Last time I preached this, I titled it 'The Tale of Two Kingdoms', comparing the Kingdom of Herod (and that of Glory), to the Kingdom of the Cross. The tragedy of this is not just that John lost his head, but that Herod failed to believe his message, and opted instead for the kingdom of glory. Meanwhile, we still, even after a story of tragedy, respond, "this is the Gospel of the Lord", because the Kingdom of the Cross is nevertheless still on the move!
