    Mooneys trigger memories that bring me back to Gordon Baxter's writings as 'The Pasture Pilot' from Beaumont TX in the 70s 80s & 90s for FLYING Magazine in his column 'Bax Seat'. The previous on air radio personality story teller brought the romance of flying into my mind & heart back when I bought a 10 hour block of flying time as a student pilot.Your descriptions of the M20 even sound like him talking. May you have many joyful memories with your young family in this marvelous machine designed & crafted by AL Mooney. Remember as you get your instrument endorsement, the day after a weather induced accident is always clear & sunny when they inspect the aircraft remnants. Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

      @@MyTimeToFly Yes it is and I completely understand! I meant that as a positive aspect about it, I just had a few "had-to-haves" that kept me from jumping on this one. I don't have a PPL (just wish I did) but from what I have learned from postings, an older Mooney would suit me fine. I have always been fascinated by airplanes, particularly propeller driven. I have been to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. two or three times, and I always get stuck drooling over those beautiful machines, especially a twin engine silver and yellow model hanging near the main entrance. Thanks for your overview.

      @@MyTimeToFly Thanks. I once attended a conference in Martha's Vineyard. The flight from Logan/Boston was on a WW II vintage DC7, a twin prop, tail steering beautiful aircraft. We boarded near the tail, and had to walk up (about 35°) towards the front of the plane to take our seats. Some of the younger people were groaning and complaining, but I loved it. For the return to Logan with the same airline (Provincetown Airways, now defunct) we flew in a six-seater, and I got to sit right behind the copilot's seat. At another time, after a college holiday weekend in Foxboro, Massachusetts, my college friend's father took us back to Maine on a four seater that I think was a Beechcraft, though I don't remember the model. Those have been some of the most positive highlights of my life.

    In sept 19 you were talking about how to get the license and in March of 2020 you have a Mooney. Congrats! Nice overview of the M20c. Would you mind sharing what your purchase price was? Or at least a range? I'm midway thru flight training and starting to think about options for long term. How many hours in transition training was required to get the complex rating?

    • @MyTimeToFly
      @MyTimeToFly  Před 3 lety +3

      No problem man, we spent around $35k on the plane, which included some initial upgrades. I had about 150 hours at that time, all in fixed gear, fixed pitch airplanes. The insurance required 10 hours of transition training, and it took most of that for me to gain my confidence! Most of that confidence was the change in landing sight picture, and less about the complex nature.

    First off, love the channel, I want to buy a M20c myself. I was speaking with a pilot I happened to meet about possible aircraft choices. I mentioned my interest in the Mooney. He suggested I steer away from the Mooney. He said the constant speed prop could go out and that is a $40,000.00 fix. He also said due to the wing chord, the tips stall before the wing root. I was quite disappointed. He suggested a Piper pa28 Cherokee-180. I don't have an issue w/ Pipers, I just really like the M20c. What is your opinion? Very best regards, JA

    • @MyTimeToFly
      @MyTimeToFly  Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks so much Jack!!! I have to say I disagree. The cost of the prop seems a bit high, it seems to have an extra 0 in it. Regardless, it isn’t unique to Mooney, it could happen with any constant speed prop. Regarding stalls, I have to say my planes stalls very smooth, nothing wild. I have nothing against the Cherokee, but clearly I love the Mooney, and don’t think you’d regret anything!
