  • Westinghouse 4500 generator has a problem with the choke not working which is due to a wire harness not connected. This is a really easy fix. But this shouldnt be left to the customer to fix unless you want to try it yourself which is not that hard.
    Hope this video helps.

    Just made a purchase on 6/1/2021 from Home Depot not sure of the manufacture date but when i when and started the 4500 it ran real rough, I searched and found the chock, flipped it open and it ran smooth. So fast forward to this CZcams vid it made me check on the connection for the auto chock and sure enough not plugged in, went through the steps to plug in and like magic it now starts and runs smoothly, Thanks Johnny Weekend. PS there is no reason for this to have to be done by the purchaser this is POOR workmanship in you know where, I need not say any more.

      You just wasted lots of money! Unless you can fix every problem that will happen down the line, you’re going to be paying a ton to get it worked on… These things are so compact and plasticy you won’t have a choice. Better to buy Briggs & Stratton or perhaps a Honda.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před rokem +1

      Lol oh here we go. Briggs running same China motors and Honda trying to deny every warranty claim they get.
      Now Hondas are great but I have tons of feedback from thousands of respondents that have thousands of hours on other generators besides Honda.
      Honda is loosing by not dropping there price and still have the same issue any generator can have.
      I have owned Honda and still own two.

    • @diehardfan173
      @diehardfan173 Před rokem +1

      Do you know Briggs & Stratton that sold out to China? However, there, old stuff is still good… I’ve worked on these and several others, Briggs & Stratton, Cummings that came through were monsters! Only problem, was finding parts…

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před rokem

      The old stuff is die hard stuff and still runs the stuff from like 2008 or so till about 2018 seem to be just thrown together. But it seems some items may be getting back to a little more quality.
      It’s hit and miss.
      Even Honda is starting to have China put together stuff from them which who knows if they are using parts that are also cheaper.
      Like there cars lately, just getting worse and worse

    I purchased my igen4500DF for a travel trailer on 5-20-21. It would start right up. It always ran rough. I thought that was normal for this generator. I'd turn on the air conditioner, & within a couple minutes ac would shut off & then the generator would die. It would not restart until the next day. Saw your video, took apart the whole generator & sure enough the choke wiring harness was not connected. Connected the wire harness & what do you know worked perfectly. Took me a lot longer than 10 minutes. being 100+ degrees & senior female doing all this by myself, but your video did the trick. No thanks to Westinghouse support, they opened a case # & said someone would email me.

      If not it could be the low speed idle jet. They plug so easy and is a common problem on a lot of the generators as they all use almost the same few carburetors.

    Sir. You were 100% right on. Took delivery on Monday and I was ready to return this to the store! Opened it up per your instructions and there was the unplugged plug. I can't believe this came loose in transit, because I tugged on it a few times before I closed it up and it won't come off. So it begs the question - who is the dolt at the factory leaving this unplugged? Obviously there is no pre-shipment QA in this factory! Or worse yet, someone is deliberately sabotaging the product internally. Wake up Westinghouse!!!

    Thanks a lot for this video. It saved me from having to return the generator. I have a couple of suggestions for the procedure. On the initial (left hand) panel removal the lower left screw is extremely tight - I wasn't able to loosen it with a Phillips screwdriver. But this one also has a hex head, so a ratchet and 10mm socket did the trick. I also recommend postponing removal of the instrument panel and proceeding to loosening the right hand panel to locate the receptacle. In my case I found the choke wire/plug already routed to within 2 inches of the receptacle, so it was fairly easy to plug it in (should have happened at the factory), and I actually would not have needed to open the front panel or do any rerouting. Your case may be different of course, and you might need to remove the front panel to find the wire.
    I really like this generator and am very happy with it's performance after this fix. But like others in this same boat, I'm disappointed in Westinghouse for not successfully addressing this problem. I guess it's a training or quality control issue, but a name brand like Westinghouse should not be putting out an incompletely assembled product. Really unacceptable.
    Thanks again for the solution, Johnny! Much appreciated.

    Great video! I wondered how those worked. I have a new Westinghouse 9500 generator! It will not start without ether! I had a Koehler motor on a Cub cadet zero turn mower that never started without ether. That Koehler motor was trash in 5 years. Well thanks for this video.. I picked up a Igen4500 last year around this time for summer months when my camper at camp ,AC runs 24/7 here in FL. So that we can also run a full size fridge to keep the wife happy at camp... 158 hours no issues and then it would take 5-10 min to get it running. Once running it would run fine. Tore it apart after watching this video and sure enough it had unplugged... Plugged it back in and put a bead of silicone on top and bottom hoping it will hold... Westinghouse really shit the bed with this gen. For 1 there is not a inch of extra wiring so its sorta pulling on the plug. A slight wiggle and it pops off.. Appreciate the video def helped me figure it out in less time. I knew it had to be the auto choke. I hate auto chokes... Nothing like a old school lever/pull choke.

    Thanks for your video. It got me familiar with the choke lever and the wiring harness. I was having the same issue as you in that it would start and run for a few seconds and stop. Then it would not start at all. My wiring harness was intact, however. I moved the choke manually and it would start again but only run for a few seconds. After manually moving the choke 3 more times, it started and kept running. After that, it began to start normally and the choke was automatically moving. I'm guessing my choke lever was stuck. Without your video, I would not have found the choke lever. Thanks for saving me a lot of frustration. ( NOTE: I bought this generator 2 years ago and broke it in using gasoline and let it run to empty. After break-in, I have only powered it with propane until I tried gasoline recently.)

    Thank you so much for your video! Thought I'd posted several months ago, but don't see it now reading thru the replies. Had this exact problem with my iGen4500 right out of the box back in July. Your video saved me A LOT of troubleshooting time. Plugged it together & it ran like a champ.
    Since then I've had two other separate problems. Both in unfortunate times when I really needed the generator:
    First was about three weeks ago, with about 75 hours on the genny. Had it running when suddenly began running rough. Figured it was a fuel/carb/choke issue again, so I pulled that panel. As I moved the choke linkage, I saw the electronics bolted on top were loose. Then I saw a bolt & a 1/4" long spring in the bottom of the genny case. Turning the throttle linkage, I saw another of the bolts was completely unscrewed and everything was loose. I had to pull that cover off and unscrew it all in order to figure out where the spring belonged. I tried calling Westinghouse tech support to see if there was any specific alignment for reassembly. What a joke! Just a call center where they take your info and maybe someone will contact me sometime. My guesses for reassembly worked & I made sure the bolts were tightened down. Genny ran well for several more nights.
    Last Tuesday I stopped for the night to boondock at a Sam's Club. The batteries on my 5er are at least 2 years old & I suspected in need of replacement. I ran the genny to level out the 5er and got one of the slides out before I noticed the genny wasn't providing any power. The overload LED was NOT lit, but I remember resetting the circuit breakers. The "ready" LED didn't come on. I've pushed all the resets, shut everything down, disconnected the battery..., but I can't get the genny to produce power. The engine runs smoothly. I pulled off the front panel but don't notice anything specifically unusual. There is a (female?) connector with a red & a black wire that isn't connected to anything. And above the infamous choke wires, there is a tan wire with #4 label that isn't connected to anything. Nothing in either area that these look like they should be connected to.
    Any ideas?
    Tech support is non-existent. Got a case # assigned Tuesday night. No call backs. When I called again today (Friday) & followed the prompts for an existing case #, the operator confirmed I have an open case but said it hasn't been reviewed yet and there was nothing she could do to elevate it. Good thing it isn't an emergency!

      Thanks for the comment and glad I could the first time around.
      For the new problem and with our being there it’s hard to really tell except some basics things to look for.
      Obviously the breakers…
      The power cord that connects to the inverter board. It will have the biggest plug and thickest wires. Make sure it’s pushed in all the way. And check for frayed wires
      Maybe try a 120 plug to see if any power there.
      Also check oil level is all the way full which most times this will be a run or no run thing. But best to check the basics.
      Also did the generator get wet.???
      Hope this gives ya something to check.

In my case (now that I know what I'm looking for), I can see it engage the choke and start up, but then it inexplicably opens the choke all the way, causing it to run rich, sputter and eventually stall. My problem is related to the choke but it is different. It starts but then rough or stalls. I checked all wires are connected properly. The choke seems to work properly as you describe. Once the motor starts the choke moves to the clockwise position that you show as making the generator work properly. For my machine however it begins to run rough at that moment and I have to rotate it about 90 degrees counter clockwise, but not all the way, and then it runs properly. Any ideas?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 2 lety

      Yes!!! It’s been a common problem on some new generators that once ran and shut off from the factory they can sit for a while. And the fuel will not take long to crystallize in the small jet. It’s super small and plugs very easy.
      So if it runs rough after starting and won’t run right but when you manually operate the choke it runs better, it means you are adding more fuel to the mixture and less air. So then it runs a little better. This pretty much let’s you know the low speed circuit is plugged and not getting enough fuel at low rpm.

      You will want to clean the low speed jet.
      They plug so easy that most of the time that is the issue.
      The low speed jet sits close to where the choke lever actuates.
      It’s black and sits flat. Looks like a black Philip screw.
      Sometimes a carb bolt may be in the way and it may have to be lossened or removed.
      That small black plastic jet lifts straight out and is only held in with a oring.
      A very small flat head can work or very thing small clamp to lift it up.
      Once it’s out you need to shine a light thru it and see. If plugged which it probably is you need a very thin wire to poke thru it.
      Or very very small needle. You don’t want to make the hole bigger or it will damage the original size of the jet making it bigger causing a rich condition or make it run worse overall at low speeds and idle.
      Let me know if this helps.

      @@johnnysweekends I may have misspoke. It moves back and on startup it goes about half way then it wants to go fully forward. At that point it died many times until I stopped it from moving forward and let it run for a bit. Then after about 30-60 seconds it would stay running. It did run u and down "hunting for a stable idle. Once I put a load on it smoothed out. I changed the gas to fresh added seafoam to the gas and after running it more it will start from cold and stay running now. Still a little rough idle until it loads up but I plan on more thoroughly cleaning the carb. Hopefully that makes it good as new again.

      Editorial comment: In a certain sense this speaks to the
      hollowing-out of the US & Canada's consumer products industrial base
      due to "globalization", which has moved hundreds of thousands if not
      millions of jobs from North America, primarily to China and SE Asia.
      This is the bargain that was made for us in exchange for "cheap
      stuff" and ready markets for our socialized (e.g. taxpayer-subsidized) agricultural export sector. Keep in mind that in effect the US taxpayer, through agricultural support payments, is supporting the Chinese hog farmers with our subsidized feed grains, among others. And then they ship us meth, fentanyl (cheap heroin), and "bath salts" (cheap cannabis substitute) to ease the pain of irrelevance, all while the wealth/net worth and real income gaps in N. America grow exponentially for the past 40 years. One need not be a snowflake libtard to suspect that here is some cause-and-effect going on here.
