    This channel is one of faves, keep up the good work, Ryan (and Greg)!
    Which of these chairs is the most quiet? I always re-watch your review videos to try to listen for any creaking or grinding and it seemed like the Vera and Very did produce some noise. The Akir seemed pretty good! I dunno, I've had bad luck with most of the chairs I've purchased over time (Aeron, Sayl, Think) where after a couple months they'll creak during leaning back or pop when weight is shifted and lube doesn't fix it much. I should fit an average chair user's build lol (5'6" -180 lb)

      @btodtv  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you! That is tough, because every chair is susceptible to making some level of noises at some point. I would say of this group, the most likely to make some sound is the Vera chair. The most quiet is probably the Lino -GK

    I know these are chairs that weren't covered in this video, but I'd really like your opinion on the Ergohuman Elite V2 and the Ergohuman IOO High Back. I'm trying to toss up between these two chairs and I'm not sure which one to go for. I've tried searching your channel but you don't really have many videos concentrating on either of these chairs. A detailed comparison video would be great but short of that, which of these two is the better option? In Australia they are both roughly the same price so that's not a factor. They also have a gaming chair they call the Genidia which doesn't look like it uses the traditional "racing" design at all, so I'd be interested in your opinion on that, too.

      That is a tough one to diagnose over the internet. Tailbone pain can be caused by a list of different reasons and the solution will very greatly because of that. Some will like a softer seat, but it can be diminishing in returns the softer/deeper it gets. Which can end up being even worse the thicker and softer the pad -GK

    Are there any solid options for a chair that would be even somewhat ergonomic for upright working but have the features of a gaming chair to really lounge and have my legs on the desk when watching movies etc? Seems like all the office chairs have a really limited tilt mechanism but I'm not too fond of the gaming chairs either due to the racing seat design, lack of ergonomics and seemingly low quality. With the ergonomic office chair I have at home now I end up slouching when watching movies and the chair ends up doing more harm than good and my neck is killing me while it doesn't have a headrest. So far the Secretlab Titan 2022 seems to be the closest contender I've found even though it's a gaming char with all of their flaws but haven't found a better option for an all-rounder yet

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug Před 2 lety +2

      Hey! Office chairs aren’t really designed to pull double duty as recliners (like a Lay-Z-Boy), but I do feel it would be a smart product segment to specifically target, especially since the WFH/Hybrid work revolution. Part of that is because you ideally don’t want a pronounced lumbar support when you’re lying back, but you do want a lumbar hump when sitting upright. So, they’re like two different seat backs, in addition to a deeper recline angle.
      The Secret Labs chair was reviewed by BTOD. I don’t have much faith in their adjustable lumbar system… It looks like it will be ergonomically better when reclined (too far back to use a keyboard, will have to angle your chin towards your chest to see a screen not mounted above you) than the ergonomics when sitting upright for typing or tasking, but it will still be more firm than a true recliner chair.
      The Steelcase Series 2, shown in this video, has what I feel is an ideal headrest option. It’s there when you recline and lay back, but not engaged or in the way when sitting upright, so it seems similar to a highback chair, like the gaming chair. Hayworth Fern offers a similar looking headrest. I think office chairs offer good recline features, as long as you don’t intend to sleep in them. I’ve given up on sleeping in an office chair… and just ordered a remanufactured Steelcase Amira from BTOD’s reviews! It doesn’t have a headrest (though I might consider an aftermarket one some day), but that’s ok because so far I haven’t found gaming chair headrests to be comfortable or napping to be possible in gaming chairs. It’s supposed to ship tomorrow!
      I have a AKRacer chair, because I had hoped to become a streamer, but I can tell you I regret the purchase. It was reviewed as a superior option over DXracer, also has cold-cure memory foam (thicker than DXRacer), has a high back and pillows for neck and lumbar. The pillows are firm and a kind of hokey way to get support… they don’t take weight off of your body, they just force you to bend and arch around them. They’re very pronounced and I don’t like using either of them. I broke my arm in a new year’s day arm wrestling match to start 2020, and the doc said I had to sleep in a chair instead of horizontal in bed. Well, the gaming chair was awful. The seat didn’t bottom out, but it felt very hard and made my tailbone and hips hurt, the PU leather was hard and sweat-inducing, and finding somewhere comfortable to rest my feet sucked. A desk is too high for a footrest, it concentrates all your weight on your butt and you will feel it. I also feel like I outgrew the looks of the chair, and I don’t want it in the background of my CZcams videos… people make fun gaming chairs.
      Believe me, you’re much better off with an office chair at the computer, and a recliner chair for TV/reclining/napping. I think a hammock-style footrest would give you the most adjustability in a footrest, plus they’re cheap!

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug Před 2 lety +1

      1 month usage update:
      •Why is it so heavy?
      •No cushions or extra foam needed.
      •It’s not a “rocking chair,” but I love the seat back tension adjustment: perfection!
      •Understated.
      That last point is one I would like to drive home. After 5 years with a “gaming chair” and a few years coming back to obsessively researching my next chair, it’s almost a shame when the Amia arrived that the anticipation is over. Because… it seems like the Amia is carefully designed not to call attention to itself. Modest but clean looks, plenty of adjustments but most of them are “set & forget it,” no ergonomic hotspots that call attention to themselves. These are all good things, but I quickly got used to the chair and stopped thinking about it while I use it. What to do with my obsession now? Lol.
      A footrest would definitely be a more comfortable and appropriate solution than a “napping” office chair.

    I think you very accurately show how a chair feels in the real world to somebody that has some chair experience. I have a year old leap v2 with all the options. I had sat in the top Herman Miller chairs before going with the leap. The leap felt great initially. I have back issues and thought I needed lot's of lumbar. I feel I overrated lumbar & adjustability of same. The design of the seat back either works or it doesn't....imo. My issue however is with the waterfall seat. I just cannot get comfortable. The forward tilt design of the seat aggravates my back and thighs every time I try it. I keep thinking it will feel better one of these days and it doesn't. I try sitting higher & lower - no luck. So, it just sits in a corner. When I now sit in cheap flat bottom chairs I feel great. Does that make any sense to you? With what I said in mind, the chair you reviewed with the extra cushy bottom would seem to be a good fit. Appears to not have a waterfall design like the leap. I respect your opinion. I don't think you are a BS guy trying to sell product. You keep it real. Please guide me. Thanks, Chuck

    I've actually sent back a gesture a few days ago and bought an ergonomic gaming chair from a small I house family manufacturer in Germany (Noone here will know it).
    While I usually agree that 99,9% of gaming chairs are trash (I've had one of those before), this one also has some flaws, but is WAY better than you'd initially think.
    Synchronous Mechanism, seat depth adjustment, back hight adjustment, seat tilt adjustment...
    I've tested it, and now I gotta wait a few weeks before it's gonna arrive. I really am looking forward to it, after being a bit sad about the gesture.

    It seems to be rare for an inexpensive mesh bottom chair to make any of your best lists, I’d love if y’all would consider a “best mesh bottom” category/video

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug Před 2 lety

      Cheap mesh bottoms are often cited as problem areas in BTOD chairs, actually. They usually point out poor durability, sag that squeezes the butt and makes a hotspot on your tailbone, the hard edges of the frame making varied seat positions uncomfortable, and also the front lip usually has a memory foam pad which creates a crease and a hard “lip” that is uncomfortable against the upper thighs. Check out their review of the Staples Hyken, I think they did a stand-alone video and it’s also in a few of their “tier rating” comparison videos.
      The remastered Herman Miller Aeron is supposed to address some of these issues, but still has firm plastic hip bolsters. Steelcase is supposed to release a new all-mesh chair this year called the Karman, which the marketing says has addressed all the issues I mentioned. It’ll be worth waiting for reviews and saving up for, though it might be priced in the $700-$900 range (I’m not sure).

      Great suggestion. Interstuhl is not well known in the United States. I only became aware of them when I went to Neocon 2019 as a layman. They make some very interesting chairs. I’m particularly interested in the Vintage and AirPad.
      It’s sort of crazy to think about, but there are a decent amount of Scandinavian and Continental European chair brands that really have some incredible chairs where Americans aren’t even aware of their existence. American companies seem to be focusing on material innovation to make chairs lighter which is neat. However, to my dismay, they seem to also be focusing on making “self-adjusting” chairs (i.e. chairs that use springs and your weight to try to hold you loosely into place) rather than making controls easier to reach. Hopefully these European companies can make inroads in additional markets abroad.

    @bluegrass571 Před 2 lety +2

    I'm really enjoying this channel. One thing I was hoping you could shed a little light on is usage of tilt locking vs. tilt-limiting mechanisms. I think this adjustment is among the most important of any on an office chair. I vastly prefer tilt limiting mechanisms to tilt-locking mechanisms. Also, while I'm not sure of this, I doubt that a tilt-limiting mechanism is significantly more expensive to have than a tilt-locking mechanism (in fact, I think tilt-locking mechanisms are likely more expensive, especially if it features an infinitely adjustable lock).
    The nice thing with tilt limiters is that when you need to sit up briefly to type something, you can do so without completely unlocking the chair (which is often somewhat difficult to do).
    However, we see that tilt limiters seem limited to only a couple of firms (Herman Miller and Steelcase). Why is this? My suspicion is that there is some sort of patent involved. Presumably Steelcase and Herman Miller have their own in-house tilt mechanisms, and so they can produce a tilt-limiter. That having been said, at Neocon, I saw companies that just sold a chair adjustment mechanism. From what I saw, none of them offered tilt limiters. Who holds the patent preventing generic chair mechanism manufacturers from building tilt-mechanisms into their chairs, which are much more quickly adjustable (see the Mirra, for example)? I understand that you do sell office chairs as well, but if you were able to look into this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

    • @btodtv
      @btodtv  Před 2 lety +2

      We really only see the tilt limiting functions on the higher end models. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure if it is more or less expensive. But we are looking into it and should know more soon. I agree though, I prefer the movement that it promotes vs. locking into one position. Thanks for watching our videos!

      @@btodtv Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your willing to look into this. It seems like very staid, modular office chair companies that promise to fit people even outside the 5th to the 95th percentile would at least have it as an option if it were at all possible, so I'm curious.
      No, I'm not going to Neocon this year. The pandemic has sort of put a damper on my travel plans in general. I also definitely enjoyed it, but it's a bit out of the way for an enthusiast. Part of it was just to see Chicago. I hope to go back one day, but I kind of am looking at checking out a conference that's more focused on office chairs in particular (as opposed to office interiors more generally). Otherwise, I had been planning on visiting some chair showrooms in the US and in the UK, but you do have to be a little careful with that. If a company has a showroom, they're nice, but if it's a dealer sometimes they get upset (probably understandably) if they feel like you're just kicking the tires. It's a fun way to travel, I like to travel anyway and I can check off some hobbyist stuff while I'm there.

      @@btodtv Lol I owned an Ikea jarvfjallet (the successor to the markus) for almost a year before returning it for a more expensive, but way better ergonomic chair. Imo, the worst things about the jarvfjallet are the armrests, lumbar support and headrest. I have to give it to the 10-year warranty tho, which is pretty impressive for a chair that's around $200.

      I’ve been trying to buy a chair for like 6 months and new reviews keep coming out so now I’m even more confused!

    I love most of your videos and actually purchased a re-manufactured Leap from your website.
    But this video feels like to promote some under-presented chairs you are selling with actually BAD values. I may be misreading your definition but the re-manufactured Steelcase LeapV2, Amia and even the (overrated) HM Aeron (from BTOD!) are all technically UNDER $800 and will blow these lower end chairs in this video out of the water.

      Thank you for your support!
      This video is all about what we've tested that is best under $800, and is brand new. We wanted to include a nice mix of different types of chairs for different types of people.
      I don't think the Eurotech Vera or BTOD Akir are a bad value. Both are considered mid range chairs. The Vera is extremely comfortable and Eurotech has a solid warranty. The Akir is a larger chair, has a 325 lbs weight capacity, a ton of adjustments, free returns and a super thick seat pad.
      While I agree, the refurbished products present a really good value, many people want the brand new option vs used. It would probably be best to create a video with the best refurbished chairs under a certain dollar mark vs. mixing them in with new products.
