    The Alcatraz swim, a two-mile adventure from just outside of Alcatraz Island to the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, is a world-famous event, held several times a year by Odyssey Open Water Swimming. The event is not a race -- it is a challenging swim and an experience you will remember and cherish for the rest of your life.
    Swimmers are accompanied by boats and a large support staff team, including coaches and EMTs. Kayakers will paddle alongside swimmers and can help a swimmer exit the water during the swim if needed.
    Have you experienced an Odyssey Alcatraz swim? Whether you have and you loved it or are training to complete one in the near future, we welcome you to join an upcoming swim with us: www.odysseyopenwater.com/alcat...

    Fantastic,sharks?

      There's never been a shark attack during any of the swims in the Bay. Technically there are sharks in the area, but most are little harmless ones like Leopard Sharks and Brown Smoothhounds, which have no interest in people!

    What is the average time to make the swim?

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The swim can last between 30 minutes and an hour-and-a-half depending on your level of comfort, ability, and the conditions. We don't have a calculated average from all swimmers on completion times. It would get challenging with factoring in repositioning and getting the times of 80-100 swimmers.

    Interesting. So how come you start so far away from the actual island?

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 2 lety +3

      Alcatraz Island is a US National Park. We get as close as we can safely and within restrictions.

    Great video. I would love to make this swim some day. Hoping to make it back to San Francisco and Berkeley sometime soon and would love to try a short open water swim.

    Nice video. What is the distance please ?

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 3 lety +4

      Thanks! It's usually just under 2 miles, though the boost from the current often makes it seem a little shorter.

    So basically the men that supposedly got out the jail ,could of made the swim ?? As an X competitive swimmer just wondering .
    Plus good on you ,looked a nice swim

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes! Despite all the talk about it being impossible, we've escorted hundreds of swimmers across, many of who are not particularly competitive. Of course the escapees would have had to time it right with the currents, and they wouldn't have the benefit of wetsuits like many of our swimmers!

    how long is the swim?

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 3 lety +1

      It's usually just under 2 miles, though the boost from the current often makes it seem a little shorter. Swimmers usually take between 30 minutes and 1:30.

  • @Eric_the_miserable_midget

    Seems easy

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 2 lety +2

      Come do it and find out! Most experienced swimmers who do it actually do say that it was easier than they expected.

    If mankind were meant to wear wetsuits we would have evolved into seals. No wetsuits ;-)

    • @stehbar
      @stehbar Před 4 lety +10

      I miss the logic. We wear wetsuits EXACTLY because we have not evolved into seals, which in fact notoroiusly do not wear any.

    • @ODYSSEYOpenWater
      @ODYSSEYOpenWater  Před 3 lety +2

      We support either choice. It does, however, get extremely cold near Alcatraz Island.

      At this point, I would LOVE to evolve into a Seal. #selkie

    • @stefangoeritzer
      @stefangoeritzer Před 3 lety +1

      Correct, it's not real open water swimming using wetsuits. Coping with the conditions is an essential part of it.
