, especially the 40W laser modules have come out... and I need one.
    What is your recommendation for someone that that's kind of a noob and doesn't really know what they're going to do with it? Most of what I do is either automotive machining/fabrication (I have a Bridgeport, lathe, welders, Crossfire Pro plasma, a couple of 3d printers...) or I also invariably end up doing artsy stuff with all this.
    I watched your Falcon 2 review and had a "I need that," reaction but then saw your Comgo Z1 video and had the "I can spend less than half on the Z1 Pro, it comes with lightburn (it's not clear if any of the others do, just that they are supported), get a bigger capacity and maybe upgrade the head." Your D1 review didn't do anything for me, but this Longer 40W setup... wow, slightly more capacity, and it's still at black Friday prices....
    Help, I'm overwhelmed! Seems like the Falcon 2 is the most expensive, the Z1 Pro the cheapest but I suspect I might not be happy with it till I upgrade the head, and the Longer 40w might be the middle ground, should be able to do everything that the Falcon 2 can but at least in your videos didn't look as well built.

      Hi. Thank you. Personally once you've tried the 40w versions you'll not want to go back to a 20w than less you want to engrave fine details. A 100w+ CO2 laser is going to be a lot better still, however the benefit of the light weight diode versions means they can be placed on top of large boards and then hang on the wall when not in use. You want to consider safety though, the laser needs to be treated like a welding machine except instead of arc eye you go blind. The fine particulates from the vaporized material are also very bad for you so extraction is necessary. The CO2 versions come with complete safety features. The falcon2 is definitely well made and is my preferred version so far of the ones I've tested. I've still got a lot more to test next year though lol. All the very best. Cheers J

      ​@@joshuadelisle Thanks for the reply. What makes you choose the Falcon 2 over the 40W B1? I've been comparing specs and at least by the advertising blurb the B1 seems to match or exceed the Falcon 2 in every way except the adjustable light beam. The B1 also has additional interface methods, and I'm also having a hard time ignoring that for the price of the Falcon 2 I can get the B1 and the extension kit giving it 850mm capacity, however, I don't know what that does for accuracy and how the 2 compare to start with.
      OTOH, you've used both and could speak to if one's specs are more realistic and or if one is just much better build quality or otherwise just better than the other. Or if there is a 3rd engraver/cutter that I should consider.
      I'm hoping to make my decision and place my order by the end of the week.

      @@mpikas they're both very good for the reasons you said. The Falcon2 is very good build quality in comparison. The B1 is bigger and an extension kit is ideal.
      To be honest you'll not be disappointed with either.
      There were less niggles/things that could be improved with the Falcon2 I thought.
      The B1 is probably the best value.

    Great testing and making! I would like to use such a laser to mark streets on a terrain relief map (3D CNC carved first). Can you install a motorized Z axis for the laser or do you even need that, if the focus has such a long reach? The terrain map would have a total depth of 20-50mm.     Now my complaining. I have looked at every 40W lasers - ALL of them have some brain dead engineering decisions (that didn't need to happen).
    You point out one right away.... where the cables are on the front....
    No way in hades would I buy that.

      Engineers are likely only used on the electronics and laser modules, while cheap throwaway labor is used to design the frames and such. But who knows? ;)
