Fantasy High: Junior Year, Season 3, Dimension 20, Dropout
Episode 9
Brennan Lee Mulligan, Ally Beardsley, Lou Wilson, Emily Axford, Brian Murphy, Siobhan Thompson, Zac Oyama
Dungeons and Dragons
This is possibly the hardest Brennan has ever had to railroad them just to finish his bit, the fact that the payoff was so simple killed me
He was genuinely desperate to do everything possible to make them not party wipe for a bit because HE WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED THROUGH ON THE THREAT
I feel like the intense shutting down of shenanigans was entirely part of the bit. The only foe that could ever fell this particular group is simply telling them "no", and that foe is named The Vulture King.
I do think it would even qualify as railroad. It just elsewhere in FH Brennan would normally allow any ridiculous non-sensical shenanigans they come up with
Um, Actually railroading is when the DM forces the players along a prepared storyline regardless of players' choices depriving them of agency. What Brennan did was enforce the rules of the Vulture King's court and make them honor their choice to answer simultaneously.
Like the MBMBAM bit with Justin and his egg joke! Justin even clarified it wasn’t that funny 😂
This was all 100% a Monty Python skit. And I'm all for it.

"FIVE IS RIGHT OUT"
“There’s a vulture on the telly…”
This is like the king of the swamp castle trying to get a simple order through the constantly misunderstanding guard.
"Who approacheth the bridge of death must answer me these questions three"
the fact that Ally initially agreed that only one person should answer, but when they put it to a vote Ally immediately raised their hand for simultaneously
Ally is here to cause problems not solve them

the vulture reveal and the riddle reveal was fucking hilarious the haters just don't have enough whimsy and silliness in their lives
Personally, after getting called girlie by some random stranger who's offering me bread, I too would also throw them into my own personal realm with my buddies back home and force them to answer a riddle with any of their friends simultaneously AND unanimously.
...Brother?
This comments reminds me of the way people argue now, not wanting to see that there are other opinions that can be just as, if no more, valid than their own: “well, if you don’t agree with me you’re a nazi” 😂
I liked the riddle, but i’d argue that what you said can be turned around. If you found this riddle and the reveal “hilarious” then you don’t have enough whimsy and silliness in your life (like someone eating a McDonald’s burger and saying it’s the best burger they ever had, they just haven’t had much to compare it to) 😂
What is that gravity zero guy yapping about?
@@GravitasZeroPersonally, I think you're wrong. Saying someone isn't "silly or whimsical" is not the same as calling someone a "nazi". This should not be hard to understand.
I love Emily saying "a crisp $500 bill," something that is not used as currency in the world of Fantasy High, or in the real world either.
In the real world, it was a thing and is still used as legal tender but has been discontinued from production
@@musicsaves71590so it sounds like it’s not really used anymore
@@musicsaves71590that probably makes it even more valuable, like coin collecting
My country has 500$ bills but they are worth 100 USD, give or take a few cents.
I will firmly believe that this was Monopoly money.
“I don’t know, man.”
This bit is perfect
Its an incredibly Zac-adjacent bit, which makes it so much better that it completely breaks Zac.
When a DM doesn’t usually railroad and then proceeds to make the most railroady bit it is HILARIOUS. This absolutely lives up to Emily’s “we don’t make it cute, but we do make it stupid”
What a perfect way to explain this entire season and I love it so much
Is it railroading though? Kristen chose to mess with the vulture, now they are being forced to follow the rules of the vulture dimension, doesn’t seem like railroading to me
It isn't railroading. It's called explaining the rules in a kingdom.
@darrienjones8917 you have a poor understanding of what railroading means.
@YMasterS If you think this is railroading, then you actually have a poor understanding of it. People need to stop using that for things that aren't really railroading. They locked in, he is holding them to their choices, and then the king explained the rules. That's not railroading. That is the king explaining why the other stuff can not work. In character, no less.
Brennan wasn't kidding on the adventuring party. The morality of the vulture dimension really is aligned on the axis of more or less vulture.
The insane, comical strictness of this bit makes it so much more funny
my favorite thing about this bit (besides the all of it) is how brennan starts with a unique character voice and then as the bit continues he just sloooowly goes back to regular brennan voice
the NO after can we take a deep breath is so funny to me
Brennan is like " THIS IS MY BIT. I HAVE ENDURED GIRLIES AND HILDAS APLENTY."
Also, a thing I have come to realise, is that this WAS a miracle that Kristen performed. By summoning the Vulture King, and getting them all to the Vulture Dimension, she managed to get three of her party members out of being stunned. Which is what led them all to being saved. It WAS a miracle, just a very weird one. It even got them some magical items! It was just a miracle that felt like a fever dream and made them all doubt their sanity, which, well, follows the nature of doubt. Even if it's slightly absurd and made me keel over with laughter.
I can't wait for her to pledge herself to the Vulture King, then immediately do nothing with it until it dies.
@@glenndallas7171 Brutal but 100% accurate. Though since ep 9 of JY Kristen's gotten some actual character development
Some of those magical items ended up being super helpful (combined with some more useful items)
Gorgug's "what are we playing for?" had big Lilly Du energy.
"The consequences of my actions have caught up to me: the campaign"
Not if Ally has anything to say about it!

Yes, that was very silly, but that's perfectly appropriate for the whole "vulture" thing. It has been very silly from the start.
1:54 For anyone who ever doubted that Murph is Riz and Riz is Murph.
I've never related to anything more than Gorgug saying "I'm just happy to be dead and not at that party anymore"
Watching this in real time, all I could think was "Brennan really had to tap into his latent camp counselor energy for this one" XD
Lining up for my "Vultures: yea or nay?" shirt
I genuinely thought the joke was going to be that he was going to give them the Trolley Problem
There are no vultures in the trolled problem
Regardless of outcome, the Vulture wins the trolley problem.
No trolleys in the Vulture Dimension, they don't really need them.
Vulture moral quandaries rest on questions considering numbers of birds per quantity of stone.
Its so wild that this episode started this way and ended with major plot movement
I’m stealing the Vulture King voice. Nothing like creating a chaotic eldritch god and giving them the goofiest, most pedantic voice possible.
Its similar the ratking from unsleeping cory
this episode starting with VULTURE DIMENSION and ending with the body of a murdered kid is the real d20 whiplash
People are actually hating on this? This was hilarious, like a substitute teacher trying to get a class full of children to complete a puzzle
So much buildup for a four word “riddle,” I just wanna be clear, it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life

Honestly thought this was gonna be a big battle but neat to see they got some sweet items
Only if they didn't answer unanimously at the same time.

Simultaneously, with everyone giving the same answer.
Loved that Brennan called them on the message shenanagins, PCs love to act like its this perfectly subtle spell but you literally have to pull out some copper wire, say magic words, point to someone, then (from others perspective) mouth your message, and the Vulture King is just standing in front of you watching you not answer immediatly and in unison 😂

Truly the only way such a ridiculous bit could end lmao, such focus and serious consideration regarding something simple and stupid, RIPs Vulture King
They barely reacted to the fact that the vulture king just killed himself after they answered correctly. One of the wildest things Brennan has ever implemented mid combat
I mean it isn't exactly the first time they have seen someone kill themselves.

There was so much work put into such a small bit and it was 100% worth it. Everyone involved deserves a raise 😂

God this was so much fun. This season is just hilarious and anxiety-inducing because I know it's gonna hit where it hurts. I would not have D20 any other way.
To anyone else who feels the same way, take Boggy the Froggy with you before you scroll down. There's some vapidity and entitlement making rounds but it's best not to feed the troll.
I was fucking losing it this whole time
I did not clock ally doing a full 180 on simultaneous answering
brennan removed loopholes from existence due to stress.
All the vulture king really wanted was some non-vulture friends to liven things up a bit, i guess
The thumbnail looks like Brennan playing the most terrifying accordion I’ve ever seen
Screw you, take my life.
the fact they spent so long trying to find any possible loop hole made the fact the riddle was so simple infinitely funnier
pure gold
This may have sold me on watching D20. This bit alone is gold.
Ally being incredibly defiant on "1 answer it's Riz" 1:32 then immediately voting simultaneously took me ouuut
This was one of my favorite bits of the season so far
I love how ally voted wrong then realized what they did when murph started yelling lol the one time ally wanted to do the sensible thing instead of the silly thing and they voted wrong accidentally 😅😂
I want everyone to know that a battle for this did exist. If the players got the riddle wrong, they would have fought the vulture king and his minions.
The vulture dimension won me over. I wasn't onboard at the end of the previous episode, but it won me over.
I was so nervous the moment they said they would answer all at the same time. I swore someone was gonna either fuck up accidentally or on purpose for the bit 😂
Ok so glad everything was okay in the end
this is peak d20 i must say
That was absolutely hilarious!
The Vulture King has big Lemongrab energy and I am here for it.
I've started saying, "YOU HAVE ENTERED THE VULTURE DIMENSION!!!" at every opportune moment. Granted, there aren't that many opportune moments, but when it comes, I hit it as hard as I can.
This is just "players are like herding cats" DM trauma the video
I feel like in this moment the vulture king and Brennan the DM became one
I was yay for vultures before the vulture dimension. If you ever walked beside a vulture you know they are so funny man.
I Love watching Dimension 20 for its silliness,
But if i were DMing for this group i would have gone insane and given up like 1 session in.
1:38 not Ally being the hardest support for Riz to vote and then putting their hand up immediately for "who wants to vote for simultaneous?" 😂 what a turncoat lmao
I'm surprised no one told the Vulture King that, that wasn't much of a riddle
The intrepid heroes: *doing advanced calculus* Brennan: heheheh
PCs do be acting like PCs.
my favourite subplot to this bit is kristen trying to get fabian to kiss the vulture king 😭😭
God it's almost like they're all about to go skydiving together and they had to pack the parachutes lmao
just, the fact, that they PREDICTED THAT ALLY WAS GOING AFTER THE VULTURE! THEY COULD NOT HAVE KNOWN THEY WOULD DO THAT!
Imagine if answering yay meant more vultures
So much effing buildup for a multiple choice 🤣🤣
Fig kissed the vulture king and that's not even in the top 5 wildest things that happened here
My biggest question would be what if they said later to the riddle, would brennen just wait
It’s not the vulture that will destroy them if they take a breath, it’s fully Brennan
After years and riz is still The Ball
why does the vulture sound like donald trump
I've been disappointed in D20 before, like I don't think A Crown of Candy really delivers on its impetus-- sometimes an improv comedy show can struggle to appropriately provide comentary on things like violence and war-- but this bit is literally peak Fantasy High. Brennan didn't want to kill his players over the vulture bit. He wanted to give them a scare and mess with them a little. People who want Fantasy High to be 100% serious all the time don't get the point of D20 in the first place. It's a comedy show. Investigating vultures has been a ridiculous bit since season one.
Riddle should’ve just been yes, or no
This is really dumb.
no it's very cool. have you ever seen a vulture? theyre very cool
exactly, its fun
So wat
This is the same group of people that started the top hat fairy bit an episode before the final episode of a campaing, and kept said bit going on as they delt with something seemingly world ending, goofy movie references and all. So this always was (at least a tiny bit) possible.
how are there gonna be people with such incorrect opinions 💀
I admit that I'm starting to get a little annoyed by everyone's commitment to "let's all do the silliest, most-likely-to-get-us-killed option because it's funny to us, and whether or not we get TPK'd is the DM's problem, not ours." Brennan might as well go ahead and let them all die next time it goes like this, then wrap the season up early.
Back in the day, it used to be just Emily being like that, but now they're all constantly trying to "out-chaos" each other at the same time all the time. If they don't give a shit about the stakes or the plot, then why should I?
I had the same issue with EXU 1, by the way.
Maybe this season just isn't for you lol
Brennan has no qualms with outright murdering the party. Neverafter and Calamity are proof.
they put seven professional comedy writers in a dome and you're mad that they're making jokes
On top of the other comment pointing out how this is a game being played by improv comedians (which for the record, are great friends) so they’re going to goof off (especially since it’s literally the comedy season), but…
You know Brennan literally wanted this, right? Like there’s a set, minis, animations, so it was planned.
In the adventuring party for the previous episode, he admits to putting the vulture there on the battle map as a trap.
He literally sets Ally up to interact with the vulture by pointing out how their choice of actions wouldn’t do much at the moment, and even hints towards the vulture which makes the players think the vulture's purpose is now to help the players get out of this rough battle they’re in (also mentioned in the adventuring party).
The players did not do this (at least, not entirely) because "haha this’ll be goofy and funny, who cares about consequences". Their DM gave them hints, that they followed. The one doing the silliest option here, is Brennan.
Plus, imo I wouldn’t say the original Fantasy High was more serious. In fact I’d wager the only reason it’s not as goofy is because everyone was learning the system. Keep in mind that prior to Fantasy High, the players and Brennan either hadn’t played D&D at all or had played 3.5 but not 5th Edition. They were more focused on learning the game than throwing the bits.
You have a group of 7 highly trained improv comedians who are all close friends and you DON'T expect their shenanigans?
I'm gonna say it. Most disappointed I've ever been towards a D20 production.
really? out of any other D20 season? can I ask why?
Get sent to the vulture dimension
It did feel a bit corny, but this stuff happens all the time at D&D tables. Brennan does his best to keep the story moving along & the jokes to a minimum during high stakes moments. But for this season out of all the other seasons I think the callback & a little reassurance that it’s okay to not be 100% serious 100% of the time was much needed.
anybody who wanted a whole ass new battle doesn't understand that this is the culmination of a ridiculous bit and therefore it makes no sense assume it would 1. be serious, 2. be given the same time, depth, and production that the rest of the campaign is given. and from the get go we were told this was going to be an especially silly series and that tone has been fairly stable. anyways like the other person said Get sent to the vulture dimension
Just admit you don't have whimsy in your heart and go to the vulture dimension 😂
